This is a remix of the main theme of Alpha Mission, an early vertically-scrolling shooter from SNK, otherwise known in Japan as ASO: Armored Scrum Object. SYD is the spacecraft that the player controls. Due to the limited instrumentation of the original game's music, the remix takes many liberties and uses an orchestral approach; it begins with the jingle that plays when a player inserts a credit, and incorporates both "Theme of SYD" and "SYD Overdrive", the two songs that play in each area of the game.

Trivia

  • According to Masahiro Sakurai's Famitsu column, this song was recorded over 6 months prior to Terry's release. The English version was recorded first, followed by the Japanese version. It was carefully mixed by the arranger, Yuzo Koshiro, to resemble a song from the '80s, contemporary to the original game's release. In total, over 80 individual tracks went into the final mix of the song.[2]

Origin

This is the aforementioned remix of the first level/credits theme from Psycho Soldier, only with English lyrics, for the first time since the original game's release. Since the English version has fewer verses than the Japanese version, the second verse is replaced with a saxophone solo, and the third verse is a reprisal of the first verse. Like the Japanese version, it is performed by Kanako Kotera.[1]

Other Uses

This track is used in the international version of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – Mr. Sakurai Presents "Terry Bogard"" when Sakurai discusses the cameos following Athena Asamiya's appearance on King of Fighters Stadium.

Lyrics
Athena’s name is magic

Mystery, it’s what you’ll see

Her crystal is the answer

Fighting fair to keep us free

She’s just a little girl with power inside, burning bright

You better hide if you are bad, she’ll get you

She’ll read your mind and find if you believe in right or wrong

Trivia

  • Though Ultimate boasts the first time the English lyrics have been heard in full since the release of Psycho Soldier, it was actually SNK 40th Anniversary Collection that was the first time since the original release that they were heard at all, as they were briefly featured in that game's remix of the Psycho Soldier theme.

It was also used in later games: the boss fight against Dragon Nosuke and first area of the Final Mission themes in Metal Slug 2, and the outer factory route in Mission 3 and the Hi-Do and fake General Morden boss fight in Metal Slug 3. The remix stays very close to the orchestration of the original song, only adding minor synthesized flourishes. In some parts of the song, the main theme of Metal Slug is also included.

Trivia

  • When selecting music for Terry's Challenger Pack, Masahiro Sakurai initially focused on songs related to Terry, but noted that a lot of them had a "big band" style, and wanted to branch out into other SNK franchises to add more variety. He sent a list of 50 song choices to SNK, expecting them to pick out 10 or 20, but SNK agreed to all of them, much to his surprise.[3] As a result, Fatal Fury has the most music of any third-party and DLC series, and the third highest amount of music after Mario and Fire Emblem.
  • Fatal Fury and Pac-Man share the distinction of including music from outside their series of origin.
  • At 17, the Fatal Fury franchise is tied with the Mega Man franchise with the most amount of new remixes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • The original versions of ART of FIGHT, Banquet of Nature, and Stormy Saxophone 2, as well as the opening theme from The King of Fighters '94, all appear in Terry's reveal trailer, but do not appear in-game.
