The '''music of ''Super Smash Bros. Melee''''' was performed by a group credited as ''Orchestra Melee''. The tracks as they are presented in the game's [[Sound Test]] are listed and described here.
The '''music''' in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' was composed and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, and Takuto Kitsuta. Among other sources, most of the orchestral music was sequenced using two sound libraries called Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Quantum Leap Brass, while other songs were sequenced using the Roland Sound Canvas.<ref>[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JJBlHHDc65fhZmKUGLrDTLCm6rfUU83-kbuD8Y0zU0o/edit#gid=854550438 NEWER VGM Sound Sources - Google Sheets]</ref> A select few tracks are also recorded with a live orchestra referred to as "Orchestra Melee", who later performed the ''[[Smashing...Live!]]'' soundtrack suite. The tracks as they are presented in the game's [[Sound Test]] are listed and described here. Almost all of the game's music can be heard in the game's Sound Test feature, and they are given their "official titles" there.

''Opening'' is an original piece of music for ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', and forms the basis for the game's main theme. Part of the track has been derived from the track ''{{SSBBMusicLink|Kirby|Butter Building}}'' from the ''Kirby'' game ''[[Kirby's Adventure]]''. Also, the opening notes of the main theme bear a resemblance to the credits music from the original ''Star Fox''. Many other music tracks in ''Melee'' are remixes of ''Opening''.

===Origin===
===Origin===
This track is a cover band re-performance of the somewhat infamous [[dkwiki:DK Rap|DK Rap]], originating from ''[[dkwiki:Donkey Kong 64|Donkey Kong 64]]'' with largely the same lyrics, but more advanced instruments and rhythms, as well as featuring a new vocalist, James W. Norwood Jr.
This track is a reprise of the {{s|mariowiki|DK Rap}} from ''{{s|mariowiki|Donkey Kong 64}}'' with a more varied backing track, as well as a new vocalist, James W. Norwood Jr..

===Trivia===
===Trivia===
*While the lyrics to this track are otherwise the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters the line "But this Kong's one ''hell'' of a guy" into "But this Kong's one ''heck'' of a guy", to avoid potential offense.
*While the lyrics to this track are mostly the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters three lines:
**The first line of the fourth verse (which refers to [[Diddy Kong]]) has "it's" added to it.
**The second line of the fifth verse (which refers to {{s|mariowiki|Chunky Kong}}) starts with "He's" instead of "It's".
**The line "But this Kong's one ''hell'' of a guy" (the last line of Chunky's verse) is changed to "But this Kong's one ''heck'' of a guy".
*As an additional change from the original, before looping back to Donkey Kong's verse, a spoken version of the intro can be heard.
*This is the first track with vocals in the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series, and the only one to appear in ''Melee''.

|He-he-here we go

So they're finally here, performing for you

If you know the words, you can join in too

Put your hands together, if you want to clap

As we take you through this monkey rap

Huh

DK

Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He's finally back to kick some tail

His coconut gun can fire in spurts

If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt

He's bigger, faster, and stronger too

He's the first member of the DK crew

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong is here

This Kong's got style, so listen up dudes

She can shrink in size, to suit her mood

She's quick and nimble when she needs to be

She can float through the air and climb up trees

If you choose her, you'll not choose wrong

With a skip and a hop, she's one cool Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

He has no style, he has no grace

Th-this Kong has a funny face

He can handstand when he needs to

And stretch his arms out, just for you

Inflate himself just like a balloon

This crazy Kong just digs this tune

DK DK

Donkey Kong

DK DK

Donkey Kong is here

He's back again and it's about time too

And this time he's in the mood

He can fly real high with his jetpack on

With his pistols out, he's one tough Kong

He'll make you smile when he plays his tune

But Kremlings beware 'cause he's after you

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Haha, Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

Finally, he's here for you

He's the last member of the DK crew

This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny

Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy

Can pick up a boulder with relative ease

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

He may move slow, he can't jump high

But this Kong's one heck of a guy

C'mon Cranky, take it to the fridge

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

*In [https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/flash/0118/kokaon.html an interview] on the original ''Super Smash Bros. Realizing that few would understand the reference, the arrangement was revised.

===Origin===
===Origin===
This track is an orchestrated and atmospheric remix of the popular [[List of SSBB Music (Kirby series)#Gourmet Race|Gourmet Race]] track from the ''Kirby'' games, starting with ''[[wikirby:Kirby Super Star|Kirby Super Star]]''. The Gourmet Race music track would play in ''Kirby Super Star'' when [[Kirby]] challenged [[King Dedede]] to a [[wikirby:Gourmet Race|Gourmet Race]], where the two would race to the finish line while trying to eat as many pieces of [[food]] as possible.
This track is a dramatic, orchestrated remix of the ''Gourmet Race'' music from ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby Super Star}}'', which is a recurring melody in the ''Kirby'' series. Arrangements based on this one would later go on to be used in several future ''Kirby'' games, like ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land}}'' (which also redesigned the Fountain of Dreams to resemble its appearance in ''Melee'') and ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby Air Ride}}''.

The first of these is named ''[[wikibound:Bein' Friends|Bein<nowiki>'</nowiki> Friends]]'', which is chronologically the second track that would play when [[wikibound:Ninten|Ninten]] explored the over world after he gains his first ally, Lloyd. The second track is a remix of the ''[[wikibound:Eight Melodies|Eight Melodies]]'' theme, the music piece that ''Mother'' revolved around, as the whole objective of the game was that Ninten needed to collect all eight pieces of this track. The third and final track is the standard ''Battle Theme'', which would play when Ninten and his friends fought any standard enemy that is not a boss.

===Origin===
Like [[Music (SSBM)#Fountain of Dreams|''Fountain of Dreams'']], this track is also a remix of the well-known {{SSBBMusicLink|Kirby|Gourmet Race}} theme. However, unlike ''Fountain of Dreams'', this remix is more faithful to the original piece, being very upbeat and chirpy. This track has been directly ported from [[Nintendo 64]] game ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'', where it would play on the [[Dream Land]] stage, where it in turn, also plays in ''Melee'', which features Dream Land as a returning stage.
Like ''Fountain of Dreams'', this track is also a remix of the ''Gourmet Race'' theme, though significantly more faithful to the original. This music is recorded from the [[Nintendo 64]] game ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'', where it likewise plays on the {{SSB|Dream Land}} stage.

==Saria's Theme==
===Origin===
===Origin===
This track is an ocarina/flute-based remix of the music that would play when [[Link]] ventured through the [[zeldawiki:Lost Woods|Lost Woods]] in ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time]]''. This same piece was also comprised into a melody Link could play on his ocarina, named ''Saria's Song'', as it was Link's friend [[zeldawiki:Saria|Saria]] that teaches Link how to play ''Saria's Song''. The melody can then be used to contact Saria from afar. As the piece has such a strong association with Saria, the music track was named accordingly. The version Link could play on his ocarina would typically only play very briefly, but certain points of the game can trigger the full piece to be played on Link's ocarina.
This track is an airy remix of ''{{s|zeldawiki|Saria's Song}}'', the theme of the {{s|zeldawiki|Lost Woods}} from ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time]]''.

===Usage===
Like the previous installment, each character (aside from those in a multi-character series, e.g. {{uv|Mario|Super Mario Bros.}}, {{uv|The Legend of Zelda}}, {{uv|Pokémon}}, or {{uv|Fire Emblem}}) gets a unique flourish for when they win a match. Characters in the above mentioned series share their victory theme with the other characters in said series. These themes are named by the Sound Test as '''[Character]'s Victory''' (i.e. '''Samus's Victory'''). However, there are a few quirks in this naming convention:
*Series with multiple characters are instead titled '''[Series] Team Victory''' (i.e. '''Fire Emblem Team Victory''')
**Despite there being four characters from the ''[[Mario (universe)|Super Mario Bros.]]'' series, their victory theme is nonetheless entitled '''Mario's Victory'''.
*Some victory themes have their series or character's name shortened:
**Donkey Kong is abbreviated as "DK."
**The ''The Legend of Zelda'' series is shortened to simply "Zelda."
**Captain Falcon is abbreviated to "Capt. Falcon."
*The ''Pokémon'' characters' victory theme is not titled in either conventional manner, instead being called '''Pokémon Victory''', similar to the previous game's "Pokémon Wins." This implies this song as a generic theme for any Pokémon, rather than being tied to the concept of a series.

Latest revision as of 19:32, September 6, 2024

The music in Super Smash Bros. Melee was composed and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, and Takuto Kitsuta. Among other sources, most of the orchestral music was sequenced using two sound libraries called Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Quantum Leap Brass, while other songs were sequenced using the Roland Sound Canvas.[1] A select few tracks are also recorded with a live orchestra referred to as "Orchestra Melee", who later performed the Smashing...Live! soundtrack suite. The tracks as they are presented in the game's Sound Test are listed and described here. Almost all of the game's music can be heard in the game's Sound Test feature, and they are given their "official titles" there.

Origin[edit]

This track is a reprise of the DK Rap from Donkey Kong 64 with a more varied backing track, as well as a new vocalist, James W. Norwood Jr..

Usage[edit]

This track plays on the Kongo Jungle stage. It also plays on Fourside during Event 25: Gargantuans. It also plays on Jungle Japes when fighting Team Donkey Kong in Classic Mode. It is one of Donkey Kong's Credits themes.

Composition & Arrangements[edit]

Vocals: James W. Norwood Jr.

Original Arranger: Hirokazu Ando

Original Composer: Grant Kirkhope

Japanese title: コンゴジャングル, Kongo Jungle

Trivia[edit]

  • While the lyrics to this track are mostly the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters three lines:
    • The first line of the fourth verse (which refers to Diddy Kong) has "it's" added to it.
    • The second line of the fifth verse (which refers to Chunky Kong) starts with "He's" instead of "It's".
    • The line "But this Kong's one hell of a guy" (the last line of Chunky's verse) is changed to "But this Kong's one heck of a guy".
  • As an additional change from the original, before looping back to Donkey Kong's verse, a spoken version of the intro can be heard.
  • This is the first track with vocals in the Super Smash Bros. series, and the only one to appear in Melee.
Lyrics
He-he-here we go

So they're finally here, performing for you

If you know the words, you can join in too

Put your hands together, if you want to clap

As we take you through this monkey rap

Huh

DK

Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He's finally back to kick some tail

His coconut gun can fire in spurts

If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt

He's bigger, faster, and stronger too

He's the first member of the DK crew

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong is here

This Kong's got style, so listen up dudes

She can shrink in size, to suit her mood

She's quick and nimble when she needs to be

She can float through the air and climb up trees

If you choose her, you'll not choose wrong

With a skip and a hop, she's one cool Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

He has no style, he has no grace

Th-this Kong has a funny face

He can handstand when he needs to

And stretch his arms out, just for you

Inflate himself just like a balloon

This crazy Kong just digs this tune

DK DK

Donkey Kong

DK DK

Donkey Kong is here

He's back again and it's about time too

And this time he's in the mood

He can fly real high with his jetpack on

With his pistols out, he's one tough Kong

He'll make you smile when he plays his tune

But Kremlings beware 'cause he's after you

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Haha, Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

Finally, he's here for you

He's the last member of the DK crew

This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny

Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy

Can pick up a boulder with relative ease

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

He may move slow, he can't jump high

But this Kong's one heck of a guy

C'mon Cranky, take it to the fridge

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Aww yeah

Victory themes[edit]

Main article: Victory theme

Usage[edit]

Like the previous installment, each character (aside from those in a multi-character series, e.g. Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, or Fire Emblem) gets a unique flourish for when they win a match. Characters in the above mentioned series share their victory theme with the other characters in said series. These themes are named by the Sound Test as [Character]'s Victory (i.e. Samus's Victory). However, there are a few quirks in this naming convention:

  • Series with multiple characters are instead titled [Series] Team Victory (i.e. Fire Emblem Team Victory)
    • Despite there being four characters from the Super Mario Bros. series, their victory theme is nonetheless entitled Mario's Victory.
  • Some victory themes have their series or character's name shortened:
    • Donkey Kong is abbreviated as "DK."
    • The The Legend of Zelda series is shortened to simply "Zelda."
    • Captain Falcon is abbreviated to "Capt. Falcon."
  • The Pokémon characters' victory theme is not titled in either conventional manner, instead being called Pokémon Victory, similar to the previous game's "Pokémon Wins." This implies this song as a generic theme for any Pokémon, rather than being tied to the concept of a series.
