The music in Super Smash Bros. Melee was composed and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, and Takuto Kitsuta. Among other sources, most of the orchestral music was sequenced using two sound libraries called Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Quantum Leap Brass, while other songs were sequenced using the Roland Sound Canvas. A select few tracks are also recorded with a live orchestra referred to as "Orchestra Melee", who later performed the Smashing...Live! soundtrack suite. Japanese title: オープニング, Opening
*0: Opening: The music heard during Melee's opening FMV, this is the official theme song of the game, orchestrated with slight bits of chorus.
clr
*1: Princess Peach's Castle: An orchestrated remix of the famous stage music from the original Super Mario Bros., with elements of the same game's "underground" stage theme overlapping with it. It is heard on the Mushroom Kingdom: Princess Peach's Castle stage in Vs. Mode, and also as the primary music of Mushroom Kingdom Adventure.
*2: Rainbow Cruise: A medley of two Mario series tracks. The first half of the track is the remixed first half of the Rainbow Ride tune heard in Super Mario 64 ( which is also known as the "Slider" theme from the same game), while the second half is a remix of the underwater stage tune heard in Super Mario Bros..
*3: Kongo Jungle: A cover band performance of the "DK Rap" made infamous in the opening sequence to Donkey Kong 64, with a much different assortment of instruments and rhythms from its original appearance. It is heard only in the DK Island: Kongo Jungle stage.
*4: Jungle Japes: A calm and atmospheric remix of the "DK Island Swing" in various stages of Donkey Kong Country for SNES. It is heard in DK Island: Jungle Japes.
*5: Great Bay: An orchestration of the "official" Legend of Zelda theme, heard throughout the Zelda series and introduced in the original The Legend of Zelda for NES. It is heard in Termina: Great Bay.

*7: Brinstar: A medley of three classic Metroid tunes, most of it consisting of a techno remix of the first "Brinstar" area music heard in the original Metroid for NES. It is followed by the short "game start" tune one hears whenever one resumes a game file in a Metroid game, and then the low-key general Metroid theme that was first heard on the original Metroid title screen. This is heard in Planet Zebes: Brinstar.
*8: Brinstar Depths: A "horror" remix of area music heard later on in the original Metroid, where Samus is particularly close to her encounter with Kraid. This is heard in Planet Zebes: Brinstar Depths.

*12: Green Greens: An orchestration of the Green Greens stage music from Kirby's Dream Land, heard in Dream Land: Green Greens.
*13: Corneria: An orchestration of, ironically, the music heard in the Venom stage, with pieces from Space Armada of the original Star Fox. It is heard on Lylat System: Corneria.
*14: Venom: Whereas this is an orchestration of "main music" heard in Star Fox 64 games, based on the music heard in the original Sector Z stage from SSB64. This is heard on Lylat System: Venom.
*15: Pokémon Stadium: An orchestration of the main title screen music in most Pokémon RPGs, complete with a chorus. It is heard in Kanto: Pokémon Stadium. Intrestingly, this version was taken in the Pokémon anime, in which there was no chorus.
*16: Poké Floats: A synthesized medley of three battle-related tunes heard in the first generation of Pokémon RPGs, beginning with the standard Trainer Battle theme, then the Gym Leader Battle theme, and finally the wild Pokemon encounter theme. This is heard on Kanto Skies: Poke Floats and is often heard accompanying Mewtwo in Single-player mode.

*21: Mushroom Kingdom: A perfect preservation of the original beep-boop normal stage music heard in the original Super Mario Bros. for NES, appearing in Mushroom: Kingdom as the primary song.
*22: Mushroom Kingdom (Finale): A perfect preservation of the original beep-boop "Hurry Up" version of the normal stage music heard in the original Super Mario Bros. for NES, appearing in Mushroom: Kingdom as the primary song when the match's timer is running low.
*23: Mushroom Kingdom II: A perfect preservation of the original beep-boop normal stage music heard in the original Super Mario Bros. 2, appearing in Mushroom: Kingdom II as the primary song.
*24: Mushroom Kingdom II (Finale): A perfect preservation of the original beep-boop "Boss" version of the boss battle music heard in the original Super Mario Bros. 2 for NES, appearing in Mushroom: Kingdom II as the primary song when the match's timer is running low.

Trivia
*While the lyrics to this track are mostly the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters three lines:
**The first line of the fourth verse (which refers to Diddy Kong) has "it's" added to it.
**The second line of the fifth verse (which refers to mariowiki) starts with "He's" instead of "It's".
**The line "But this Kong's one hell of a guy" (the last line of Chunky's verse) is changed to "But this Kong's one heck of a guy".
*As an additional change from the original, before looping back to Donkey Kong's verse, a spoken version of the intro can be heard.
*This is the first track with vocals in the Super Smash Bros. series, and the only one to appear in Melee.

|He-he-here we go

So they're finally here, performing for you

If you know the words, you can join in too

Put your hands together, if you want to clap

As we take you through this monkey rap

Huh

DK

Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He's finally back to kick some tail

His coconut gun can fire in spurts

If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt

He's bigger, faster, and stronger too

He's the first member of the DK crew

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong is here

This Kong's got style, so listen up dudes

She can shrink in size, to suit her mood

She's quick and nimble when she needs to be

She can float through the air and climb up trees

If you choose her, you'll not choose wrong

With a skip and a hop, she's one cool Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

He has no style, he has no grace

Th-this Kong has a funny face

He can handstand when he needs to

And stretch his arms out, just for you

Inflate himself just like a balloon

This crazy Kong just digs this tune

DK DK

Donkey Kong

DK DK

Donkey Kong is here

He's back again and it's about time too

And this time he's in the mood

He can fly real high with his jetpack on

With his pistols out, he's one tough Kong

He'll make you smile when he plays his tune

But Kremlings beware 'cause he's after you

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Haha, Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

Finally, he's here for you

He's the last member of the DK crew

This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny

Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy

Can pick up a boulder with relative ease

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

He may move slow, he can't jump high

But this Kong's one heck of a guy

C'mon Cranky, take it to the fridge

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Aww yeah

Victory themes
Victory theme
Usage
Like the previous installment, each character (aside from those in a multi-character series, e.g. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, or Fire Emblem) gets a unique flourish for when they win a match. Characters in the above mentioned series share their victory theme with the other characters in said series. These themes are named by the Sound Test as [Character]'s Victory (i.e. Samus's Victory). However, there are a few quirks in this naming convention:
*Series with multiple characters are instead titled [Series] Team Victory (i.e. Fire Emblem Team Victory)
**Despite there being four characters from the Super Mario Bros. series, their victory theme is nonetheless entitled Mario's Victory.
*Some victory themes have their series or character's name shortened:
**Donkey Kong is abbreviated as "DK."
**The The Legend of Zelda series is shortened to simply "Zelda."
**Captain Falcon is abbreviated to "Capt. Falcon."
*The Pokémon characters' victory theme is not titled in either conventional manner, instead being called Pokémon Victory, similar to the previous game's "Pokémon Wins." This implies this song as a generic theme for any Pokémon, rather than being tied to the concept of a series.

The Sound Test features 80 entries<!--00-79--> in its music list (if counting short pieces including victory themes), but this is not the full selection of music in the game. Latest revision as of 19:32, September 6, 2024

The music in Super Smash Bros. Melee was composed and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, and Takuto Kitsuta. Among other sources, most of the orchestral music was sequenced using two sound libraries called Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Quantum Leap Brass, while other songs were sequenced using the Roland Sound Canvas.[1] A select few tracks are also recorded with a live orchestra referred to as "Orchestra Melee", who later performed the Smashing...Live! soundtrack suite. The tracks as they are presented in the game's Sound Test are listed and described here. Almost all of the game's music can be heard in the game's Sound Test feature, and they are given their "official titles" there.

Trivia[edit]

  • While the lyrics to this track are mostly the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters three lines:
    • The first line of the fourth verse (which refers to Diddy Kong) has "it's" added to it.
    • The second line of the fifth verse (which refers to Chunky Kong) starts with "He's" instead of "It's".
    • The line "But this Kong's one hell of a guy" (the last line of Chunky's verse) is changed to "But this Kong's one heck of a guy".
  • As an additional change from the original, before looping back to Donkey Kong's verse, a spoken version of the intro can be heard.
  • This is the first track with vocals in the Super Smash Bros. series, and the only one to appear in Melee.
Lyrics
He-he-here we go

So they're finally here, performing for you

If you know the words, you can join in too

Put your hands together, if you want to clap

As we take you through this monkey rap

Huh

DK

Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He's finally back to kick some tail

His coconut gun can fire in spurts

If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt

He's bigger, faster, and stronger too

He's the first member of the DK crew

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong is here

This Kong's got style, so listen up dudes

She can shrink in size, to suit her mood

She's quick and nimble when she needs to be

She can float through the air and climb up trees

If you choose her, you'll not choose wrong

With a skip and a hop, she's one cool Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

He has no style, he has no grace

Th-this Kong has a funny face

He can handstand when he needs to

And stretch his arms out, just for you

Inflate himself just like a balloon

This crazy Kong just digs this tune

DK DK

Donkey Kong

DK DK

Donkey Kong is here

He's back again and it's about time too

And this time he's in the mood

He can fly real high with his jetpack on

With his pistols out, he's one tough Kong

He'll make you smile when he plays his tune

But Kremlings beware 'cause he's after you

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Haha, Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

Finally, he's here for you

He's the last member of the DK crew

This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny

Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy

Can pick up a boulder with relative ease

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

He may move slow, he can't jump high

But this Kong's one heck of a guy

C'mon Cranky, take it to the fridge

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Aww yeah

Victory themes[edit]

Main article: Victory theme

Usage[edit]

Like the previous installment, each character (aside from those in a multi-character series, e.g. Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, or Fire Emblem) gets a unique flourish for when they win a match. Characters in the above mentioned series share their victory theme with the other characters in said series. These themes are named by the Sound Test as [Character]'s Victory (i.e. Samus's Victory). However, there are a few quirks in this naming convention:

  • Series with multiple characters are instead titled [Series] Team Victory (i.e. Fire Emblem Team Victory)
    • Despite there being four characters from the Super Mario Bros. series, their victory theme is nonetheless entitled Mario's Victory.
  • Some victory themes have their series or character's name shortened:
    • Donkey Kong is abbreviated as "DK."
    • The The Legend of Zelda series is shortened to simply "Zelda."
    • Captain Falcon is abbreviated to "Capt. Falcon."
  • The Pokémon characters' victory theme is not titled in either conventional manner, instead being called Pokémon Victory, similar to the previous game's "Pokémon Wins." This implies this song as a generic theme for any Pokémon, rather than being tied to the concept of a series.

Alternate tracks can only be unlocked when the player has unlocked a certain number of characters (Tracks #30, #32, #34, #35, #36, and #37 are unlocked after all characters are unlocked, while tracks #31 and #33 are unlocked after Marth and Young Link are unlocked). Track #55 only plays when the Sound Test is unlocked.
