The '''music''' in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' was composed and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, and Takuto Kitsuta. Among other sources, most of the orchestral music was sequenced using two sound libraries called Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Quantum Leap Brass, while other songs were sequenced using the Roland Sound Canvas.<ref>[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JJBlHHDc65fhZmKUGLrDTLCm6rfUU83-kbuD8Y0zU0o/edit#gid=854550438 NEWER VGM Sound Sources - Google Sheets]</ref> A select few tracks are also recorded with a live orchestra referred to as "Orchestra Melee", who later performed the ''[[Smashing...Live!]]'' soundtrack suite. The tracks as they are presented in the game's [[Sound Test]] are listed and described here. Almost all of the game's music can be heard in the game's Sound Test feature, and they are given their "official titles" there.

''Opening'' is an original music track for ''Melee''.  Part of the track has been derived from the track ''{{SSBBMusicLink|Kirby|Butter Building}}'' from the {{uv|Kirby}} game ''[[Kirby's Adventure]]''. Also, the opening notes of the main theme bear a resemblance to the credits music from the original ''Star Fox''. Many other music tracks in ''Melee'' are remixes of ''Opening''.

===Trivia===
===Trivia===
*While the lyrics to this track are otherwise the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters the line "But this Kong's one ''hell'' of a guy" (the last line of the fifth verse, which refers to {{s|dkwiki|Chunky Kong}}) into "But this Kong's one ''heck'' of a guy", to avoid potential offense.
*While the lyrics to this track are mostly the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters three lines:
*In {{forwiiu}}, Lanky and Chunky Kong's sections of the song have been removed. Additionally, Tiny Kong's section is in fast motion.
**The first line of the fourth verse (which refers to [[Diddy Kong]]) has "it's" added to it.
**The second line of the fifth verse (which refers to {{s|mariowiki|Chunky Kong}}) starts with "He's" instead of "It's".
**The line "But this Kong's one ''hell'' of a guy" (the last line of Chunky's verse) is changed to "But this Kong's one ''heck'' of a guy".
*As an additional change from the original, before looping back to Donkey Kong's verse, a spoken version of the intro can be heard.
*This is the first track with vocals in the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series, and the only one to appear in ''Melee''.

|He-he-here we go

So they're finally here, performing for you

If you know the words, you can join in too

Put your hands together, if you want to clap

As we take you through this monkey rap

Huh

DK

Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He's finally back to kick some tail

His coconut gun can fire in spurts

If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt

He's bigger, faster, and stronger too

He's the first member of the DK crew

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong is here

This Kong's got style, so listen up dudes

She can shrink in size, to suit her mood

She's quick and nimble when she needs to be

She can float through the air and climb up trees

If you choose her, you'll not choose wrong

With a skip and a hop, she's one cool Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

He has no style, he has no grace

Th-this Kong has a funny face

He can handstand when he needs to

And stretch his arms out, just for you

Inflate himself just like a balloon

This crazy Kong just digs this tune

DK DK

Donkey Kong

DK DK

Donkey Kong is here

He's back again and it's about time too

And this time he's in the mood

He can fly real high with his jetpack on

With his pistols out, he's one tough Kong

He'll make you smile when he plays his tune

But Kremlings beware 'cause he's after you

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Haha, Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

Finally, he's here for you

He's the last member of the DK crew

This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny

Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy

Can pick up a boulder with relative ease

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

He may move slow, he can't jump high

But this Kong's one heck of a guy

C'mon Cranky, take it to the fridge

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Aww yeah

*In [https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/flash/0118/kokaon.html an interview] on the original ''Super Smash Bros. Melee'' website, Shogo Sakai stated that the arrangement was [https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/flash/0118/shrin_botsu.wav originally going to sound more eerie and ominous], a choice that was inspired by the tone of the ''Dungeon Theme'' from the first ''Legend of Zelda'' game and ''Yotsuya Kaidan'', a famous Japanese ghost story. Realizing that few would understand the reference, the arrangement was revised.

This track is an orchestrated and atmospheric remix of the popular ''[[List of SSBB Music (Kirby series)#Gourmet Race|Gourmet Race]]'' music from the ''Kirby'' games, starting with ''[[wikirby:Kirby Super Star|Kirby Super Star]]''. ''Gourmet Race'''s music track would play in ''Kirby Super Star'' when [[Kirby]] challenged [[King Dedede]] to a [[wikirby:Gourmet Race|Gourmet Race]], where the two would race to the finish line while trying to eat as many pieces of [[food]] as possible. The track was later used a year later in ''[[wikirby:Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land|Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land]]'' (a Game Boy Advance remake of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic ''[[wikirby:Kirby's Adventure|Kirby's Adventure]]''), during the penultimate boss fight against King Dedede at the Fountain of Dreams (note that the track is exclusive to the GBA version; the NES version simply uses the normal boss theme). The only difference is that the music is compressed so that it may be properly handled by the Game Boy Advance's inferior sound capabilities.
This track is a dramatic, orchestrated remix of the ''Gourmet Race'' music from ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby Super Star}}'', which is a recurring melody in the ''Kirby'' series. Arrangements based on this one would later go on to be used in several future ''Kirby'' games, like ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land}}'' (which also redesigned the Fountain of Dreams to resemble its appearance in ''Melee'') and ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby Air Ride}}''.

The majority of this track serves as a lightly orchestral remix of the music that would play when [[Kirby]] ventured through any [[Green Greens]]-themed level in ''[[wikirby:Kirby's Dream Land|Kirby's Dream Land]]''. However, the ending segment to this track is an excerpt of the music that would play when the ''Kirby Super Star'' sub-game [[wikirby:Milky Way Wishes|''Milky Way Wishes'']] was drawing to a close.
The track is an orchestral remix of the ''Green Greens'' theme from ''{{s|wikirby|Kirby's Dream Land}}'', as well as the ending theme, ''Kirby's Triumphant Return'', from ''Kirby Super Star''.

This track is somewhat of a medley of music tracks from the original ''EarthBound Beginnings'' game for the [[nwiki:NES|NES]]. The first of these is named ''[[wikibound:Bein' Friends|Bein<nowiki>'</nowiki> Friends]]'', which is chronologically the second track that would play when [[wikibound:Ninten|Ninten]] explored the overworld after he gains his first ally, Lloyd, as well as when he escorts Pippi home from the Podunk Cemetery. The second track is a remix of the ''[[wikibound:Eight Melodies|Eight Melodies]]'' theme, the music piece that ''EarthBound Beginnings'' revolved around, as the whole objective of the game was that Ninten needed to collect all eight pieces of this track. The piece then transitions into the theme heard on the title screen, ''[[wikibound:Mother 1+2 (soundtrack)|Mother Earth]]'', before quickly playing the final track, which is the standard ''Enemy Encounter Theme'', which would play when Ninten and his friends encountered any standard enemy that is not a boss.

The main track is ''{{s|wikibound|Bein' Friends}}'', the theme that plays when {{s|wikibound|Ninten}} has one partner accompanying him. Like ''[[Music (SSBM)#Jungle Japes|Jungle Japes]]'', this track is a remix of the popular ''DK Island Swing'' theme from ''Donkey Kong Country'', also known as ''Jungle Level'', which played on many jungle levels of the game. This music has been directly ported from the [[Nintendo 64]] game ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'', where it would play on the [[Congo Jungle]] stage, where it in turn, also plays in ''Melee'', which features Kongo Jungle as a returning stage.

This track is an ocarina/flute-based remix of the music that would play when [[Link]] ventured through the [[zeldawiki:Lost Woods|Lost Woods]] in ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time]]''. This same piece was also composed into a melody Link could play on his ocarina, named ''Saria's Song'', as it was Link's friend [[zeldawiki:Saria|Saria]] that teaches Link how to play ''Saria's Song''. The melody can then be used to contact Saria from afar. The version Link could play on his ocarina would typically only play very briefly, but certain points of the game can trigger the full piece to be played on Link's ocarina.

===Origin===
===Origin===
This track is a quaint, soft rock remix of [[wikibound:Pollyanna|''Pollyanna (I Believe in You)'']], from the 1989 game ''EarthBound Beginnings''. The music piece first played on any overworld area while [[wikibound:Ninten|Ninten]] was outside and on his own. As soon as Ninten gains an ally to walk with, the music will change to ''[[wikibound:Bein' Friends|Bein' Friends]]''. The track also played in [[Ness]]'s house in the 1995 SNES game ''[[wikibound:EarthBound|EarthBound]]'' (following Buzz Buzz's death), known as ''MOTHER 2'' in Japan, hence the name. The music later made one last appearance in the Japan-only 2006 Game Boy Advance game ''[[wikibound:Mother 3|MOTHER 3]]'', where it played in [[Porky]]'s "Hall of Memories" (a small hallway containing numerous memorabilia from the events of ''EarthBound''). There, it was remixed and renamed ''[[wikibound:A Certain Someone's Memories|A Certain Someone's Memories]]''.
This track is a soft rock remix of [[wikibound:Pollyanna|''Pollyanna (I Believe in You)'']] from ''EarthBound Beginnings'', where it plays as the overworld theme when no one is accompanying Ninten. The music reappears in ''EarthBound'' and ''Mother 3''. The layout is mainly based on the vocal version by Catherine Warwick from the CD.

This particular remix of ''Pollyanna'' appears to be based on the cover of it in [[wikibound:Mother (soundtrack)|the vocalized soundtrack]], as seen {{YouTube|7xvVkfAuNN8|here}}.

In ''[[supermariowiki:Dr. Mario (game)|Dr. Mario]]'' for the NES and following games, the player had a choice of two music tracks that could play during gameplay. One of these was ''[[List of SSBB Music (Nintendo series)#Chill (Dr. Mario)|Chill]]'', while the other was ''Fever''. This track is a remix of the ''Fever'' theme (Particularly the ''Game Boy'' version, as in that version, there is one more short verse before the song loops that is not present in the NES version).
In the ''{{iw|mariowiki|Dr. Mario|series}}'' series, the player can select which track to play during the game. This track is a remix of the default music, ''Fever''. It is specifically based on the version heard in the Game Boy and SNES ports, which has an extra bridge segment at the end that is missing from the original NES theme.

===Usage===
Like the previous installment, each character (aside from those in a multi-character series, e.g. {{uv|Mario|Super Mario Bros.}}, {{uv|The Legend of Zelda}}, {{uv|Pokémon}}, or {{uv|Fire Emblem}}) gets a unique flourish for when they win a match. Characters in the above mentioned series share their victory theme with the other characters in said series. These themes are named by the Sound Test as '''[Character]'s Victory''' (i.e. '''Samus's Victory'''). However, there are a few quirks in this naming convention:
*Series with multiple characters are instead titled '''[Series] Team Victory''' (i.e. '''Fire Emblem Team Victory''')
**Despite there being four characters from the ''[[Mario (universe)|Super Mario Bros.]]'' series, their victory theme is nonetheless entitled '''Mario's Victory'''.
*Some victory themes have their series or character's name shortened:
**Donkey Kong is abbreviated as "DK."
**The ''The Legend of Zelda'' series is shortened to simply "Zelda."
**Captain Falcon is abbreviated to "Capt. Falcon."
*The ''Pokémon'' characters' victory theme is not titled in either conventional manner, instead being called '''Pokémon Victory''', similar to the previous game's "Pokémon Wins." This implies this song as a generic theme for any Pokémon, rather than being tied to the concept of a series.

Latest revision as of 19:32, September 6, 2024

The music in Super Smash Bros. Melee was composed and arranged by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, and Takuto Kitsuta. Among other sources, most of the orchestral music was sequenced using two sound libraries called Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Quantum Leap Brass, while other songs were sequenced using the Roland Sound Canvas.[1] A select few tracks are also recorded with a live orchestra referred to as "Orchestra Melee", who later performed the Smashing...Live! soundtrack suite. The tracks as they are presented in the game's Sound Test are listed and described here. Almost all of the game's music can be heard in the game's Sound Test feature, and they are given their "official titles" there.

Trivia[edit]

  • While the lyrics to this track are mostly the same as its original version, this re-performance of the DK Rap alters three lines:
    • The first line of the fourth verse (which refers to Diddy Kong) has "it's" added to it.
    • The second line of the fifth verse (which refers to Chunky Kong) starts with "He's" instead of "It's".
    • The line "But this Kong's one hell of a guy" (the last line of Chunky's verse) is changed to "But this Kong's one heck of a guy".
  • As an additional change from the original, before looping back to Donkey Kong's verse, a spoken version of the intro can be heard.
  • This is the first track with vocals in the Super Smash Bros. series, and the only one to appear in Melee.
Lyrics
He-he-here we go

So they're finally here, performing for you

If you know the words, you can join in too

Put your hands together, if you want to clap

As we take you through this monkey rap

Huh

DK

Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well

He's finally back to kick some tail

His coconut gun can fire in spurts

If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt

He's bigger, faster, and stronger too

He's the first member of the DK crew

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong is here

This Kong's got style, so listen up dudes

She can shrink in size, to suit her mood

She's quick and nimble when she needs to be

She can float through the air and climb up trees

If you choose her, you'll not choose wrong

With a skip and a hop, she's one cool Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

He has no style, he has no grace

Th-this Kong has a funny face

He can handstand when he needs to

And stretch his arms out, just for you

Inflate himself just like a balloon

This crazy Kong just digs this tune

DK DK

Donkey Kong

DK DK

Donkey Kong is here

He's back again and it's about time too

And this time he's in the mood

He can fly real high with his jetpack on

With his pistols out, he's one tough Kong

He'll make you smile when he plays his tune

But Kremlings beware 'cause he's after you

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Haha, Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

DK

Donkey Kong

Finally, he's here for you

He's the last member of the DK crew

This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny

Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy

Can pick up a boulder with relative ease

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

He may move slow, he can't jump high

But this Kong's one heck of a guy

C'mon Cranky, take it to the fridge

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Walnuts, peanuts, pineapple smells

Grapes, melons, oranges and coconut shells

Aww yeah

Victory themes[edit]

Main article: Victory theme

Usage[edit]

Like the previous installment, each character (aside from those in a multi-character series, e.g. Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, or Fire Emblem) gets a unique flourish for when they win a match. Characters in the above mentioned series share their victory theme with the other characters in said series. These themes are named by the Sound Test as [Character]'s Victory (i.e. Samus's Victory). However, there are a few quirks in this naming convention:

  • Series with multiple characters are instead titled [Series] Team Victory (i.e. Fire Emblem Team Victory)
    • Despite there being four characters from the Super Mario Bros. series, their victory theme is nonetheless entitled Mario's Victory.
  • Some victory themes have their series or character's name shortened:
    • Donkey Kong is abbreviated as "DK."
    • The The Legend of Zelda series is shortened to simply "Zelda."
    • Captain Falcon is abbreviated to "Capt. Falcon."
  • The Pokémon characters' victory theme is not titled in either conventional manner, instead being called Pokémon Victory, similar to the previous game's "Pokémon Wins." This implies this song as a generic theme for any Pokémon, rather than being tied to the concept of a series.
