The Super Mushroom (スーパーキノコ, Super Mushroom) is an object from the Mario series, debuting as an item in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Origin
The Super Mushroom is an important aspect of the entire Mario series. Starting in Super Mario Bros., where it was originally called the Magic Mushroom, it made the user larger, allowing him to withstand hits from enemies and break Brick Blocks by jumping into them. Since then, it has appeared in nearly every Mario sidescroller, as well as Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World, with the same effect, with the exception of Super Mario Bros. 2, where it simply increased the player's health. It has appeared so much in the Mario series that it is now considered an icon of it, and as a result it serves as its series symbol in the Smash games.
Effect
The Super Mushroom appears on the stage and keeps sliding to the right. In Melee, it will slide left if it spawns on the right half of the stage. A character touching it will grow larger, with the following effects:
- Makes the character, and their hitboxes and hurtboxes, bigger.
- Increases the fighter's weight by a small amount (applies a 1.6× multiplier in Melee).
- Reduces the fighter's knockback taken multiplier.
- The item does not offer any knockback resistance bonuses, however, so the fighter will still flinch from attacks that deal any amount of knockback.
- Direct attacks deal more damage (multiplied by 1.56× from Brawl onwards, less in Melee) and subsequently more knockback.
- Projectiles still deal their base damage amount, though they do retain their increased sizes during the item's effect.
- The base knockback and knockback growth values are not affected.
- Thrown items go farther and deal more damage.
- Increases jump height proportionally.
- Increases falling speed and gravity. Certain up specials, such as Hero's Spin, will grant less vertical height as a result.
- Increases air speed significantly (seemingly by a larger factor than fall speed).
- Increases running speed proportionally.
- Longer landing lag when using aerial attacks.
- Increases size of ledge sweetspot.
- Shortens recovery in Melee.
- The character's sound effects and voice become lower-pitched and slowed down. This does not affect gameplay.
The transformation lasts about ten seconds. Touching a Super Mushroom while under the effect of a Poison Mushroom and vice versa will restore a character to their normal size.
In Super Smash Bros.
The Super Mushroom does not appear in the game. Giant Donkey Kong, who has the effect of the Super Mushroom, is an opponent in the 6th stage of the 1P Game mode. The Super Mushroom also cameos as the Universe symbol of the Mario universe.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
The Super Mushroom made its debut in the Super Smash Bros. series in Melee, with the effects described above. Additionally, in the Special mode Giant Melee, all the players are permanently under the effect of a Super Mushroom. Giant battles can also occur in Classic Mode.
Trophy information
- Super Mushroom
Super Mario Bros. veterans will recognize these power-ups, which hid inside brick blocks and helped Mario and Luigi withstand enemy attacks. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, they temporarily turn your character into a giant. Not only will your size and strength increase, but so will your mass, making it harder for foes to knock you off.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
In Super Smash Bros Brawl, characters strike a pose while growing/shrinking, briefly relishing their increased size and lamenting their return to normal size. Most of the items held by the player, as well as their own projectiles, will be proportionate to their bigger size. Certain attacks or charge ups can be interrupted if a Super Mushroom touches the player in the course of doing an action.
Acquiring a Super Mushroom causes a fighter's direct attacks to deal 1.56× their normal damage, except for Wario, Wario-Man, Samus, Fox, Falco, Wolf, Captain Falcon, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Lucario, and Snake, where their direct attacks will deal 1.8× their normal damage.
Giant battles also return as a Special Brawl feature and in Classic Mode. In a Giant Special Brawl, fighters are heavier, and take less knockback than normal. Their direct attacks also deal 1.64× their normal damage, but the multiplier increases to around 2.648× (3.08× for the previously mentioned characters) upon acquiring a Super Mushroom.
Trophy information
- Super Mushroom
- A mushroom that makes you giant sized. When you're this big, your attack power increases and you're harder to launch. But you become an easy target and may come under serious fire. Unlike other items, it doesn't remain in one place but moves to the right once it appears. Why to the right? Well, because that's what it did in its original appearance in Super Mario Bros.

In Super Smash Bros. 4
The Super Mushroom returns in Super Smash Bros. 4, keeping its prior behavior. Giant battles are once again available as a Special Smash option and during Classic Mode. There is now a glitch that occurs in training mode where the item may fail to increase the weight of the user until it is attacked at least once.
Unlike in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, all fighters who acquire a Super Mushroom will deal 1.56x their normal damage with their direct attacks.
In a Giant Special Smash, fighters are heavier than normal, but unlike in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, they don't receive any knockback taken reductions. Their direct attacks still deal 1.64x their normal damage, and the multiplier increases to 3.08x if they acquire a Super Mushroom. In a Tiny Special Smash, fighters who acquire Super Mushrooms will deal 0.676x their normal damage. The Super Mushroom also appears as headgear for Mii Fighters.
In Smash Tour
The Super Mushroom is a red trophy item: when selected, it makes the user start a battle under the effect of a Super Mushroom. Using this trophy cancels the effect of a Poison Mushroom trophy used by an opponent.
The Super Mushroom is one of the items that can appear during a Transformation Smash.

- Super Mushroom
- This mysterious mushroom will cause you to grow several times your normal size. Once you've grown, the power of your attacks and your ability to launch your opponents will increase. However, being so large— and such an easy target—may not be so great in a fight with lots of enemies...
- This mysterious mushroom will just keep sliding until it bounces off a wall. If you touch it, though, you will grow! You'll get stronger and be harder to launch, but you'll also be a much easier target. Maybe standing out so much during a fight isn't such a good idea...

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The Super Mushroom returns once again as an item in Ultimate. Unlike Brawl and Super Smash Bros 4., characters no longer strike a pose when they're growing or shrinking, making their animation similar of that to Melee. This also prevents certain attacks and animations from being interrupted when a player touches one. The Super Mushroom also returns as headgear for Mii Fighters.

Trivia
- In Brawl, a glitch occurs when Pikachu uses Quick Attack on a Super or Poison Mushroom. It will cause the size change super jump.
- In Melee, jumping at the moment that the Super Mushroom's effects wear off also causes characters to perform a super jump that is almost as high as two jumps while wearing the Bunny Hood.
- The largest character a player can achieve without hacking or glitching is by using Mario's up taunt while under the effect of a backfired Lightning in a Giant Melee/Brawl/Smash.
- Mario's taunt in the first four games is similar to the Super Mushroom effect. In his taunt, he grows bigger (as if taking a Super Mushroom).
