Waluigi (ワルイージ, Waluigi) is an antagonistic character from the Mario series.

Origin

Official artwork of Waluigi from the N64 version of Mario Tennis. The racket seen in the image is the same one used by Waluigi in Brawl, Smash 4 and Ultimate.

Waluigi made his debut in Mario Tennis and has become a recurring character in later Mario spin-off games. He is a lanky man with a big, pink nose, a pointed mustache, pointed ears, and eyes surrounded by light blue rings. He wears dark indigo overalls, a purple undershirt, a purple cap with a yellow "Γ" gamma symbol, a pair of white gloves, and a pair of orange pointed shoes. In the Mario spin-off games, Waluigi is shown to have powerful legs, able to easily kick Bowser.

Waluigi is Luigi's self-appointed rival and anti-hero counterpart, just as Wario is the rival of Mario. This rivalry began in the opening cutscene of Mario Tennis where Waluigi and Wario interrupt the final match between Mario and Luigi stating they want to play, but Luigi declines and mocks Waluigi, upsetting him. Like Wario, Waluigi is much raunchier than his counterparts, examples including his frequent use of roses, a universal symbol for romance, as well as his signature crotch chop in the Mario Strikers series. He is also very spiteful and vindictive, often joining Wario's pranks on others as a legitimate act of revenge. Oddly, despite appearing frequently as Wario's partner-in-crime in various Mario spin-off games, he has not physically appeared in a Wario game. Currently, his only appearance in a Wario game is if a Waluigi amiibo is scanned in Wario's amiibo Sketch in WarioWare Gold, in which Wario draws a poor quality picture of him.

This tall, thin, evil-looking guy seems to be Luigi's rival. He works hard at his mischief: Waluigi reportedly spent a lot of time training for his debut in Mario Tennis by honing his ability to antagonize the Mario brothers. While it's general knowledge that he's the same age as Luigi, his relationship to Wario is unclear.

As an Assist Trophy

Waluigi makes his debut as an Assist Trophy. He appears with brown shoes instead of his usual orange shoes, and is armed with his tennis racket from Mario Tennis.

When summoned, Waluigi dashes at a random opponent on stage and stomps them into the ground (although he can stomp multiple opponents at once if others around are caught in the stomps). He stomps the victim(s) multiple times before unleashing a finishing blow with his tennis racket or a kick. His kicks meteor smash if the opponent is a little outside the stage. Unless he attacks constantly, his final attack has a pause which lasts about three seconds. He is relatively easy to avoid on the stage, as he can be avoided by simply jumping over him, and it can be quite easy to lure him off-stage; however, if opponents are careless, he can be quite deadly.

As an alternate costume

Waluigi's color scheme serves as Luigi's purple alternate costume. The "L" on his hat also changes to yellow.

A twig-thin man who sees himself as Luigi's ultimate rival. He spent a long time working silently in the shadow of the Mario Bros. before finally becoming strong enough to compete with them in Mario Tennis. Since then, he's had many brilliant game appearances. While the nature of his relationship to Wario is a mystery, the pair have hatched some devious schemes together.

Waluigi returns as an Assist Trophy, reprising his behavior from Brawl.

As an Assist Trophy, like most of the on-stage Assist Trophies that are invulnerable to attack, Waluigi can be attacked and KO'd.

Similar to Mario and Luigi, his appearance is more cartoonish, with less detail on his clothing and lighter, more solid colors used all around. Notably, his shoes are now closer to the proper orange coloring, as opposed to the brown shoes in Brawl.

As an alternate costume

Waluigi's color scheme returns as Luigi's purple alternate costume, and also serves as Mario's purple alternate costume. The "M" on the latter's hat also changes to yellow, however, the "L" on the former's hat is purple.

As a Mii Costume

Waluigi serves as the basis for the default Waluigi's Cap headgear for the Mii Fighters.

Trophy

Waluigi appears as a trophy in both versions. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, it can be obtained by achieving a score of at least 85 in Rival Smash.

Waluigi returns as an Assist Trophy, reprising his behavior from Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4.

The Waluigi Assist Trophy can be attacked and KO'd, which earns the player an extra point. Training Mode describes his Assist Trophy: Stomps on nearby opponents and then launches them with a racket. He cannot be summoned in the 3D Land, Midgar, Mute City SNES, Norfair, Spirit Train, and Suzaku Castle stages.

Waluigi's Cap returns as a default headgear for the Mii Fighters.

Spirits

Waluigi also appears as an Ace-class primary spirit and is featured on the Standard Bike spirit, while Waluigi's Super Mario Strikers version appears as an Advanced-class primary spirit.

Both Waluigi Spirit Battles use a Luigi puppet fighter.

The Waluigi spirit is fought on the Peach's Castle stage, with the latter and the music track referencing the Waluigi Pinball race course from Mario Kart DS based on the bumper and the two floating inward-angled platforms resembling pinball slingshots. During the battle, Waluigi appears as a hostile Assist Trophy.

The Waluigi (Super Mario Strikers) spirit is fought on the Wuhu Island stage's Swordplay Colosseum layout, referencing the soccer arenas in the Mario Strikers series, which takes place on a field in a crowded stadium. During the battle, the Soccer Ball item will appear, referencing the sport that this spirit's origin game is based on.

Trivia

• In the Super Smash Bros. Direct 4.8.2014, Waluigi was shown to be representing the Wario universe as opposed to the Mario universe. This change was not carried over to the final version of the game.
  • In that same Direct, when Waluigi is laughing, his mouth is open. In the final game, however, his mouth is always closed, even when he is laughing. This is strange, considering how in Brawl, his mouth is open while laughing. This is fixed in Ultimate, where his mouth is opened while laughing.
• Waluigi has been used to introduce a section of a Nintendo Direct discussing Assist Trophies, as shown in the April 2014 Direct regarding SSB4 where Sakurai starts the Assist Trophies section by explaining what they do with a Waluigi plush next to him. Waluigi was also used to demonstrate players being able to KO Assist Trophies in Ultimate.
• In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if Waluigi doesn't reach the ground while stomping in the air, he will repeat the animation (it doesn't have a hitbox, and he doesn't make any noise while doing it either).
• Waluigi is one of the most consistently requested characters to be made playable in Smash, and has a large, vocal fanbase that clamors for his inclusion as a playable character instead of an Assist Trophy, citing his frequent appearance in Mario spin-offs alongside his unique, colorful personality and aesthetic. The Waluigi fanbase was most vocal after developer Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Waluigi would be reprising his role as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and spread memes, videos, artwork, and petitions to get Sakurai to make Waluigi playable; even The Washington Post noted the outpouring of support for Waluigi by making a post about him being "robbed and humiliated by Nintendo", likely as a jab at him being knocked out seconds after being seen. The clamor got even more intense when the Piranha Plant, a common Mario enemy that had never even been playable in its own series before (and, ironically, was Waluigi's default partner in Mario Party 3's Duel Mode), made the cut as a playable character, shocking many and leading people to post memes about how it got in the game before Waluigi. However, Nintendo clarified that while Sakurai is aware of the requests for Waluigi becoming a playable character, making him playable is overall his decision.
• Waluigi and Spring Man are the only Assist Trophies in Ultimate who use an English voice actor in all regions, and two of four in general to hold this distinction, with Kat & Ana and Saki Amamiya sharing this distinction as well.
