Article on Lylat Wiki Krystal

Krystal (クリスタル, Krystal) is a character from the Star Fox series. A later addition to Team Star Fox, she also serves as a love interest to Fox McCloud.

Origin[edit]

Fox using Ice Blast with Krystal's Staff in Star Fox Adventures.

Krystal was originally conceived as the protagonist of a late Nintendo 64 game by Rare called Dinosaur Planet. This title would not come to be as originally envisioned, as Nintendo requested that Rare transform this game into a Star Fox title and move production to the Nintendo GameCube (likely as Rare was being approached by other publishers at the time and the game’s release date being the day before the studio was bought out by Microsoft).

Krystal made her official debut in Star Fox Adventures. At the beginning of the game, she wields a staff to assist her telepathic abilities. She eventually loses the staff and becomes imprisoned by Andross after being tricked into handing over a Krazoa Spirit. Fox eventually finds the staff and uses it throughout the game. Fox would eventually find Krystal trapped in a crystal. Fox learned that the power of the Krazoa Spirits could free Krystal. Fox manages to free Krystal, but Andross was revealed to manipulate Fox into handing over the spirits so he could resurrect himself. After his defeat, Krystal decided to follow team Star Fox and officially join them.

By the events of Star Fox Assault, Krystal is a pilot for team Star Fox, officially replacing Peppy Hare on the roster. Aside from being the love interest of Fox, Krystal would also be of interest to Panther Caroso, to the annoyance of everyone. Krystal would play an important role in fighting off the Aparoids as the first line of defense. Unlike the other pilots, she took great care in not causing collateral damage and would become distressed when destruction occurs. Between this and the events of Star Fox Command, Fox would break up with Krystal and dismiss her from the team out of concern for her safety. Deeply hurt by this, Krystal would fall into a depression and distance herself from everyone except Lucy Hare. She would eventually join the Cornerian Defense Force and would later ask Wolf to join his team. Depending on the ending, Krystal would either stay with Star Wolf, rejoin team Star Fox, get back together with Fox, or start a new life as the bounty hunter Kursed.

Krystal's appearance as an Assist Trophy is based on her appearance in Star Fox Adventures, and her ability to use the staff is based on the opening portion of said game. Ice Blast is the third upgrade for the staff which allows Fox to freeze enemies and environment objects solid for combat and puzzle-solving.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Krystal was considered as a potential playable character during development, but was passed over in favor of Wolf, both because of time constraints and because Wolf's movement and animations would be more similar to Fox's and would require less development.[2]

As a background character[edit]

Krystal is one of the many Star Fox characters who can be contacted via the Star Fox Smash Taunt on Lylat Cruise. Krystal appears in conversations triggered by all three potential characters: Fox, Falco, and Wolf. Through voicing Krystal in these scenes, Teiya Ichiryūsai got the role of Isaac from Golden Sun and Alésia Glidewell got both Zero Suit Samus from Metroid and Knuckle Joe (in English) from the Kirby series.[3]

Krystal also appears as a trophy and three stickers.

Krystal appears in Ultimate as an Assist Trophy. Upon summon, she says "Try me" and attacks fighters with her staff, dealing freezing damage. She is also able to be KO'd in the game. When departing, she says "You're not ready yet!" Training Mode describes her Assist Trophy: Fights with a staff and shoots ice magic at opponents. Her voice clips are reused from Star Fox Assault.

As a background character[edit]

Krystal also once again reprises her role in the Star Fox Smash Taunt on the returning Lylat Cruise stage.

Spirit[edit]

Krystal also appears as a Legend-class primary spirit.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Krystal is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. After Galeem's defeat, Dharkon takes control of Galeem's spirits, including Krystal. Krystal's spirit is located in the Mysterious Dimension sub-dungeon of The Dark Realm.

Krystal's Spirit Battle uses the Fox and Falco puppet fighters and is fought on the Corneria stage. During the battle, Krystal appears as a hostile Assist Trophy.
