Waluigi (ワルイージ, Waluigi) is an antagonistic character from the Mario series. He is Luigi's self-appointed rival and anti-hero counterpart, just as Wario is the rival of Mario. Despite his connections to Wario, he is considered to be part of the Mario universe in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Waluigi made his first appearance in mariowiki and like Princess Daisy, he has appeared in nearly every Mario spin-off since serving as Wario's partner-in-crime and best friend (although oddly, he has never appeared in a Wario game). He is Luigi's "evil" rival, in the same way that Wario is Mario's. Along with this, Waluigi has a hat and gloves with a "Γ" gamma symbol, which is similar to Wario's "W", which is also an inverse or an upside-down "M". Unlike Luigi's green hat and shirt, Waluigi has a purple shirt and hat with black overalls and orange elf-like shoes, while his Γ symbol is yellow. Waluigi was created by Camelot's Fumihide Aoki and is voiced by Charles Martinet, like Wario and both Mario Bros.
Waluigi made his debut in mariowiki and has become a recurring character in later Mario spin-off games. He is a lanky man with a big, pink nose, a pointed mustache, pointed ears, and eyes surrounded by light blue rings. He wears dark indigo overalls, a purple undershirt, a purple cap with a yellow "Γ" gamma symbol, a pair of white gloves, and a pair of orange pointed shoes.

Being the opposite of Luigi, Waluigi is mischievous and cunning, with Charles Martinet claiming that he directs his lines as a frustrated, self-pitying soul that believes the world is out to get him. Like Wario, Waluigi is much raunchier than his counterparts, examples including his frequent use of roses, a universal symbol for romance, as well as his signature crotch chop in the Mario Strikers series. He is also very spiteful and vindictive, often joining Wario's pranks on others as a legitimate act of revenge.
Waluigi is Luigi's self-appointed rival and anti-hero counterpart, just as Wario is the rival of Mario. Oddly, despite appearing frequently as Wario's partner-in-crime in various Mario spin-off games, he never appears in a Wario game.

As an Assist Trophy
Waluigi made his debut as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

In Brawl, Waluigi appears with brown shoes instead of his usual orange shoes, and is armed with his tennis racket from Mario Tennis. In Smash 4 onward, he retains his signature orange shoes.

When summoned, he dashes at a random opponent on stage and stomps them into the ground (although he can stomp multiple opponents at once if others around are caught in the stomps). He stomps the victim(s) multiple times before unleashing a finishing blow with his tennis racket or a kick. His kicks meteor smash if the opponent is a little outside the stage. Unless he attacks constantly, his final attack has a pause which lasts about three seconds. He is relatively easy to avoid on the stage, as he can be avoided by simply jumping over him, and it can be quite easy to lure him off-stage; however, if opponents are careless, he can be quite deadly.

In Brawl, like most Assist Trophy characters that appear on-stage, Waluigi is invincible; however, in Smash 4 onward, he can be attacked and even KO'd. In Ultimate, KO'ing the Waluigi Assist Trophy earns the player an extra point.

Ultimate's Training Mode describes the Waluigi Assist Trophy: Stomps on nearby opponents and then launches them with a racket. He cannot be summoned in the 3D Land, Midgar, Mute City SNES, Norfair, Spirit Train, and Suzaku Castle stages.

In Brawl, SSB4, and Ultimate, Waluigi appears as an Assist Trophy wielding his tennis racket, which is a reference to his first appearance in Mario Tennis. He will try to stomp players into the ground; however, Waluigi has never done this in any other game, though several games such as mariowiki have shown that he has very powerful legs (in the aforementioned game, he knocks out the usually highly durable Bowser with a single kick). His finishing move either involves kicking the player or hitting the player with his tennis racket. His appearance has slightly changed in Brawl, as Waluigi has orange shoes in the Mario games, not brown; although his orange shoes were retained in SSB4 and Ultimate. The tennis racket he is holding has retained its design from Mario Tennis.

He behaves the same way he does in previous games, although he stays on stage much longer than in Brawl and SSB4 and can now be launched and reward a point if KO'd. Waluigi (ワルイージ, Waluigi) is an antagonistic character from the Mario series.

Origin

Official artwork of Waluigi from the N64 version of Mario Tennis. The racket seen in the image is the same one used by Waluigi in Brawl, Smash 4 and Ultimate.

Waluigi made his debut in Mario Tennis and has become a recurring character in later Mario spin-off games.

Waluigi is Luigi's self-appointed rival and anti-hero counterpart, just as Wario is the rival of Mario. Oddly, despite appearing frequently as Wario's partner-in-crime in various Mario spin-off games, he never appears in a Wario game.

Overview

As an Assist Trophy

Waluigi as an Assist Trophy attacking in Brawl.

This tall, thin, evil-looking guy seems to be Luigi's rival. He works hard at his mischief: Waluigi reportedly spent a lot of time training for his debut in Mario Tennis by honing his ability to antagonize the Mario brothers. While it's general knowledge that he's the same age as Luigi, his relationship to Wario is unclear.

He spent a long time working silently in the shadow of the Mario Bros. before finally becoming strong enough to compete with them in Mario Tennis. Trivia

  • In the Super Smash Bros. Direct 4.8.2014, Waluigi was shown to be representing the Wario universe as opposed to the Mario universe. This change was not carried over to the final version of the game.
    • In that same Direct, when Waluigi is laughing, his mouth is open. In the final game, however, his mouth is always closed, even when he is laughing. This is strange, considering how in Brawl, his mouth is open while laughing. This is fixed in Ultimate, where his mouth is opened while laughing.
  • Waluigi has been used to introduce a section of a Nintendo Direct discussing Assist Trophies, as shown in the April 2014 Direct regarding SSB4 where Sakurai starts the Assist Trophies section by explaining what they do with a Waluigi plush next to him. Waluigi was also used to demonstrate players being able to KO Assist Trophies in Ultimate.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if Waluigi doesn't reach the ground while stomping in the air, he will repeat the animation (it doesn't have a hitbox, and he doesn't make any noise while doing it either).
  • Waluigi is one of the most consistently requested characters to be made playable in Smash, and has a large, vocal fanbase that clamors for his inclusion as a playable character instead of an Assist Trophy, citing his frequent appearance in Mario spin-offs and unique, colorful personality and aesthetic. The Waluigi fanbase was most vocal after developer Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Waluigi would be reprising his role as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and spread memes, videos, artwork, and petitions to get Sakurai to make Waluigi playable; even The Washington Post noted the outpouring of support for Waluigi by making a post about him being "robbed and humiliated by Nintendo", likely as a jab at him being knocked out seconds after being seen. The clamor got even more intense when the Piranha Plant, a common Mario enemy that had never even been playable in its own series before (and, ironically, was Waluigi's default partner in Mario Party 3's Duel Mode), made the cut as a playable character, shocking many and leading people to post memes about how it got in the game before Waluigi. However, Nintendo clarified that while Sakurai should be aware of the requests for Waluigi becoming a playable character, making him playable is overall his decision.[1]
  • Waluigi and Spring Man are the only Assist Trophies in Ultimate who use an English voice actor in all regions, and two of four in general to hold this distinction, with Kat & Ana and Saki Amamiya sharing this distinction as well.
