Subspace Emissary Groups
Near the end of the Subspace Emissary, characters are placed into significant groups based on where they are met. Note that alternate forms of characters are not listed.
Large Groups
These groups have a significant number of characters. All of these groups would merge into one prior to Entrance to Subspace.
Canyon Team
Halberd Team
Isle of the Ancients Team
Small Groups
These groups are noted to have only three characters. All of them have a unique task in the Subspace Emissary.
Villains
This team consists of characters who tend to capture characters as trophies.
Subspace Team
This team consists of characters who rescue others in Subspace (Part I). All of them are guaranteed to fight in the final battle.
Secret Characters
These characters are only available after completing the Subspace Emissary at least once by fighting them in secret rooms.
In addition, Sonic is the only character that's not part of any of these groups.
Stages represented by trophies
The following stages in the Super Smash Bros. series are represented by trophies. Note, in order to qualify, the trophy must share the same name or depict an entire stage not just stage elements. Trophies earned from "Trophy Tussle" events do not count.

Trivia
- Each of these universes has one Melee newcomer with a reflection move; Mario with Dr. Mario's Super Sheet, The Legend of Zelda with Zelda's Nayru's Love, Star Fox with Falco's Reflector, and Pokémon with Mewtwo's Confusion.
- If Zelda and Sheik count as separate characters, each universe has one more newcomer than the other in Super Smash Bros. Melee; Star Fox has one, Pokémon has two, Mario has three, and The Legend of Zelda has four.
Quad Groupings
Grouping of characters from four universes.
- Universes are Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, and one more starter universe from the original Super Smash Bros.
- The Legend of Zelda characters are either Link or Zelda.
- Star Fox characters are either Fox or Falco.
- All characters must appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Debuts and Special Recoveries

- Tether: A special cable which catches platform edges (only available in Super Smash Bros. Brawl).
- Parachute: A type of parachute opens up after recovering to slow down falls.
- Spring: The character jumps on a trampoline to recover which can be used by other characters (only used by third-party characters).

Reflection Table Expressed as Payouts
Since the reflector table uses multipliers, this is what would be like based on casino cash payouts. 1:2 means a projectile that deals 2% damage or travels at 2 units of speed will gain 1% damage or 1 unit of speed added to the original value when reflected for a total of 3% damage or 3 units of speed. PUSH means the reflected projectile will have the same amount of damage or speed with its original value.

Giant battle
Just like the teams, the giant characters the player fights are picked randomly from a group that has already been predetermined by the game. This time, giant battle can occur for any universe (except The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong). The number of allies are dependent on the stage. On Stage 2, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are the player's allies. On Stages 3-5, one ally is given and will be from one of the universes represented. On Stages 6-10, the player is not given any allies. This type of battle will occur twice in a playthrough.
Multi-character battle
Just like the teams, and the giant characters the player fights, the multiple-character fight is picked randomly from a group that has already been predetermined by the game. This level consists of 10 multiples of 1 of 9 different characters. This battle occurs starting on Stage 3 and two fights of this type can be encountered.
Metal battle
All characters represented on Stages 6-10 are eligible to appear as a metal character in this 1-on-1 battle against the player. Only one metal battle can be encountered. Unlike Melee, the stage will always be the home stage of the opponent.
