Waluigi (ワルイージ, Waluigi) is a character from the Mario series. He is Luigi's self-appointed rival and anti-hero counterpart; just as Wario is the rival of Mario. He is considered to be part of the Mario universe in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Origin

Waluigi made his first appearance in Mario Tennis and like Princess Daisy, he has appeared in nearly every Mario spin-off since serving as Wario's partner-in-crime and best friend (although oddly, he has never appeared in a Wario game). He is Luigi's "evil" rival, in the same way that Wario is Mario's. Along with this, Waluigi has a hat and gloves with a "Γ" gamma symbol, which is similar to Wario's "W", which is also an inverse or an upside-down "M". Unlike Luigi's green hat and shirt, Waluigi has a purple shirt and hat with black overalls and orange elf-like shoes, while his Γ symbol is yellow. Waluigi was created by Camelot's Fumihide Aoki and is voiced by Charles Martinet, like Wario and both Mario Bros.

In Brawl, SSB4, and Ultimate, Waluigi appears as an Assist Trophy wielding his tennis racket, which is a reference to his first appearance in Mario Tennis. He will try to stomp players into the ground; however, Waluigi has never done this in any other game, though several games such as Mario Party 3 has shown that he has very powerful legs (in the aforementioned game, he knocks out the usually highly durable Bowser with a single kick). His finishing move either involves kicking the player, or hitting the player with his tennis racket. His appearance has slightly changed in Brawl, Waluigi has orange shoes in the Mario games, not brown; although the orange shoes were retained in SSB4 and Ultimate. The tennis racket he is holding has retained its design from Mario Tennis.

Waluigi appears as a trophy in Melee, that can be unlocked through the Lottery once at least 250 other trophies have been collected.

Waluigi

This tall, thin, evil-looking guy seems to be Luigi's rival. He works hard at his mischief: Waluigi reportedly spent a lot of time training for his debut in Mario Tennis by honing his ability to antagonize the Mario brothers. While it's general knowledge that he's the same age as Luigi, his relationship to Wario is unclear.

As an Assist Trophy

Waluigi appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He has brown shoes instead of his usual orange shoes. When summoned, he dashes at a random opponent on stage and stomps them into the ground (although he can stomp multiple opponents at once if others around are caught in the stomps). He stomps the victim(s) multiple times before unleashing a finishing blow with his tennis racket or a kick. His kicks meteor smash if the opponent is a little outside the stage. Unless he attacks constantly, his final attack has a pause which lasts about 3 seconds. He is relatively easy to avoid on the stage, as he can be avoided by simply jumping over him, and it can be quite easy to lure him off-stage. However, if opponents are careless, he can be quite deadly.

Waluigi

A twig-thin man who sees himself as Luigi's ultimate rival. He spent a long time working silently in the shadow of the Mario Bros. before finally becoming strong enough to compete with them in Mario Tennis. Since then, he's had many brilliant game appearances. While the nature of his relationship to Wario is a mystery, the pair have hatched some devious schemes together.

As a color change

Luigi possesses a black and purple color swap which gives him a similar appearance to Waluigi. The L on his hat also changes to yellow in Brawl, just like Waluigi's inverted L. The L, however, doesn't flip itself like Waluigi's does.

Waluigi returns as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. 4. He behaves the same as in Brawl, albeit he can be defeated if he takes enough damage, with him having his own KO animation. Just like Mario and Luigi, his appearance is more cartoon-like, with less detail on his clothing and lighter, more solid colors used all around. Of particular note are his shoes, which are now closer to the proper orange coloring, as opposed to the brown shoes in Brawl.

Waluigi also appears as a challenge reward trophy, unlocked by achieving a score of at least 85 in Rival Smash:

Waluigi

A crooked mustache and a long, red nose— Waluigi has "villain" written all over him. He considers himself Luigi's rival. He's cunning and quick. When summoned into battle, he'll rush the nearest fighters and stomp them into the ground—then thwack them with his foot or tennis racket!

Long, red nose? Handlebar moustache? Bendy body? Yep, this lanky schemer is Luigi's rival, Waluigi. In this game, he'll dash over to the nearest fighter and stomp on them to bury them in the ground. Then he'll finish them off with a big kick or a whack with his tennis racket. Ouch!

Luigi retains his Waluigi-inspired palette swap (albeit with a purple L instead of yellow), while Mario also gains a Waluigi-inspired costume, with the M on his hat becoming yellow.

Waluigi reprises his role as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He behaves the same way he does in previous games, although he stays on stage much longer than in Brawl and SSB4 and can now be launched. Like Mario and Luigi, his hair and clothing now feature simple detailing, similar to Brawl, though his shoes keep their orange color like they were in SSB4. Training Mode describes his Assist Trophy: Stomps on nearby opponents and then launches them with a racket.

Mario and Luigi retain their Waluigi-inspired costumes in this game.

Waluigi's hat is an unlockable hat for all Mii Fighter types.

Trivia

• In the Super Smash Bros. Direct 4.8.2014, he appeared to be representing the Wario universe as opposed to the Mario universe. This change was not carried over to the final version of the game.
  • Funnily enough, Wario himself had yet to be confirmed at the time of the direct's airing.
• Waluigi has been used to introduce a section of a Nintendo Direct discussing Assist Trophies, as shown in the April 2014 Direct regarding SSB4 where Sakurai starts the Assist Trophies section by explaining what they do with a Waluigi plush next to him. Waluigi was also used to demonstrate players being able to KO Assist Trophies in Ultimate.
• In the Super Smash Bros. Direct 4.8.2014, when Waluigi is laughing, his mouth is open. In the final game, however, his mouth is always closed, even when he is laughing. This is strange, considering how in Brawl, his mouth is open while laughing. This is fixed in Ultimate, where his mouth is opened while laughing.
• In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if Waluigi doesn't reach the ground while stomping in the air, he will repeat the animation (it doesn't have a hitbox, and he doesn't make any noise while doing it either).
• Waluigi is one of the most consistently requested characters to be made playable in Smash, and has also consistently enjoyed a large, vocal fanbase that clamors for his inclusion as a playable character instead of an Assist Trophy, citing his frequent appearance in Mario spin-offs and unique, colorful personality and aesthetic. The Waluigi fanbase was most vocal after developer Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Waluigi would be reprising his role as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and spread memes, videos, artwork, and petitions to get Sakurai to make Waluigi playable; even The Washington Post noted the outpouring of support for Waluigi by making a post about him being "robbed and humiliated by Nintendo", likely as a jab at him being knocked out seconds after being seen. The clamor got even more intense when the Piranha Plant, a common Mario enemy that had never even been playable in its own series before, made the cut as a playable character, shocking many and leading people to post memes about how it got in the game before Waluigi. However, Nintendo clarified that while Sakurai is aware of the requests for Waluigi becoming playable, making him playable is overall his decision.
