Metal Mario's Stage (also known as Metal Mario's Residence, Metal Cave, Metal Crystal, or Misty Mine) is the stage on which Metal Mario is fought in SSB's 1P Game. This is the only method of accessing this stage, other than through the use of cheat codes or other devices. Many people consider this stage to also have one of the better soundtracks of SSB. It is quite small and judging by the stage, it would have probably been used for singles and most likely banned for doubles.

The stage is made up of two small platforms. The bottom one is slightly raised to the right and lower to the left. Above the middle of the bottom platform is a floating platform. The overall look of it is rather metallic and metal looking. There are large crystals in the back of the stage. There is a metal path in the middle of the larger platform on the stage. Many elements from this stage are similar to elements from the Hazy Maze Cave stage in Super Mario 64, which is where the Metal Cap that turned Mario into Metal Mario could first be found.

Meta Crystal (メタ・クリスタル),[1] also known as Metal Mario's Stage, Metal Cavern, and a variety of other names, is the stage on which Metal Mario is fought in the 1P Game of Super Smash Bros. This stage can be accessed only in 1P Game or through cheat codes, hacks, or other devices.

Layout[edit]

Pikachu and Metal Mario in Meta Crystal.

Meta Crystal has two platforms, one on top of another. The top platform is a small soft platform. The bottom platform is the main platform that slants upwards to the right, and downwards to the left.

The stage is quite small, probably to counter how difficult it is to hit Metal Mario offstage. Items have a very low spawn rate.

Origin[edit]

Metal Mario in the Cavern of the Metal Cap.

This stage is loosely based Cavern of the Metal Cap, a secret area in Super Mario 64. It can be accessed within the Hazy Maze Cave level by jumping into a pool of liquid metal hidden behind a set of double doors in the Underground Lake area of the cave. Upon entering the cavern, Mario will transform into his metal power-up form for a short time. Hitting the Metal Cap Switch will activate the green Metal Boxes in the game, which will allow Mario to transform into Metal Mario by breaking them.

This stage features elements from both levels. The stage's setting takes place in an underground area decorated with glimmering crystals similar to the Cavern of the Metal Cap. The platforms and the wire walls are similar to those found in the Hazy Maze Cave. The large glimmering crystals resemble a design previously featured in the underground levels of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Additionally, the skybox of the stage, an overgrowth of dark blue crystals, loosely resembles the background of the ice cave levels in the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3.
