The Panda Global Rankings (PGR) is a biannual list compiled by Panda Global Gaming's PG Stats team ranking the world's top 50 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U smashers. The first list was released on May 27th, 2016, the second on January 19th, 2017, and the third on July 7th, 2017.

Methods

PGR v1 (January 2015 - May 2016)

The first list was compiled by 48 panelists and the PG Stats team -- Dom, suar, and Zan and took into account tournament results from Apex 2015 to 2GGT: Fresh Saga. The players' rankings are purely based on tournament placings and set counts, with a heavy emphasis on 7 major events: Apex 2015, CEO 2015, EVO 2015, Paragon Los Angeles 2015, The Big House 5, GENESIS 3 and Pound 2016[1].

It also includes a separate and subjective metric voted on by the panelists referred to as "X-Factor", which follows a more similar approach to Melee It On Me's SSBMRank. A player's X-Factor is the difference between their PGR ranking and their spot on the list that the surveyors rated them at. A player with a very positive X-Factor would theoretically be a notable figure in the community feared by top players but would not have the results to back them up. On the other hand, a player with a negative X-Factor would be somewhat of a "hidden boss" showing impressive results and wins with a lack of acknowledgement from the community. The full list was revealed after LVL UP EXPO 2016 and Get On My Level 2016, but was created before those tournaments started, making some of the set records and notable wins exclusive to the time beforehand.

Tournaments evaluated

Bolded tournaments signify majors, and non-bolded tournaments are defined as nationals by the PG Stats team.

Panelists

The subjective components used to determine the X-Factors were derived from a survey that was sent to over 50 community members from around the world.

The United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Europe, and Australia were represented among the 48 individuals who were surveyed that answered back.

PGR v2 (May - December 2016)

The second list took into account results from LVL UP EXPO 2016 to 2GGT: ZeRo Saga included. Spike, juddy, and Giant were added to the PG Stats team to more accurately cover the Japanese, European, and Mexican scenes. The tournaments included were classified into tiers according to the number of ranked players attending and the number of entrants in general, with tier 1 including major events and tier 4 locals. Just like the first rankings, a heavy emphasis was put on 6 tier 1 tournaments: CEO 2016, EVO 2016, Super Smash Con 2016, The Big House 6, UGC Smash Open, and 2GGT: ZeRo Saga. The X-Factor metric made its return as well. [2]

Tournaments evaluated

Bolded tournaments signify tier 1 events, and non-bolded tournaments are defined as tier 2 events by the PG Stats team.

Panelists

The number of panelists was reduced from 48 to 30. The survey used was similar to the first one.

Tristate (7) - Tweek, Dabuz, Austy, ANTi, Gunblade, Max Ketchum, Dom
SoCal (5) - Larry Lurr, NAKAT, Keitaro, VoiD, Zan
New England (4) - Pugwest, TMPR, Rorec, suar

PGR v3 (January - June 2017)

The third list will evaluate tournament results at events from Midwest Mayhem 6 to CEO 2017, and will feature a larger panelist group compared to the previous rankings. [3][4] As a response to feedback concerning previous tournament classifying methods, a new system will be implemented, called the Tournament Tier System (TTS). The TTS ranks tournaments based on four factors in their singles tournaments: entrant numbers, PGR v2 attendees, top 20 PGR v2 attendees and prize pool, and categorizes them into S, A, B and C tiers, with S signifying tournaments of the largest caliber. In order to account for and provide more balance towards tournament scenes such as Japan, which generally do not feature prize money in their tournaments, the TTS algorithm rewards top player density over prize money. Weekly and bi-weekly events will be ignored by TTS as not to affect local environments with the pressure of global rankings, and not to skew the PGR towards specific regions. The X-Factor returns, but unlike the previous lists, players outside the Top 50 were counted for the X-Factor list. Additionally, the panelist survey took place before MomoCon 2017, so many X-Factors appear inaccurate, or in one instance, non-existent. The video for ranks 11 to 20 was delayed due to technical difficulties, according to Panda Global's statistics director suar.

PGR v4 (July - December 2017)

The Tournament Tier System (TTS) returns and retains a similar formula to the last list, but there have been notable changes. The biggest change is that there are now two separate methods for determining the TTS score: a combination of total entrants and pot bonus, and attendance of PGR ranked players. A tournament's actual tier and score is based on whichever one of these two methods provides the highest score. This is mainly meant to prevent penalizing tournaments that have low total entrants but a high concentration of top level players, such as invitationals like Niconico Tokaigi 2017, and lower the score of tournaments with a great number of entrants but little to no top level attendees. Other changes include giving points based on the pot bonus instead of the prize pool, so as not to penalize regions that lack prize pools (such as Japan); separating PGR players into five different levels instead of the two from the previous season; and the introduction of the new S+ tier, separate from and higher than the regular S tier.

The PGR v4 season ended with 2GG Championship on December 3rd, 2017, with an off-season lasting from December 4th to January 18th.

PGR v4 was released from January 2nd to January 12th, 2018, as confirmed in a PGStats tweet.[5]

PGR v5 (January 2018 - TBA)

On November 10th, 2017, PGStats announced an official offseason along with the ending and beginning dates for PGRv4 and v5, respectively. The offseason lasts from December 4th, 2017 to January 18th, 2018, with GENESIS 5 being the first event of the regular PGR v5 season. As exceptions, three notable tournaments that had been scheduled prior to the offseason announcement were still counted as part of the PGRv5 season, those being Umebura T.A.T. and the Sumabato Tokaigi Qualifiers 1 and 2.

While the Tournament Tier System returned, it again featured a number of notable changes, first announced in a blog post by PGStats member PracticalTAS. Most significantly, prize pools now have no effect at all on tournament ratings. Individual tournament values were hidden, leaving only the broader tiers publicly visible. Certain tournaments with a consistent reputation of notability will now be given "pre-ratings" that serve as a bare minimum value, with the ability to rise above the pre-rating still possible. Finally, the general values necessary to reach each tier besides the C-tier were heightened; and the S+-tier was removed, with the S-tier taking its place and with a new A+-tier in between it and the A-tier.

v3 X-Factor adjusted rankings (subjective)

As players outside of the official rankings's top 50 were also counted for this list, there are a total of 100 players in this season's X-Factor rankings as opposed to PGR's standard 50. The X-Factor rankings only took into account tournaments that happened prior to 2GGC: Nairo Saga; consequently, FOW was not included in the X-Factor rankings because he did not have the results to qualify for the PGR when the survey was given.
