Evolution 2015, or simply EVO 2015, was the 14th edition of the Evolution Championship Series, a fighting game tournament held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, which took place on July 17th to 19th, 2015 at the Bally's Las Vegas / Paris Las Vegas Casino. It featured Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U singles, as well as a Melee doubles side-event.

EVO 2015 currently stands as the second largest Melee and Smash 4 tournament to date, with 1,926 entrants for Smash 4, 1,869 entrants for Melee, and 3,284 unique players across both games. Contrary to expectations that there would be a large overlap on the player base for both games, Joey Cuellar, EVO's tournament director, confirmed that only 517 players entered both games, an overlap of only 16%.[1][2]

EVO 2015 allowed custom special moves in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U by utilizing the Official Custom Moveset Project, and was notably the last major tournament to use the project. Furthermore, several of the game's DLC characters, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu, were not allowed due to their then-recent release[3].

Official game lineup[edit]

The official game lineup for EVO 2015 was announced on January 20th, by Joey Cuellar, during a live stream on Twitch.tv, with Mike Ross as host. Notably for this year's edition was the inclusion of two Smash games on the official lineup, for the first time, with the return of Super Smash Bros. Melee alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The decision to include both games was made after continued interest in Melee was noted by the staff, following the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with the record breaking numbers for Apex 2015.[4]

Trivia[edit]

  • ZeRo, who won the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U event, did not lose a single game in tournament, making him the first person ever to do so.
    • He was also the first Chilean to win an EVO event, as KaneBlueRiver won the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 event the next day.
  • Nintendo of America marketing manager and translator Bill Trinen registered to participate in the SSB4 tournament, under the tag "Th | trintroll",[5] with the "Th" crew tag apparently standing for Treehouse. However, due to the passing of Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, Trinen changed his plans and did not attend, as EVO was held on the same weekend as Iwata's funeral.[6]
    • In response to Satoru Iwata's passing, a moment of silence was held before Smash 4's top 8.
  • MadCatz once again gave out gold FightSticks for EVO winners this year. The top 3 of each official EVO game, including both Smash games, received one.[7][8][9]
  • After receiving his 5th place medal in Melee singles, Mango took it off and threw it into the crowd.
  • Plup humorously forgot to appear on stage to receive his medal with the rest of the top 8 players.
  • PC Chris did not attend the tournament, although imposters attended in the Melee and Smash 4 tournaments using his name.
  • This tournament marks highest ever placing of a Pac-Man main at a Smash 4 national, with Abadango placing 4th.
  • This tournament also marks Ken's highest placing at a supermajor since Super Champ Combo, placing 13th.
