Green Mario (緑マリオ, Green Mario) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was announced during the Nintendo Direct on August 7, 2013, as part of Nintendo's "Year of Luigi".[1] Charles Martinet provides his voice as well as Mario's and Wario's, although through the same voice clips that were used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.[2]

Traditionally, Green Mario has always been an unlockable character revealed after the game's release. This installment is the first to break that tradition,[1] as he was both revealed before release and is a starter now.

Changes from Brawl

Green Mario has received a mix of buffs and nerfs, with the former slightly making up for the latter. A fair amount of his moves, including all of his KOing moves, have been nerfed in power and his recovery has worsened. However, he has now become a faster character overall and has received improvements to his combo and neutral games. But his stupid Fireballs have become way too spammy when you fight scrubs on For Glory.

Aesthetics

  • Change Like Mario, Green Mario has a more cartoonish and sleeker appearance instead of the more realistic look he had in Brawl, which is more inline with his appearance in the Mario games as well as the new aesthetic used in SSB4. Like King Dedede and several other characters, his facial expressiveness has been exaggerated even further to reflect his characteristic cowardliness. His sound effects are also more cartoonish to emphasize their silliness, and he has also undergone many visual changes to his attacks, some of which have new animations. Unlike previous installments, Green Mario's chest will always be facing the foreground, just like Mario.

Attributes

  • Buff Green Mario dashes faster.
  • Buff Green Mario's air speed is slightly higher.
  • Buff Green Mario's short hop is lower but his full jump is higher.
  • Change Green Mario has a new jumping animation where he scuttles while in midair, similar to what he does in certain Mario games.

Ground attacks

  • Change Neutral attack's first two jabs appear to have new animations.
  • Buff The final hit of neutral attack now sends Green Mario forward, increasing its range.
  • Nerf All tilts deal less damage (Up tilt does 6% instead of 9%, forward tilt does 8% instead of 10%, and down tilt does 8% instead of 9%).
  • Buff Up tilt does less knockback, making it much better at juggling, and a better combo starter. Thus, it is considered to have much more utility overall.
  • Change Down tilt now knocks opponent upwards and to the side a bit.
  • Buff Dash attack's first hits link together better, and its last hit has much more knockback.
  • Nerf Forward smash is less powerful.
  • Nerf Up smash (sweetspotted) and down smash deal less damage (Up smash sweetspot does 14% instead of 15%, and down smash deals 14% instead of 16%).
  • Buff Down smash is slightly faster.

Aerial attacks

  • Nerf Neutral air and back air can no longer be performed twice in a short hop.
  • Nerf Neutral, forward, up, and down aerial deal less damage (Neutral aerial does 12% instead of 14%, foward aerial does 9% instead of 10%, up aerial does 11% instead of 13%, down aerial does 10% instead of 11%).
  • Nerf Neutral air does less damage and has much lower knockback growth, being unable to KO in the early 100%s.
  • Buff Neutral air's lower power makes it a better combo starter.
  • Buff Forward aerial appears to have greater range and knockback. It is also is slightly quicker.
  • Buff Back air deals 2% more damage (14% instead of 12%).
  • Nerf Back air has more ending lag.
  • Buff Down aerial has been sped up, and appears to have a slightly larger hitbox. It is much easier to meteor smash with. Both the sweetspot and sourspot are stronger, especially the sourspot.

Throws/other attacks

  • Buff His grab has less ending lag.
  • Change Green Mario now grabs with one hand as opposed to two.
  • Buff Forward throw is stronger.
  • Nerf Back throw deals 2% less damage throughout. It is also weaker, KOing about 30-40% later.
  • Buff Down throw appears to have less ending lag and lower knockback growth, allowing Green Mario more follow up options.
  • Change Down throw has a new animation, where Green Mario throws the opponent on the ground and Ground Pounds the opponent, similar to Peach and Wario's down throws.
  • Change During his up taunt, Green Mario's facial expressions are different than in Brawl.

Special moves

  • Buff Fireballs go slightly farther and are shot faster.
  • Buff Green Missile deals more damage when uncharged, dealing 10% uncharged as opposed to 5%.
  • Nerf Charging Green Missile past a certain point will cancel the move, instead of being able to hold the charge indefinitely, which makes it impossible to stall out using it and forcing your opponents to go into it's path if they want to continue the fight.
  • Change Green Missile has a 1 in 10 chance of misfiring instead of a 1 in 8 chance.
  • Nerf Super Jump Punch doesn't go as far horizontally after ascent. It also gains less vertical distance. Fire Jump Punch is slightly weaker, now KOing opponents around 60-80% instead of around 50% (depending on the opponent's weight and Green Mario's rage).
  • Buff Green Mario Cyclone is stronger, and the hits link together better.
  • Nerf Green Mario Cyclone gains much less altitude when used in the air. It also deals less damage (9% instead of 12% total).
  • Change Green Mario's Final Smash has been changed to the Poltergust 5000, replacing Negative Zone.

Down special Default Green Mario Cyclone 1.5% (loop hits), 3% (last hit) Green Mario rapidly spins around dealing damage the opponent before sending them flying.
Custom 1 Mach Cyclone 6% Pushes back opponents who are close, and can rise a great amount compared to the other variations. However, only the ending does any damage.
Custom 2 Clothesline Cyclone 8% Slower, and only hits once, but is stronger. But Green Mario cannot float with it.
Final Smash Poltergust 5000 30% (captured), 10% (throw) The Poltergust 5000 from Green Mario's Mansion: Dark Moon suddenly appears on Luigi's back. He then proceeds to suck up nearby opponents. Then, he will shoot them out and potentially K.O. them.

Taunts

  • Initiates a variety of poses. In order: he faces the screen with one hand on his waist while the other gives the V sign, referencing his animation from Luigi's Mansion when he'd find a key; he turns to the right slightly, pointing his hands that direction, and what's new in this installment is the look of terror on his face while in this pose. Then, he places his right hand just below his nose, as seen in his artwork for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Then he turns away from the screen, crouching, as if he's sad, just like his Bogey animation in Mario Golf and finally, he faces the screen once more, with both hands on his face, giving a frightened look from the cover of Luigi's Mansion.
  • Green Mario has his arms straight down and his body fully erect. The pose causes Green Mario to gently fall forward and briefly balance on his belly. He says "pow pow". It is based off of one of his victory poses from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
  • He bashfully kicks the ground and sighs. Originates from Super 64. If it contacts with an opponent that is hanging on a ledge or off-stage, Green Mario can perform a powerful meteor smash; if the opponent is on the stage, then they receive set knockback.

On-Screen Appearance

A green Warp Pipe appears. Green Mario leaps out with his hands on his head and hesitantly says "Let's-a go!"[2]

Victory Fanfare

A flourished remix directly from Brawl based on the sound clip that would play when Green Mario reaches the end of a level in Super Mario Bros. It is shared with Mario, Peach, and Dr. Mario.

Luigi

North America (3DS) Luigi recently celebrated his 30th anniversary with the Year of Luigi, but all that attention just made him even more shy and awkward. In Smash Bros., Luigi takes a lot of cues from his brother in fighting style, adding flair to moves like Super Jump Punch. His taunts, however, are truly unique.
North America (Wii U) Luigi recently celebrated his 30th anniversary with the Year of Luigi, but all that attention just made him even more shy and awkward. In Smash Bros. (as in life), Luigi tends to follow his brother's lead, but he adds his own flair to moves like Super Jump Punch. His taunts, however, are 100% Weegee.
Europe With the Year of Luigi long gone now, it's up to you to prove to everyone that Mario's cowardly co-star is still awesome. He may share a lot of moves with his brother, but he still puts his own spin on things. When you Super Jump Punch a foe just right, for example, the noise he makes is epic. His taunts are pretty funny too. Try them!

Luigi (Alt.)

North America Luigi may sulk when his down taunt is used, but his little dejected kick can actually hurt a nearby enemy fighter. It can even trigger a meteor smash! Notice an enemy leisurely hanging from the edge? Run over and pout on the edge—that foe will be the one with something to pout about!
Europe Luigi might look a bit sulky when you use his down taunt, but when he does it next to another fighter, it can get in a little hit - well, a "little hit" that can also sometimes be a meteor smash! Say you spot a fighter hanging off the edge of the stage. Just give them a pout and a kick with this taunt, and they'll fall to their doom.
