Super Smash Con 2023 was the seventh edition in the Super Smash Con series held in Chantilly, Virginia, from August 10th-13th, 2023. The top 2 non-qualified players of Ultimate singles qualified for Watch The Throne.
Tournament summary
Smash 64
At 255 entrants, this was the fifth largest Smash 64 tournament of all time, and Isai's first supermajor tournament victory since Apex 2014. This was the first tournament since Super Smash Con 2016 where Alvin missed top 8 since, placing 9th at the event. After, Isai defeated #1 seed kysk in Winners' Semis 3-0, but then lost to reigning Super Smash Con champion Kurabba in Winners' Finals 1-3. After his loss, Isai did not drop a game after that, with dominant 3-0's over both SuPeRbOoMfAn in Losers' Finals and Kurabba in both sets of Grand Finals.
Melee
This tournament marked the third major tournament victory in a row for Zain, following his victories at Fête 3: By the Sea and Get On My Level 2023. The tournament notably featured one of Hungrybox's best performances of the year; after losing to moky in top 64, he made an impressive loser's run defeating lloD, Zuppy, Mang0, moky and Cody Schwab to place 2nd after taking Zain to game 5 in grand finals. This tournament was the first since the SSBMRank Summer 2023 was released, with the top 8 of the tournament accurately reflecting the top 8 ranked players among those who attended, with the exception of Zuppy (rank 15) making top 8 instead of KoDoRiN (rank 10). This tournament was ChuDat's lowest placement in his Melee singles career, placing 97th.
Brawl
At 223 entrants, this is the largest Brawl singles event since Apex 2014 in 2014, and the first Brawl singles event to surpass 200 entrants since the end of its main competitive lifespan. Bike upset 686M in Winners' Top 24 with an upset factor 7, becoming the first player to get a major upset on 686M in the post-Smash 4 era. However, 686M tore up the Losers bracket, defeating 8 players, including Player-1 twice in Grand Finals, to take the tournament. As 686M used Ice Climbers for most of his run, this was the first Brawl major/supermajor won by a player who did not use Meta Knight since Super Smash Con 2016. Also, since Mikeray4 and Player-1 won doubles using Snake and Diddy Kong, this was the first time since Critical Hit 3, the first Brawl major, that a team won a major doubles bracket without using Meta Knight.
Smash 4
Prior to the tournament's start, attention was drawn to all four of the tournament's Top 4 seeds being Bayonetta mains (and five out of the Top 6 in the final seeding). Seed #5 Dabuz in particular noticed the Bayonetta-dominant seeding, remarking "If any TOs can't find me during my pool that is ok do not attempt to look for or contact me".[1] With solo Bayonetta mains filling all of the Top 3 for the second year in a row and a solo Bayonetta main winning the past three years in a row, there was continued fatigue from spectators in the era post-Ultimate's release. Even Meta Knight in Brawl singles was not nearly as dominant at the tournament, a character regarded to be more overpowered than Bayonetta in Smash 4. High level players such as KEN, IcyMist, and Sonix dropped out from the bracket in interest of playing Ultimate, with some players such as Dabuz and Miya opting to not play in the bracket entirely, continuing the trend of apathy towards the game from some high level players post-Ultimate's release.
Mistake placed 1st, winning the past three Smash 4 majors and Super Smash Cons in a row. Cyel (formerly reflection), the #3 seed, was eliminated at 9th place, an underperformance after placing 3rd the previous year at Super Smash Con 2022 and winning Apex 2022. Interestingly, Little Mac had an impressive three representatives in Top 32: Alternis, WonderBread, and Potato257. Goblin placed 9th with Roy, the best placement for a solo Roy at a major tournament.
Ultimate
At 2,607 entrants, this is currently the third-largest Ultimate singles event and the largest Ultimate singles event since 2019.
acola and Miya won doubles, becoming the first full Japanese team to win Ultimate doubles at an international major since Shuton and Zackray won at The Big House 9 in October 2019, almost four years prior.
The third day of the tournament saw a slew of upsets to the point where a Twitter upset bot was overloaded and died.[2] The most notable upsets were on the #1 seed Sparg0, who was upset by #64 seed Ly 3-2 (upset factor 11) and #32 seed Aaron 3-2 (upset factor 9) to place 49th, tying GENESIS 6, 2GG: Kongo Saga, and GENESIS 7 as his worst offline placement ever. Other notable players who were eliminated early include #23 seed Jakal, who was upset by #279 seed Crash101 1-2 (upset factor 8) and #87 seed TM7_ZAP 0-2 (upset factor 4) to place 129th; #14 seed Sisqui, who was upset by #115 seed Jules 1-2 and #110 seed Dany 2-3 (both upset factor 6) to place 97th; and #10 seed Kurama, who was upset by #119 seed Peanut 2-0 (upset factor 7) and #58 seed 1-3 Geist (upset factor 5) to place 65th. In addition, #62 seed IcyMist upset #3 seed Sonix 3-1 (upset factor 9) on Winner's side, although Sonix ultimately made it into top 32, while #8 seed Shuton was knocked into Loser's by #25 seed AndresFn 3-2 (upset factor 4), marking only the third time a European player has defeated Shuton.
The final day of the tournament saw several more notable upsets as all the remaining top 8 seeds in Winner's side, aside from acola, were knocked into Loser's before top 8: #4 seed Miya was upset by #13 seed Dabuz 3-2 (upset factor 4); #5 seed Light was upset by his New England rival and #21 seed Marss 3-0 (upset factor 4); #6 seed Tweek was upset by #19 seed Neo 3-1 (upset factor 4); and Riddles lost 3-0 to acola. Ultimately, Miya was the only other top 8 seed to make top 8, eliminating Shuton 3-2, Light 3-1, and Tweek 3-2 along the way. The other two remaining top 8 seeds were eliminated by #29 seed DDee, who defeated Sonix in an infamous set where DDee used Pac-Man to time the latter out, with Sonix ultimately quitting before finishing the final game (upset factor 7); as well as #7 seed Riddles 3-1 with Steve (upset factor 4). Outside of the top 8 seeds, this marked the first time KEN defeated Zomba, having lost to him four other times in the past.
The top 32 notably had the three best Corrin players in the world at that time -- SHADIC, Neo, and Ly -- start out on the Winner's side of bracket. In addition, Olimar had the most representation in the top 32, at 4 -- Shuton, Dabuz, Noi, and Candle.
The top 8 saw acola's only game 5 set of the tournament as Neo brought him to game 5 last stocks, with both players at a high percent. Neo ultimately lost the set as he whiffed a crucial forward smash. Dabuz defeated KEN 3-2 to become the first qualifier for Watch The Throne. acola then defeated Dabuz 3-1 to make it into Grand Finals. In the Loser's bracket, Miya saw a strong Loser's run defeating DDee 3-0 in the runback, KEN 3-1, and Zomba 3-0 (qualifying for Watch The Throne) before losing to Dabuz 2-3 in the runback to place 3rd. However, Dabuz was swiftly 3-0d by acola in Grand Finals, giving acola his first Premier victory of the season, as well as adding to Dabuz's list of second-place finishes at majors/supermajors.

Trivia
- During the second round of the Smash 64 Combo Contest, the camera cut away from the winning combo, performed by Huntsman with two controllers, who walked up to the judges' table prior to the final hit. This initially led everyone to believe the combo had failed, with the Charge Shot missing Fox. However, the combo actually succeeded with Fox falling back into the Charge Shot's range for the KO, earning it the nickname "The Invisible Combo".[11]
- Huntsman later agreed to redo the combo on stream after he won.[12]
- Before Ultimate doubles on August 11th, Cosmos felt his knee lock, making him visit an emergency room. He was able to recover in time to play his singles pools the following morning, though he had to use crutches.[13]
- Grand Finals of Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, and Ultimate singles all featured a player over 30 (Isai, Hungrybox, Player-1, and Dabuz, respectively).
