The Skill parameter has been removed from Smasher infoboxes, and in its place are the new "Best historical ranking" and "Best tournament result" parameters. SmashWiki needs help adding these new parameters to Smasher infoboxes, refer to the guidelines here for what should be included in these new parameters. |
When adding results to Smasher pages, include each tournament's entrant number in addition to the player's placement, and use the {{Trn}} template with the matching game specified. 2GG: Kongo Saga was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor tournament held in La Mirada, California, from December 7th-8th, 2019. The tournament celebrated the four year anniversary of 2GG Sagas and the event revolved around the Donkey Kong and the Banjo-Kazooie series. It was the last Saga event ran by 2GGaming before they disbanded.
Tournament summary[edit]
With an entree count of 909 entrants, 2GG: Kongo Saga was the biggest 2GG event for Ultimate and one of the biggest tournaments of the year, being the sixth and final Ultimate supermajor of the Fall 2019 PGRU season. Similar to most 2GGaming events, the "2GG Curse" remained prevalent at this tournament, having the highest placed player who solo-mained a Donkey Kong or Banjo-Kazooie player being Japanese Diddy Kong player Twinkle who ended his tournament run at 33rd. Additionally, no players from SoCal were able to place top 32 at this tournament with the highest placing players of the region, Nito, Eon, and Nicko, all tying in a 33rd place finish.
The most notable upset came from #31 seed Ned defeating #2 seed Nairo 3-2 (upset factor 9) during winners top 32 qualifier. Nairo would ultimately fail to place top 8 at this tournament, being eliminated by Samsora at 9th place. The second most notable came from #114 seed Runes defeating the #15 seed KEN (upset factor 6) early in pools in a close 2-1 fashion, sending KEN into losers where his run was stopped by #34 seed quiK (upset factor 3). This placed KEN at 65th, his lowest placement at an Ultimate tournament, tying with his placement at Umebura Japan Major 2019.
Outside of these instances, some of the most notable upsets of the tournament include #270 seed ΩRugal defeating #27 seed Kurama (upset factor 7), #216 seed Lukewarm defeating #41 seed kept 2-1 (upset factor 5), #220 seed Kite defeating #37 seed Sonido 2-0 (upset factor 5), #24 seed Stroder being eliminated by Sonic players #105 seed Phoenix 2-1 (upset factor 5) and #57 seed Sonix 2-0 (upset factor 3), #51 seed Big D defeating #14 seed ProtoBanham 2-0 (upset factor 4), #71 seed Klaatu defeating both #23 seed Raito 3-0 (upset factor 4) and #47 seed Abadango 2-1 (upset factor 2), #52 seed Gackt defeating #20 seed Kome 3-2 (upset factor 3), #16 seed Cosmos 3-2 (upset factor 4), and #13 seed VoiD 2-1 (upset factor 4), #86 seed Dakpo defeating #43 seed Kola 2-0 (upset factor 2), and #879 seed ZUCC defeating #111 seed player 4 2-0 (upset factor 6).
The top 8 for the tournament marked a multitude of milestones for the early metagame, including the first time a Link and Greninja made top 8 at a Ultimate supermajor. Lea placed 7th with Greninja after falling early to moxi in pools and going on an extensive losers run, defeating Lumbre, Sonix, Myran, Shuton, Goblin, and Dabuz, before being eliminated by Light who was in the midst of his own lengthy losers run. T placed 5th with Link, qualifying for top 8 after defeating players such as Zackray, Gackt, and Dabuz, before being eliminated back-to-back by MkLeo and Maister. To this day, this tournament remains the greatest run seen by a Link player at a major/supermajor in Ultimate, causing many people to compare it to T's best run as the character in Smash 4 with 3rd at 2GGC: Civil War, another 2GGaming hosted event.
This tournament would be a bit of a return to form for Tweek, who primarily went Wario after dedicating himself to mostly Joker since Return to Yoshi's Island and was his first top 8 since The Big House 9 two months prior. He went through his winner's side going game 5 against many top players, including Glutonny where they fought in the Wario ditto match, a set that is considered one of the greatest ditto matches in Ultimate history. At the same time, MkLeo was continuing his dominance of the season, only dropping 4 games in his entire bracket up until winners finals. This would be where MkLeo and Tweek would meet in bracket, who was Tweek's current bracket demon and continuing their rivalry for the season. Tweek would be up 2-1 in the set before MkLeo brought it back with game 4 and 5 to swing him the victory, continuing the infamous "Game 4 Leo" moniker that MkLeo obtained during the fall 2019 season. After Tweek won 3-1 against Maister in losers finals, the two would have a runback in grand finals where Tweek would take the first two games in a two-stock fashion before MkLeo clutched a reverse 3-0 to take the tournament, closing the chapter on major 2GGaming events in Smash history. MkLeo's victory marked his third supermajor victory of the season behind EVO 2019 and Super Smash Con 2019. This would also mark the only tournament MkLeo won during the Fall 2019 PGRU season without being sent to losers in any sort of fashion.
