Revision as of 18:44, July 21, 2021

This page documents the update history of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. All additions, fixes and changes are grouped together by the update they were introduced. Some updates have corresponding Changelogs that can be accessed by clicking on the update itself. The changelogs record all gameplay adjustments introduced in the update, which are categorized by character and attached to a symbol that annotates the effect of the adjustment. A green symbol signals a definite buff. A red symbol signals a definite nerf. A blue symbol signals a neutral adjustment. A yellow symbol signals a relation to a glitch. The "Universal" category refers to adjustments to the game as a whole instead a single character.

1.0.0

1.0.0

The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 (December 8th in some time zones). Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, only the physical version of the game is possible to play on 1.0.0. To access this version today, delete any game data downloaded onto the system memory or an inserted Micro SD card. Then, turn off any internet connections and keep them off while the game is inserted and save data is on the system to avoid update notifications.

    • Kirby has been given a special Hero copy ability where he wears Erdwin's Coronet, Erdwin's Shield, and the Supreme Sword of Light. These are all items that are available in Dragon Quest XI. Kirby's usual neutral special is replaced with the Frizz move, which can be charged to Frizzle and Kafrizz. Kirby also gains the MP Gauge, which functions identically to Hero.
    • The FS Meter automatically depletes if it is not used within 20 seconds of being fully charged.
    • How to Play now contains options to view the help screen for Online Tourney.
    • The Techniques menu has been updated with two new sections for "Special Moves That Change When Charged" (Frizz, Zap, and Woosh) and "Command Selection". They are the 82nd and 83rd options.
    • Five new Smash Tag icons have been added, all relating to Dragon Quest. The first four are the default skins of the Hero, and the last is their series symbol, Erdrick's symbol.
    • The Koopalings and Alph now have their own pictures to go along with their bios.

6.0.0

6.0.0

This update was released on November 6th, 2019 (November 7th in some time zones).

  • General
  • Offline
    • The following spirits appear in the Shop on the Vault menu:
    • The Tockles spirit is now available to battle on Hero's Spirit Board, in addition to being available as a gift like before.
  • Adjustments to Arenas.
    • There are two new Types of arena: "Elite Only", which has a bright yellow color, and "Beginners Only", which has a green color. Both of them are placed after "amiibo Battle". These two types are mutually exclusive; if the player has access to "Elite Only", "Beginners Only" disappears and they can't enter any arenas of that type.
    • In Arenas, rules can now be changed without closing the arena.
    • A new option has been added for stage selection when creating an Arena, "Random Battlefield and Ω form". True to its name, it acts as a combination of the Random Battlefield and Random Ω Form settings.
    • The Arena Log is now a much more substantial part of Arenas:
      • The log takes up a larger area when not expanded, now touching the ring, allowing more messages to be seen.
      • If a ruleset is changed or not changed, it is shown in the window.
      • The Arena Log now counts the number of battles done in the Arena, as well as how many battles a player has won in a row.
      • Several of the Arena Log's automated messages, such as "The battle has started", "The battle has ended", and "[playername] has racked up 10 KOs" have been changed.
      • Messages sent by players appear in the log.
    • Predefined messages can now be sent in the Arena. They are in a menu opened with the R button. 91 messages are included under the All section, which are divided between Greetings, Preparation, Before Battle, Thoughts, and Goodbyes sections. In addition to appearing in the Arena Log, messages will also appear above the token of the player who sends it.
    • Button prompts are now shown in the Arena. This includes A when holding a token over the Waiting Area, Ring, or Spectator Stands, L to expand the Arena Log, and R to send a message.
    • The Arena ID is now shown in the top right below the Player List button, in addition to being present on the Rules popup as before.
  • Misc.

  • Stage
    • The Small Battlefield stage has been added. Players can also set Small Battlefield as a Preferred rule in Online battles.
    • Players can now select any stage-specific music for the Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.
      • If a particular song is not selected, a random song from all music is chosen based on an average of the My Music settings for each individual stage.
    • The "Random" option on the Stage Select screen has been split into individual icons for Random, Random Battlefield, and Random Ω.
      • Random Custom Stages also has its own unique icon now as well.
  • Selecting a song on the stage selection screen now only plays the song rather than playing the song and progressing to the character selection screen.
  • Online
    • The online user experience has been adjusted.
      • The tick rate of 1-on-1 battles not involving spectators has been increased from 30Hz to 60Hz, matching the in-game frame rate. This improves responsiveness, but decreases stability on low quality connections.[2]
      • Average input delay of 1-on-1 battles not involving spectators has been reduced from roughly 5 frames to 4 frames.[3]
    • The way matching is determined when using Preferred Rules has been adjusted.
    • Following a look at the current number of players eligible for Elite Smash, the threshold for entry has been recalculated to allow more players. Additionally, the way initial values for Global Smash Power are calculated has also been adjusted.

Further investigations and adjustments to Online mode are expected for future patches.

      • Fixed an issue in which a fighter caught by Minecart teleports to the position in which they were caught.
      • Fixed an issue in which Meta Knight would clip through any terrain which wasn't native to a stage, including those generated by fighters, items and Poké Ball Pokémon after losing a stock.
    • Steve's up victory pose was changed to remove the Steak after he eats it.

9.0.2

This update was released on November 11th, 2020 (November 12th in some time zones).

10.0.0

10.0.0

This update was released on December 17th, 2020 (December 18th, 2020 in some time zones).

  • General
    • The following content is now available for purchase:
    • Kirby has been given a new copy ability where he gains Sephiroth's hair and his Neutral special is replaced with Flare / Megaflare / Gigaflare.
    • The Techniques menu has been updated with four new sections for "Wall Stab", "Shadow Flare", "Scintilla", and "Winged Form". They are the 103rd, 104th, 105th, and 106th options.
    • Two new Smash Tag icons have been added, both relating to Sephiroth: his original outfit and his coatless outfit.
    • Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.
      • Fixed an issue where getting hit by a Hammer right before Zoroark's final attack connects would result in a fighter getting stuck in midair. Summoning Zoroark again would proceed to crash the game.
      • Fixed an issue where some characters would remain at their T-pose model by performing an attack before Zoroark's Fury Swipes.[6]
      • Fixed an issue where after using Winged Pikmin, trying to attack in midair with a Pikmin would not work.[7]
  • Sephiroth Challenge: A limited time event from December 17th-22nd where players can fight Sephiroth on Northern Cave in 3 difficulties: Easy, Normal, and Very Hard. Winning this fight will grant the player access to both ahead of the official release date of December 22nd (December 23rd in some time zones).
  • Misc.
    • The Spirit List now lists Final Fantasy spirits as being from the "FINAL FANTASY Series" rather than "FINAL FANTASY VII".
    • The Songs List now lists Final Fantasy music as being from the "FINAL FANTASY VII Series" rather than "FINAL FANTASY VII".
    • Previously, if the game's language was set to either variant of Chinese, Cloud's name was shown in English on the character selection screen and the Spirits mode. Now, he has his name written properly in hanzi.[8]

In theory, quick play and 1v1 lobbies should feel better.”
