Shield damage is an effect that certain attacks in the Super Smash Bros. games have. All hitboxes have a shield damage value, which will additively change the damage dealt to shields. For most attacks, this value is set as 0, however, for some attacks, this value can be either a positive or negative number, adding or subtracting from the damage the attack deals to shields. For example, Donkey Kong's Headbutt will do more damage to an opponent's shield than his forward smash since its hitbox has high shield damage, despite his forward smash having higher base damage. The Fan and Marth's Shield Breaker are the most well-known examples of attacks that do significant shield damage. Quite a few attacks deal extra shield damage, but most such attacks do not have a high value for it.

Some attacks have the opposite effect: they have negative shield damage, dealing less damage to shields than to characters. This concept was used for a few moves in the original SSB, but removed for all except the Home-Run Bat in Melee, and no known attacks use it in Brawl or SSB4. Ultimate reintroduces the concept as a significantly more widespread mechanic, particularly for projectiles after update version 3.0.0.

Bonus shield damage is generally fixed; it is not increased by charging a smash attack, nor does it decrease when an attack is stale.
