(Undid edit by LukaSmash: Source? Ruben (a well-known dataminer) says there's no changes to characters (https://twitter.com/Ruben_dal/status/1844127996229349699). I was also easily able to separate the ICs with Belay and pull up the MA dial and choose an Art during knockback)

The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 (December 8th in some time zones). Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, only the physical version of the game is possible to play on 1.0.0. To access this version today, delete any game data downloaded onto the system memory or an inserted Micro SD  card. Then, turn off any internet connections and keep them off while the game is inserted and save data is on the system to avoid update notifications.
The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 at midnight local time.

Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, the only way to play this version digitally is to have pre-ordered and pre-loaded the game, then have disabled automatic updates, then have rejected the incoming day 1 patch update at the time of unlocking the pre-load.

Accessing this version today requires a physical cart and a Switch that has never downloaded any ''Ultimate'' updates since the last time it was formatted. (Therefore, accessing it on a Switch that has downloaded any ''Ultimate'' update requires formatting the console, losing save data for any other games that have not been backed up through Nintendo Switch Online.) However, newer cartridges may have updates pre-installed—with some having versions up to version [[#2.0.1|2.0.1]]—which instead makes it possible to downgrade to that pre-installed version but not to 1.0.0 or any other version.

Latest revision as of 00:17, October 10, 2024

This page documents the update history of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. All additions, fixes and changes are grouped together by the update they were introduced. Some updates have corresponding Changelogs that can be accessed by clicking on the update itself. The changelogs record all gameplay adjustments introduced in the update, which are categorized by character and attached to a symbol that annotates the effect of the adjustment. A green symbol signals a definite buff. A red symbol signals a definite nerf. A blue symbol signals a neutral adjustment. A yellow symbol signals a relation to a glitch. The "Universal" category refers to adjustments to the game as a whole instead a single character.

1.0.0[edit]

1.0.0[edit]

The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 at midnight local time.

Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, the only way to play this version digitally is to have pre-ordered and pre-loaded the game, then have disabled automatic updates, then have rejected the incoming day 1 patch update at the time of unlocking the pre-load.

Accessing this version today requires a physical cart and a Switch that has never downloaded any Ultimate updates since the last time it was formatted. (Therefore, accessing it on a Switch that has downloaded any Ultimate update requires formatting the console, losing save data for any other games that have not been backed up through Nintendo Switch Online.) However, newer cartridges may have updates pre-installed—with some having versions up to version 2.0.1—which instead makes it possible to downgrade to that pre-installed version but not to 1.0.0 or any other version.

1.1.0[edit]

1.1.0[edit]

This first update was released alongside the game's Australian release at midnight on December 7th, 2018, its first official release in any time zone (also known as a "day 1 patch").[1][2]

  • Offline
    • Added a Hard difficulty to Adventure mode.
    • Incorporated team colors for Spirit Battles and when fighting false characters in the final battle.
    • Made it so that music played in a Spirit Battle preview will continue into the battle itself, instead of restarting when the battle begins.
    • Removed the ability to set a player's damage to what is selected on the Training Mode menu by clicking on the player damage bar.
    • The revival platforms now appear in the same location in Training Mode as in Versus Mode.
    • Players who have save data for Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! on their Nintendo Switch will be gifted with the Partner Pikachu or Partner Eevee spirit, respectively.
  • Online
    • Online now includes Quickplay, Battle Arenas, Spectate, and Background Matchmaking.
    • Global Smash Power will now be displayed.
    • Note that the above requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Game Data Adjustments
    • The ability to receive spirit event data has been added.
    • The ability to receive presents has been added.
    • The number of challenges has increased from 111 to 124, as it now includes a new page with the online challenges.
  • DLC Content
    • The special bonus for the Fighters Pass Vol. 1, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Rex's Mii Fighter costume (Swordfighter type), has been added.
  • Misc.

This update was released on January 29th, 2019 (January 30th in some time zones).[1]

  • General
    • Piranha Plant is now available for purchase and download.
    • Kirby has been given a Piranha Plant copy ability in which he wears a Piranha Plant and his neutral special is replaced with the Ptooie move.
    • Pressing both jump buttons now inputs a short hop.
    • Fixed an issue where the KO score included one's teammate KO when Team Attack is on.
    • Characters now respawn in the center of Ω form stages instead of to the left.
    • Bug fixes:
      • Patched out the Infinite Assist Trophy glitch.
      • Patched out the Slingshot Crash.
      • Fixed a glitch where if Olimar had any Attack-increasing spirits equipped, the Attack multiplier would be applied twice for any of his attacks involving Pikmin, causing extremely large damage outputs.
      • The song "Bein' Friend" was renamed to "Bein' Friends".
      • Reversed the function of hide models when the camera gets too close to the fighters in camera mode. This was done mainly to avoid the error of showing Split models.

    • Fixed an issue in ver. 2.0.0 where an adventure challenge featuring King K. Rool could not be completed.
  • Misc.
    • Various gameplay fixes.

2.0.2[edit]

This update was released on April 2nd, 2019 (April 3rd in some time zones).

  • General
    • Added support for the Ken amiibo. The patch notes mention that support for the Smash Bros. Daisy and Young Link amiibo was also added, but the 1.0.0 datamine suggests that Daisy and Young Link Smash amiibo were supported since launch,[citation needed] and amiibo support for these characters in general was already possible via the Mario series Daisy and Majora's Mask Link figures.

3.0.0[edit]

3.0.0[edit]

This update was released on April 17th, 2019 (April 18th in some time zones).[1]

  • General
    • The following content is now available for purchase and download:
    • Kirby has been given a Joker copy ability in which he wears Joker's hair and mask and his neutral special is replaced with the Gun move. He does not gain the Rebellion Gauge, so he does not have access to Arsène and Gun Special by extension.
    • How to Play now contains options to view the help screens for DLC Spirits, Stage Builder, Edit Video and Shared Content.
    • Mode Guide now contains selections for Stage Builder and Shared Content. The Replays section now contains information on Edit Video.
    • An additional question concerning Stage Builder has been added to the FAQ.
    • There is now a button to view the Credits in the bottom-right corner of the Help menu. This version is different from the Classic Mode and World of Light credits; it simply scrolls the names in the center of a black screen while playing the Vault's theme, and has extra companies and names relating to downloadable content, such as Atlus. These credits can be fast-forwarded, reversed, and paused.
    • The Techniques menu has been updated with two new sections for "Gun / Gun Special" and "Rebellion Gauge". They are the 80th and 81st options.
    • Three new Smash Tag icons have been added, all concerning Joker: his Phantom Thief outfit, his Shujin school uniform, and the Persona series symbol, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts logo.
    • Chrom now uses the Fire Emblem Awakening victory theme.
    • The Announcer now properly calls out Stamina Mode if it is the set game mode.
    • Shortened downtime for Perfect Shielding projectiles.
    • Consecutive dodge rolls have more endlag.
    • No Palutena’s Guidance scenes for Ultimate's DLC fighters, instead Ultimate's DLC fighters will use the same generic Palutena’s Guidance scene used previously for Smash 4's DLC fighters.
    • Added support for the Pichu, Pokémon Trainer, Squirtle and Ivysaur amiibo.
  • Offline
  • Online
    • Replays, videos, Mii Fighters and custom stages can now be posted online via Shared Content.
      • Players cannot post replays of online/local wireless battles on custom stages, or videos that include custom stages.
    • It is now easier to be matched with players who have a similar Global Smash Power in Quickplay.
    • Players can now sync the game with Smash World, a service accessible via the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app.
      • They can view content posted to Shared Content, and create spirit teams from the spirits they have collected.

3.0.1[edit]

This update was released on April 25th, 2019 (April 26th in some time zones).[1]

  • Offline
    • A bug where winning with a Final Smash while on Joker's route in Classic Mode would prevent the game from progressing has been fixed.
    • A bug where aiming the Lightning Chariot beyond the blast zones on certain stages would cause the game to close has been fixed.
  • Misc.
    • Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.

4.0.0[edit]

4.0.0[edit]

This update was released on July 30th, 2019 (July 31st in some time zones).[1]

  • General
    • The following content is now available for purchase and download:

Kirby's neutral special is replaced with the Frizz move, which can be charged to Frizzle and Kafrizz. Kirby also gains the MP Gauge, which functions identically to that of Hero.
    • The FS Meter automatically depletes if it is not used within 20 seconds of being fully charged.
    • How to Play now contains options to view the help screen for Online Tourney.
    • The Techniques menu has been updated with two new sections for "Special Moves That Change When Charged" (Frizz, Zap, and Woosh) and "Command Selection". They are the 82nd and 83rd options.

    • Alph and the Koopalings now have their own pictures for tips specifically related to them.
  • Offline
    • Very Easy difficulty has been added to Adventure mode.
    • Snapshots can be added to the time line in Edit Video.
    • Steel, grass, sponge, paper, and yarn terrains have been adjusted in Stage Builder.
    • The damage meter is now displayed when testing stages in Stage Builder.
    • Characters now immediately appear in Challenger's Approach instead of "after a while."[4][5]
      • The tutorial page stating that rematches will appear "after a while" no longer appears normally, and can only be seen by manually pressing Y on the Challenger's Approach mode or from the How to Play menu.
      • It is no longer possible for multiple characters to become rematch-eligible at once.
      • A new Continue menu with a rematch button appears immediately after losing a Challenger's Approach fight, alongside an option to change the player's character and a quit button. This Continue menu also appears if the user tries to quit the match from the Pause menu. If the user chooses the quit button, the current challenger will move to the back of the queue.
    • The following spirits will appear in the Shop on the Vault menu:
      • Hero's Comrades
      • Cetacea
      • Slime
        • enhances to King Slime

    • A pop-up will appear on the results screen when a fighter has been unlocked into, or kicked out of Elite Smash. Opponents can no longer be rematched and the game will return to the Quickplay menu.

5.0.0[edit]

5.0.0[edit]

    • Added a special version of the music track Tourney: Winner Announcement without the beginning fanfare that plays when a player returns to the Online Tourney bracket after watching a replay.

6.0.0[edit]

6.0.0[edit]

This update was released on November 6th, 2019 (November 7th in some time zones).[1]

  • Offline
    • The following spirits will appear in the Shop on the Vault menu:
    • The Tockles spirit is now available to battle on Hero's Spirit Board, in addition to being available as a gift like before.
  • Online
    • Adjustments to Arenas
      • There are two new types of arena: "Elite Only", which has a bright yellow color, and "Beginners Only", which has a green color. Both of them are placed after "amiibo Battle". These two types are mutually exclusive; if the player has access to "Elite Only", "Beginners Only" disappears and they can't enter any arenas of that type.
