Sandbag made its debut in Melee, alongside the new Home-Run Contest event. In the mode, players are given ten seconds to hit Sandbag as far as possible using a Home-Run Bat. Sandbag is given a visible damage percentage in this mode, as to allow players to estimate how far it will travel when hit by the Home-Run Bat.

Sandbag is considered a character, allowing the game to record its damage percentage and allowing players to grab it. Sandbag can also be controlled by a human player through the use of the debug menu. However, a majority of its moveset is not programmed, as it is not intended to move or otherwise act as a standard combatant. As a result, attempting to attack, midair jump, or shield with it will cause the game to freeze. In addition, Sandbag cannot be KOed, even after passing the blast lines, and it can eventually crash the game if it falls too far beyond them, as the game will eventually be unable to calculate its position on the screen. As Sandbag lacks animations for moving and jumping, it uses its idle stance for such movements.

In Brawl, Sandbag reprises its role in the Home-Run Contest. However, Sandbag is lighter and it also slides further after landing from a hit. Between games, Sandbag also became an item instead of a character, and therefore, it can no longer be grabbed or thrown. Its programming, however, contains unused subactions for character-based situations, such as the event of being grabbed, suggesting that it may have formerly been intended to remain as a character.

Origin
The wikipedia is a real world item. It is, as the name suggests, a bag full of sand or other material. It is used for a multitude of purposes, one of them being used to absorb blows and strikes. Versions made specifically for this purpose were created and evolved into the modern wikipedia, which Sandbag is directly inspired by. In Japanese, the English loanword "sandbag" is used to refer to punching bags.

Trivia
Names in other languages
*Sandbag is technically defined as a non-playable character, and therefore cannot be grabbed and thrown by players, and is programmed not to move. Although Sandbag cannot normally be controlled by human players, it is possible to circumvent this through the use of the debug menu through an Action Replay. Doing so allows players to control it and make it move and jump, but attempting to make it attack will usually freeze the game, depending on the version, on some versions absolutely nothing happens, doing a midair jump sometimes freezes the game as well, and attempting to shield will always freeze the game; in addition, knocking it off stages will not KO it, and it can eventually crash the game if it falls too far away from the blast lines. Sandbag has no animations for moving or jumping, and as a result, it uses its "idle stance" for such movements.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS in-game description

Sandbag (サンドバッグくん, Sandbag-kun) is a character from the Stadium game Home-Run Contest in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It also appears as an item during matches in Brawl, SSB4, and Ultimate.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

In Home-Run Contest[edit]

Sandbag in Melee during the Home-Run Contest.

Trophy[edit]

The Sandbag trophy is obtained by completing the Home-Run Contest with every character.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Home-Run Contest[edit]

Sandbag as seen in Brawl's Home-Run Contest.

Like in Melee, Sandbag's trophy is unlocked by getting a distance with all characters in the Home-Run Contest. Note that characters who may be switched during matches, namely Zelda and Sheik, Samus and Zero Suit Samus, and the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, do not need to be repeatedly used in order to attain the trophy.

As an item[edit]

Example of a "CD Factory" made using Stage Builder.

As well as its appearance in the Home-Run Contest, Sandbag can appear as an item during matches. Sandbag is a unique item in that while it can release items upon being hit, like the crate and capsule, it cannot actually be picked up and thrown. It can, however, be swallowed by Kirby, King Dedede, and Wario, as well as Munchlax.

As players have a degree of modification over what Sandbag can drop via the Item Switch, Sandbag is also of particular interest to use in CD Factories, a type of custom stage made using Brawl's Stage Builder.

On the Online Practice Stage[edit]

Online Practice Stage Brawl.jpg

Sandbag appeared on the Online Practice Stage, and players were given the option to practice combos or otherwise attack it while waiting for Wi-Fi matches to start. Sandbag's damage percent couldn’t be seen, though it did take more and more knockback the more it was hit. If sent below the bottom blast line, Sandbag would respawn in the center of the stage; this did not occur if Sandbag passed the upper blast line.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Sandbag's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate appearance.

Sandbag returns in Ultimate as an item. As a humorous aesthetic, Sandbag now shows visible happiness if left alone for a period of time or when it is grabbed. Sandbag can be grabbed and thrown, much like in Melee (unless it's in the Home-Run Contest). It has a weight of 115.

Sandbag also appears when testing a Spirit Team or a Mii Fighter, or a controller configuration in the Options menu. While Sandbag no longer appears as the primary opponent in the Online Practice Stage, it can randomly appear as an item instead.

With the return of Home-Run Contest in version 5.0.0, Sandbag once again reprises its role. Sandbag has infinite launch resistance for the first hit that connects with it, and now blushes when at high damage.

Spirit[edit]

The Sandbag also appears as an Advance-class support spirit. It can be first obtained by reaching 250% or more during battle.

The Sandbag's Spirit Battle uses an unmoving Samus puppet fighter, referencing how the Sandbag is an idle character, and is fought on the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage's Ω form. During the battle, the Home-Run Bat appears and the player has ten seconds to defeat Samus, referencing the similar gameplay mechanics in the Home-Run Contest.

Origin[edit]

The sandbag is a real world item. It is, as the name suggests, a bag full of sand or other material. It is used for a multitude of purposes, one of them being used to absorb blows and strikes. Versions made specifically for this purpose were created and evolved into the modern punching bag, which Sandbag is directly inspired by. In Japanese, the English loanword "sandbag" is used to refer to punching bags.
