The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 (December 8th in some time zones). Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, only the physical version of the game is possible to play on 1.0.0. To access this version today, delete any game data downloaded onto the system memory or an inserted Micro SD  card. Then, turn off any internet connections and keep them off while the game is inserted and save data is on the system to avoid update notifications.
The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 at midnight local time.

Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, the only way to play this version digitally is to have pre-ordered and pre-loaded the game, then have disabled automatic updates, then have rejected the incoming day 1 patch update at the time of unlocking the pre-load.

Accessing this version today requires a physical cart and a Switch that has never downloaded any ''Ultimate'' updates since the last time it was formatted. (Therefore, accessing it on a Switch that has downloaded any ''Ultimate'' update requires formatting the console, losing save data for any other games that have not been backed up through Nintendo Switch Online.) However, newer cartridges may have updates pre-installed—with some having versions up to version [[#2.0.1|2.0.1]]—which instead makes it possible to downgrade to that pre-installed version but not to 1.0.0 or any other version.

This page documents the update history of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. All additions, fixes and changes are grouped together by the update they were introduced. Some updates have corresponding Changelogs that can be accessed by clicking on the update itself. The changelogs record all gameplay adjustments introduced in the update, which are categorized by character and attached to a symbol that annotates the effect of the adjustment. A green symbol signals a definite buff. A red symbol signals a definite nerf. A blue symbol signals a neutral adjustment. A yellow symbol signals a relation to a glitch. The "Universal" category refers to adjustments to the game as a whole instead a single character.

1.0.0[edit]

1.0.0[edit]

The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018 at midnight local time.

Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, the only way to play this version digitally is to have pre-ordered and pre-loaded the game, then have disabled automatic updates, then have rejected the incoming day 1 patch update at the time of unlocking the pre-load.

Accessing this version today requires a physical cart and a Switch that has never downloaded any Ultimate updates since the last time it was formatted. (Therefore, accessing it on a Switch that has downloaded any Ultimate update requires formatting the console, losing save data for any other games that have not been backed up through Nintendo Switch Online.) However, newer cartridges may have updates pre-installed—with some having versions up to version 2.0.1—which instead makes it possible to downgrade to that pre-installed version but not to 1.0.0 or any other version.

1.1.0[edit]

1.1.0[edit]

This first update was released alongside the game's Australian release at midnight on December 7th, 2018, its first official release in any time zone (also known as a "day 1 patch").[1][2]

  • Offline
    • Added a Hard difficulty to Adventure mode.
    • Incorporated team colors for Spirit Battles and when fighting false characters in the final battle.
    • Made it so that music played in a Spirit Battle preview will continue into the battle itself, instead of restarting when the battle begins.
    • Removed the ability to set a player's damage to what is selected on the Training Mode menu by clicking on the player damage bar.
    • The revival platforms now appear in the same location in Training Mode as in Versus Mode.
