In ''GoldenEye 007'', there is an item called the "Proximity Mine". The player simply throws the mine on any surface and waits for the enemy to walk by it. If the enemy gets too close, it explodes and causes powerful splash damage, enough to easily kill the victim. It is also possible for the same person to be killed by his or her own Proximity Mine.

In the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series, the Proximity Mine is renamed to "Motion-Sensor Bomb" and it acts the same as it did in ''GoldenEye 007''. There is also a Proximity Mine in the game ''Perfect Dark'', and it acts the same exact way it does in ''GoldenEye 007'', but it has a different, more triangular design. The design of the Motion-Sensor Bomb in ''Super Smash Bros.'' and ''Melee'' resembles the design in ''GoldenEye 007''; however, the design in the Japanese version of ''Melee'' resembles the proximity mines from the original, Nintendo 64 version of ''Perfect Dark'' (the later Xbox Live Arcade release redesigned the mine extensively). The design of the Motion-Sensor Bombs in ''Brawl'' and ''Super Smash Bros. 4'' don't resemble either mine, and now have their own unique appearance. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsftegYjaiQ]
Since ''Brawl'', the design of the bomb has been consistent between regions. In addition, both ''Brawl'' and ''Smash 4'' gave the item a redesign, with ''Ultimate'' retaining the design of its predecessor. In ''Ultimate'', the Motion-Sensor Bomb triggers the game's [[Special Zoom|special slow-down zoom]] effect when someone touches it, regardless of if it will KO anyone. It gives off a signature beep during this slow-down, before exploding when speed returns to normal. Additionally, the bomb now becomes semi-transparent once planted, making it harder to see, especially on bright stages or stages with similar colour schemes.

The Motion-Sensor Bomb trophy has a different design between Japanese and international releases. In international releases the design from ''{{iw|wikipedia|GoldenEye 007|1997 video game}}'' is used while in Japanese releases the design is from ''{{iw|wikipedia|Perfect Dark}}''. The Japanese version lists the game of origin as "{{ja|パーフェクトダーク(N64)|Pāfekuto Dāku (N64)}}" (which is a transliteration of "Perfect Dark (N64)"), though if the language is set to English it will change to "Perfect Dark (5/00)". It also uses the PAL description when changed to English, which is missing the text ". It adheres to" after "the Carrington Institute" (changed to "spies and other stealthy operatives" in NTSC).

==Trivia==
==Trivia==
*The ''Melee'' trophy said its area of origin was secret, but the ''Brawl'' trophy verifies it originates in the ''Brawl'' universe. This is because in ''Melee'' the item was from ''Perfect Dark''/''Goldeneye 007'' (which are not Nintendo's IPs, the former belonging to Rare even after their contract with Nintendo has been terminated), while in ''Brawl'' and ''Smash 4'' it has new designs made specifically for the ''{{b|Super Smash Bros.|series}}'' series.
*Despite western versions of ''Melee'' stating the Proximity Mine's origin as "TOP SECRET", the game's credits still mention ''Perfect Dark''.
**Despite this, "Perfect Dark" can be seen in ''Melee''{{'}}s credits.
*"Motion-Sensor Bomb" is a word-for-word translation of the name given to the Proximity Mine in the Japanese release of ''GoldenEye 007''.

Super Smash Bros. instruction booklet description

The Motion-Sensor Bomb (センサー爆弾, Sensor Bomb) (named Motion Mine on the original Super Smash Bros. website[1]), also referred to as Proximity Mine in PAL and Japanese versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee, is an item seen throughout the entire Super Smash Bros. series that will attach itself to the nearest solid part of the stage when thrown, be it ground, wall, or ceiling. It will then stick there until something hits it, be it an attack, a character or an item. If touched, it will explode and deal out a great amount of damage and knockback.

Origin[edit]

The Proximity Mine as it appeared in GoldenEye 007.
The Proximity Mine as it appears in Perfect Dark.

In both GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, there is an item called the "Proximity Mine". The mines in each game have a different appearance but largely the same function: the player simply throws the mine on any surface and waits for the enemy to walk by it. If the enemy gets too close, it explodes and causes powerful splash damage, enough to easily kill the victim. It is also possible for the player to be killed by their own Proximity Mine.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Proximity Mine is renamed to "Motion-Sensor Bomb" and it acts the same as it did in GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. The design of the Motion-Sensor Bomb in Super Smash Bros. and international releases of Melee resembles the design in GoldenEye 007; meanwhile, the design in the Japanese version of Melee resembles the proximity mines from Perfect Dark.[2] The design of the Motion-Sensor Bombs in Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Ultimate don't resemble either mine, and now have their own unique appearance.

Overview[edit]

In SSB and Melee, when lying on the ground after spawning, it will be grey, but once thrown onto a wall or floor, it will glow green, as well as make its signature noise when it hits the ground, alerting others of its presence. In Brawl, the mine no longer glows; however, it gives a small beeping noise shortly after it has been deployed. It will also disappear if it takes too long to be set off. In SSB and Melee, the mine cannot explode before it is armed by a player. From Brawl onward, however, attacks and stage hazards will automatically cause an unarmed mine to explode, making them more dangerous in general.

In the North American and PAL versions of Melee, beta gameplay shows that the item was to look more similar to its appearance from Perfect Dark rather than GoldenEye 007. This was changed in the final versions for unknown reasons; even the Japanese language option in the North American version does not revert the item to the same appearance as in Perfect Dark and the Japanese version of Melee.

Since Brawl, the design of the bomb has been consistent between regions. In addition, both Brawl and Smash 4 gave the item a redesign, with Ultimate retaining the design of its predecessor. In Ultimate, the Motion-Sensor Bomb triggers the game's special slow-down zoom effect when someone touches it, regardless of if it will KO anyone. It gives off a signature beep during this slow-down, before exploding when speed returns to normal. Additionally, the bomb now becomes semi-transparent once planted, making it harder to see, especially on bright stages or stages with similar colour schemes.

Damage[edit]

Note, in Brawl the Motion-Sensor Bomb cannot be dropped while on the ground, pressing the drop input will make the character perform a forward tilt throw.

Trophies[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

The Motion-Sensor Bomb trophy has a different design between Japanese and international releases. In international releases the design from GoldenEye 007 is used while in Japanese releases the design is from Perfect Dark. The Japanese version lists the game of origin as "パーフェクトダーク(N64)" (which is a transliteration of "Perfect Dark (N64)"), though if the language is set to English it will change to "Perfect Dark (5/00)". It also uses the PAL description when changed to English, which is missing the text ". It adheres to" after "the Carrington Institute" (changed to "spies and other stealthy operatives" in NTSC).

PAL This little bomb might not look like much, but it's primed to explode when it detects movement, and it packs a serious punch! You can stick it on walls and ceilings, and it can be detonated by long-range attacks. With just a little bit of strategy, you can do a LOT of damage!
