—Introduction Tagline |
Rosalina & Luma (ロゼッタ&チコ, Rosetta & Chiko), known simply as Rosalina in the customization menu and the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS foldout, are a newcomer duo for Super Smash Bros. 4 consisting of Rosalina and a Luma. They were announced on December 18th, 2013 during a Nintendo Direct, which coincided with Rosalina's reveal in Mario Kart 8. Rosalina & Luma is the first newcomer announced after E3 2013, as well as a new Mario representative alongside Bowser Jr.. She is voiced by Kerri Kane.
Luma (チコ, Chiko) is a member of the star-shaped species of the same name that is under the care of Rosalina. It affectionately refers to her as its "mama". It works with Rosalina similarly to how Nana works with Popo, but is never controlled by the AI, even when separated from Rosalina. When it respawns after being KO'd, it can be replaced by a Luma of a different color, including yellow, blue, green, red, cream (resembling the character Luma who assists Mario in the two Super Mario Galaxy games), Polari (Rosalina's trusted advisor from the first game), and white (a unique color in Smash Bros.).
Attributes
Rosalina is a lightweight character despite her tall frame, similar to Mewtwo and Zelda. In fact, she is one of the lightest characters, with only Kirby, Mr. Game & Watch, and Jigglypuff being lighter. Unlike the Ice Climbers or Olimar, Rosalina is not completely handicapped when a Luma is incapacitated and has her own moveset independent from the Lumas. A Luma has its own attacks as well that it'll unleash when directional input is applied or automatically when close to an opponent as well.
- Creation of Lumas which aid in attacks similar to Nana of the Ice Climbers. Lumas can attack while either next to or projected away from Rosalina, using a moveset (detailed below) connected with Rosalina's moveset. Lumas can be used to combo opponents back and forth with Rosalina, and like Pikmin, can take attacks and be defeated.
- Luma will respawn next to Rosalina 13 seconds after it is KO'd or as soon as Rosalina respawns.
- Luma does not respond to inputs that involve using a held Item.
- Her air dodge, sidestepping, and rolling animations involve her disappearing and appearing in another place (except for her sidestep, in which she just disappears, but reappears on the same place).
- Rosalina can crawl.
Rosalina's design in the game is slightly more realistic than her appearance in the Mario universe, similar to Peach's. Her proportions are based upon her appearances in the Super Mario Galaxy series, and her light blue gown is as well, although with new star-shaped aesthetics.

- Rosalina & Luma (Alt.)
- Rosalina can pull in items and projectiles around her with her Gravitational Pull move. Her up special Launch Star is a diagonal jump and, though harmless, it has exceptional range. You also have some control over Rosalina's trajectory when she uses it.

Trivia
- Luma and Mega Man are the only characters in the game to have unique KO animations once having passed the blast-line. Luma's is smaller than other characters, and appears as a burst of colorful stars.
- In the Smash Bros. Direct released in April, the end sequence featured a little section for each character revealed up until that point. Rosalina & Luma's section is the only section to not feature new footage (it was instead taken from their reveal trailer).
- At E3 2014 and Smash-Fest, Rosalina & Luma was the only newcomer not available on both demo versions.
- Rosalina & Luma and Dark Pit are the only characters with a different victory theme that is not a remix of their universe's original victory theme.
