King Dedede (SSB4)

King Dedede is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was announced on January 10, 2014 to commemorate the release of Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan. Like most characters, he appears to have a more cartoonish appearance in Smash 4 than he did in Brawl, being more brightly colored and looking reminiscent of his appearance in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. He additionally has been shown to have even more exaggerated facial expressions. His model also appears to be sporting a graphical effect that accentuates the fuzz on his robes and crown.

Changes from Brawl

Dedede appears to have been slightly nerfed from Brawl. While his already strong offensive options have been strengthened, he can no longer perform chaingrabs, his air game has worsened and he can longer camp his opponents out. In addition, some of his moves have been changed entirely in terms of animation, similar to Bowser.

Attributes

  • Buff King Dedede is significantly heavier.
  • Buff King Dedede appears to jump higher.
  • Nerf His increased falling speed and slightly laggier aerials have worsened his excellent air game.
  • Nerf His accelerated falling speed appears to have been increased thus making him more susceptible to combos.

Ground attacks

  • Buff New concept of finishers on neutral infinites gives Dedede a much safer way to finish the attack.
  • Buff His foward tilt now hits multiple times with more damage and knockback.
  • Nerf Up tilt is weaker.
  • Buff Down tilt has more KO power.
  • Change Down tilt is now a roll that moves him forwards.

Aerial attacks

  • Nerf Forward aerial has slightly more ending lag.
  • Change Forward aerial is now a hammer swing from above, as opposed to from below.
  • Nerf King Dedede has lost his stellar back aerial, having it replaced with his old forward aerial facing backwards.
  • Buff Up aerial is stronger.
  • Buff Down aerial is now a single-hit meteor smash.
  • Nerf Down aerial is a bit slower.

Throws/other attacks

  • Nerf Global removal of chain grabs removes a very strong part of Dedede's arsenal.
  • Nerf Back throw deals 14% instead of 16%.
  • Buff Up throw has less ending lag, allowing up air followups at lower percentages.
  • Buff Down throw's new vertical trajectory gives King Dedede some new follow up options.
  • Nerf Down throw deals less damage.
  • Change Down throw is now similar in animation to Mario's down throw.

Special moves

  • Change Waddle Dee Toss now exclusively throws Gordos and is now known as Gordo Throw.
  • Buff Gordos now have horizontal knockback, and opponents take damage from the hammer swing done at the start of the move (whether it produces a new Gordo or not).
  • Buff Gordos can now be thrown in three unique trajectories.
  • Nerf Gordos are much weaker, bounce off opponents, and can be reflected by any attack that deals 2% damage or more.
  • Nerf Overall, Dedede can no longer camp his opponents using solely his minions, forcing him to approach.
  • Buff Super Dedede Jump can now bury grounded opponents.
  • Change Jet Hammer produces much more intense lighting that visually lights up the surrounding areas, and Dedede now visibly sweats with a grimacing facial expression when using the move. Jet Hammer also produces a wind effect, though it's just purely aesthetic.
  • Change His Final Smash has changed to Dedede Burst, a trapping Final Smash with good initial range.

Trophies

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions

King Dedede's regular trophy can be obtained by completing Classic Mode and his alternative trophy can be obtained by completing All-Star mode.

King Dedede
NA: He calls himself the King of Dream Land, but he doesn't have a lot of interest in ruling. He really loves to eat, so it's no surprise he's a heavyweight fighter. Despite his size and low speed, he can easily recover with his four jumps. His Jet Hammer will leave a mark on everyone he meets.
PAL: Being a self-proclaimed king, Dedede clearly doesn't care too much about the whole "politics" things. He's just a bit greedy. In this game, his weight and hefty hammer make him slow, but he can still jump four times in mid-air anyway, making it easy for him to get back to the stage. Fully charge his Jet Hammer for ultimate destruction.
King Dedede (Alt.)
NA: For the Gordo Throw side special, King Dedede sends a Gordo bouncing with a hammer strike. It bounces off walls—or sometimes gets stuck in them. After a while it'll disappear. If an enemy hits one, it'll bounce back toward you. Use the special again to whack it back at them!
PAL: For the Gordo Throw side special, King Dedede hits a Gordo with his hammer, sending it bouncing along the stage. It'll bounce off walls, or sometimes get stuck in them. Then, after a while, it'll disappear. If an enemy hits the Gordo with an attack, it'll fly back towards you. Use the special again to whack it back at them!
