Mushroom Kingdom U[1] (マリオUワールド, Mario U World) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It is based on the game New Super Mario Bros. U. The stage transitions between several worlds from that game.

Layout

The Acorn Plains section will consist of a medium-sized platform with three elevated platforms above it. There are also at least four sets of Stretch Blocks scattered around that can presumably be used as extra platforms. At unspecified points during a match, Kamek will show up and cast a spell in order to transform the stage into multiple variants based on the different worlds of New Super Mario Bros. U, though Sakurai stresses that it is "not what you would call a moving stage…"

Another variant is based on Rock-Candy Mines. It takes place on a single rock platform that balances like a lever.

A variant based on the Slide Lift Tower in Meringue Clouds-4 can also appear. In this variant, the main platform appears in a closed track, and is split into two halves. Occasionally, the platforms will rub against each other, pushing any fighter or item off the lower.

The final variant seen is based upon Meringue Clouds. It has pink clouds in the background, along with grassy platforms.

At points, a beanstalk will sprout from the background and grow leaves, which players can use as platforms. The beanstalk will disappear after some time. Droplets of water will occasionally fall onto the stage, which is followed by a giant icicle that freezes any player who touches it while it travels downward. After striking the ground, they serve as temporary platforms until broken. Water geysers will also spout upwards, acting as temporary extra platforms to stand on top of. Players who touch them will be lifted up. Some of these geysers will also carry Mega Urchins on top of them, serving as additional hazards.

Nabbit shows up periodically when the stage transforms. He is a stage hazard that chases after players and tries to catch them in his bag. He then attempts to blast off in a trail of smoke towards the upper blast line, much like the Beetle and Boss Galaga items. Nabbit is treated as a fighter, and therefore is vulnerable to attacks, grabs, and items. Like regular fighters, Nabbit can be knocked back further the more he has been damaged.

Origin

This stage is based on New Super Mario Bros. U, specifically its first world, Acorn Plains; its sixth world, Rock-Candy Mines; its seventh world, Meringue Clouds; and the various tower levels that appear in the first seven worlds. Water geysers are a major element in the world Sparkling Waters of New Super Mario Bros. U, and appear in the Rock Candy Mines section of the stage. Some water geysers have Mega Urchins floating on top of them, just like in the game. Icicles are a major element in the world Frosted Glacier; they randomly crash down on the stage acting as platforms before shattering.

Kamek debuted in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as Bowser's caretaker and personal servant, as well as the game's main antagonist. In that game, he kidnapped Baby Luigi after predicting that Mario and Luigi would cause Bowser trouble in the future. Throughout Yoshi's Island, he would assist bosses with his magic, usually by making them gigantic. Kamek would make more appearances in later games in the Yoshi and Mario series of games, serving as the series' main villain of the former. In his appearance in the New Super Mario Bros. series, he once again served Bowser and used his magic to assist the bosses.

Nabbit first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. U, where he would steal items from Toad Houses. Players could chase him across levels to retrieve the stolen items. Upon capturing him, players would be rewarded with a P-Acorn. Nabbit would also appear to take the prize in enemy courses if players waited too long to retrieve it. Nabbit reappeared as a playable character in the downloadable separate game New Super Luigi U. In the game, Nabbit was immune to damage from enemies (though he could still die from one-hit obstacles such as lava) so that less experienced players could deal with New Super Luigi U's harder difficulty. Nabbit would actually reprise his role from the original game if he was not being played as.
