Origin

Knuckles digging for a piece of the Master Emerald so he can swallow it. It's candy.

Here he comes, rougher than the rest of them, the best of them, tougher than leather. You can call him Knuckles, unlike Sonic he doesn't chuckle, he'd rather flex his muscles. He's hard as nails, it ain't hard to tell. He'll break 'em down weather they're solid or frail. Unlike the rest he's independent since his first breath, first test, feel the right, than the worst's left.

As a background character

Knuckles (left) on Green Hill Zone in Brawl.

Knuckles, like Tails and Silver the Hedgehog, appears running through the shuttle loop in the background of Green Hill Zone. Just like many other characters in the Sonic series, Knuckles appears as a Sticker that Sonic can use and a Trophy in the game. This is funny because Knuckles can't run to save his life.

As a background character

Nipples reappears as a background character in Green Hill Zone in the 3DS version.

As a costume

Two Mii Brawlers dressed as Knuckles.

Knuckles appeared as a downloadable Mii Brawler costume as part of the final wave on February 3, 2016.

As per his name, this great amplifies the presence of the Mii Fighters' nipples.

Trophy

Knuckles's trophy appears in both versions. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, it is part of the Sonic & Friends Trophy Box.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles the Echidna is the dedicated guardian of the Master Emerald, rarely leaving his post on the floating Angel Island. His serious, one-track-minded approach puts him at odds with his rival, Sonic, but the two somehow manage to be friends all the same. It's obvious it's not going to work and that one day they'll turn on each other and it will be very bad.

Knuckles as he appears in Ultimate.

Knuckles appears in Ultimate as an Assist Trophy. He attacks opponents with Homing Attack, and also digs into the ground and then uses an uppercut to attack. He may also simply punch opponents with his fists. He is also unable to be KO'd as he is literally god.

Like Shadow, all of Knuckles's voice clips in all languages are reused from Sonic Shuffle

As a background character

Knuckles also once again appears as a background element of Green Hill Zone. Because of this appearance, his Assist Trophy will not appear when playing on the stage. Or it will, I don't care.

As a costume

The Knuckles Mii Brawler costume from the previous game was not in the base game, but was rereleased as DLC on April 17th, 2019 because everything is locked behind a paywall these days.

Spirit

Knuckles also appears as a summonable primary Spirit. He can be summoned with the spirit cores of Muddy Mole (a character who digs through the ground and gets dirty like Knuckles) and Gordo (who is fat like hi,).

Trivia

• The picture of Knuckles with Sonic on Palutena's Temple on the Ultimate website is likely referencing the Sky Sanctuary from Sonic & Knuckles, of which Knuckles is often associated with. The Sky Sanctuary is also where Sonic saved Knuckles in Sonic Generations. One can observe a lack of yellow buildings.
• Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently the latest game where Travis Willingham voices Knuckles, as he was replaced by Dave Mitchell starting in 2019's Team Sonic Racing.
  • Willingham also provides the voice of another third-party Assist Trophy, Muscle Man.
