A non-playable character (or unplayable character) is a character that cannot be controlled by a player via any legitimate means. Most of the time, these characters are controlled by the game (e.g. enemies or bosses). A few of these characters are playable via the use of a GameShark or Action Replay but may cause glitches and/or freeze the game.
Giant Donkey Kong
An enlarged version of Donkey Kong, Giant Donkey Kong is fought on stage 6 of Super Smash Bros.' 1P Game. He is pitted against the player and two CPU allies.
In Melee and in subsequent games, with the introduction of the Super Mushroom, Giant DK is no longer strictly unplayable. Also, the randomized nature of Classic Mode can give the "giant" modifier to playable characters.
Metal Mario
A super-heavy fighter bearing an edited Mario series symbol. Metal Mario is a metallic version of Mario. He is fought on stage 9 of the 1P Game.
In Melee, Metal Mario reappears in stage 11 of Adventure Mode after defeating the Fighting Wire Frames and as a random opponent with other metal characters in stage 10 of Classic Mode as well as a trophy. Similar to Giant Donkey Kong, with the introduction of the Metal Box powerup in Melee, Metal Mario is no longer strictly unplayable. The randomized nature of Classic Mode can also give the "metal" modifier to playable characters.
Fighting Polygon Team
The Fighting Polygon Team is faced on stage 10 of the 1P Game, as well as in the Race to the Finish bonus game. The team is made up of polygonal models of the 12 playable characters, but are weak and lack specials.
Master Hand
Master Hand is the "boss" of the 1P Game. A giant hand, he has stamina that must be depleted to defeat him.
In Melee, Master Hand once again reappears as the boss of Classic Mode, sporting a revamped moveset but still relying on stamina. He also appears in Event Match 50. It is possible to play as him with the Master Hand glitch, but this was not intended, making him an unplayable character.
Master Hand reprises his final boss role in Brawl's Classic Mode. He also appears in the Subspace Emissary cut scenes, but is never battled in the gameplay.
In SSB4, Master Hand stars in both the Wii U and 3DS versions as the Classic Mode final boss.
Common enemies
SSBMs Adventure Mode includes a number of common enemies from various games, including Goombas, Octoroks and Topis.
Fighting Wire Frames
The spiritual successors to the Polygon Team, the Fighting Wire Frames come in male and female varieties. They appear in Adventure Mode, as well as the various forms of Multi-Man Melee.
Crazy Hand
Crazy Hand is a left-handed glove that pairs up with Master Hand to double-team players. He can be fought in Classic Mode if certain conditions are met, as well as in Event Match 50.
Crazy Hand reappears once again in Brawl's Classic Mode as the final boss fighting alongside Master Hand when the player reaches the final stage in 9 minutes or less with the difficulty set to Hard or above and without using a continue.
In SSB4's Classic Mode, Crazy Hand features as the final boss fighting alongside Master Hand only when the player reaches the final stage on intensity 3.0 or higher and takes the black path.
Giga Bowser
A huge, mutated version of Bowser, Giga Bowser is a hidden boss that appears in Adventure Mode if players beat the mode without using a continue. He also appears in Event Match 51.
In Brawl, Giga Bowser gains playable status as Bowser's Final Smash.
Sandbag
Sandbag appears in the Home-Run Contest as an object to beat up and send flying with the Home-Run Bat.
In Brawl, Sandbag once again returns in the Home-Run Contest. He also appears in the lobby of the Wi-Fi Multiplayer mode to "practice" on while the game is loading. It is also an item in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and drops other items when it is attacked.
Dark Link
Dark Link appears in Event Match 18, where he must be defeated twice by Link. The debug menu allows the "dark" modifier to be applied to any character.
In Brawl's Event Matches, Dark Link appears in Event 18: Dark Link Duel.
Giant Kirby
Giant Kirby is a gigantic version of Kirby. appears in the Green Greens stage only after beating the Kirby team in under 30 seconds.
Metal Luigi
Metal Luigi is a metallic version Luigi. He appears in stage 11 of Adventure Mode fighting alongside Metal Mario only when Luigi is unlocked and appears as a random opponent with other metal characters in stage 10 of Classic Mode.
Subspace Army
The Subspace Army is featured as the major antagonists of the Subspace Emissary mode. See the main article for more information on the soldiers of the army.
Petey Piranha
Petey Piranha appears as the first boss of the Subspace Emissary mode, being fought by Kirby. He has Peach and Zelda trapped within cages, and breaking the cages via damaging them is apparently the only method to defeat him.
Ridley
Ridley is another boss in the Subspace Emissary, fighting Pikachu and Samus.
In SSB4, Ridley reappears as a boss on the Pyrosphere stage, where, if damaged enough, he can join a fighter's side and be KO'd as a normal fighter.
Meta Ridley
Meta Ridley is a mechanized version of Ridley that attacks the Falcon Flyer and is fought by R.O.B., Diddy Kong, Captain Falcon, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Olimar and Samus.
In SSB4, Meta Ridley reappears as a boss on the Pyrosphere stage, where Ridley can transform into Meta Ridley.
Rayquaza
Rayquaza is another boss in the SSE, being fought by Fox and Diddy Kong.
In SSB4, Rayquaza reappears as a boss on the Kalos Pokémon League stage, where it retains its Brawl moveset.
Galleom
- Main article: Galleom
Galleom is a large robot that transforms into a tank, being fought by Marth, Ike, and Meta Knight in the first fight and by Lucas, and the Pokémon Trainer in the second fight.
Duon
Duon is a boss made from the Mr. Game & Watch clones being fought by Fox, Sheik/Zelda, Peach, Lucario, Snake and Falco.
False characters
False characters are clones of characters made of Shadow Bugs.
In Ultimate, they are known as puppet fighters and appear in World of Light as clones created by Galeem.
Fighting Alloy Team
The successor to the Fighting Wire Frame and Polygon teams. The Fighting Alloy Team comes in Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green varieties.
Tabuu
Tabuu is the final boss of The Subspace Emissary and the leader of the Subspace Army.
While the Mii Fighters are playable, the Fighting Mii Team acts like any other enemy team; not being able to use special attacks. Their outfits are also not normally wearable.
Master Core
Master Core appears as a secret boss in Classic Mode on intensity 5.1 or higher at the black path. When the hands take enough damage, Crazy Hand leaves the fight and Master Hand transforms into Master Core. It can take on many forms, such as Master Shadow, Master Edges, Master Beast, Master Giant, and Master Fortress.
Dark Emperor
The Dark Emperor appears as a boss on the Find Mii stage, where it can give fighters random status changes.
Metal Face
Metal Face appears as a boss on the Wii U version on the Gaur Plains stage at night.
Yellow Devil
The Yellow Devil appears as a boss on the Wily Castle stage, where, if defeated, ends in a large explosion damaging nearby players except the one who defeated it.

Characters in stage
As stage hazards
These characters are stage hazards, as they can interact with players or influence the stage, while being part of the stage.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, stage hazards can be turned on or off. If stage hazards are off, most of these characters do not appear, yet some still appear as background characters.

As background
These characters appear in the stage background and have no impact on the battle. If stage hazards are turned off, most of these characters still appear, but some do not as their stages no longer transform.
In addition, some stage hazard characters continue to appear when stage hazards are turned off, but they lose their ability to interact with the battle (at that point becoming background characters).
