—Super Smash Bros.'s instruction manual |
The Fire Flower (ファイアフラワー, Fire Flower) is an item in all Super Smash Bros. games. It acts as a short-ranged shooting item.
Origin
The Fire Flower made its first appearance in Super Mario Bros. When the item was acquired, Mario gained the ability to shoot fireballs at enemies as Fire Mario. Fire Flowers have appeared in numerous Mario games since and they usually function the same way. Contrary to its depiction in Super Smash Bros., however, the Fire Flower itself does not actually produce fire.
The design of the Fire Flower has changed within the Smash series, but they are all based on at least one type of Fire Flower from the Mario series. The design of the Fire Flowers in Super Smash Bros. comes from Super Mario Bros., the design in Melee resembles a daisy, which is the type of flower the Fire Flower is in Super Mario Bros., and the design in Brawl, SSB4, and Ultimate comes from the design used since New Super Mario Bros.
Operation
When holding a Fire Flower, hitting the attack button will make the flower start spewing fire in front of the character, and holding the attack button will lead to longer attack times. The flames can be shot for a combined seven seconds and inflict up to 44% damage altogether. While characters could not move while using the item in Melee, shooting items were later changed as to allowing running and jumping while shooting such items, including the Fire Flower. While the Flower can be thrown when it runs out of flames to fire, it cannot KO at any percentage, though it does inflict a burning hitbox. The Fire Flower's flames are considered to be both reflectable and absorbable.
In Melee, the Fire Flower can be used to cause the Ice Climbers on fire glitch. It causes the partner Climber to continuously release fire effects.
Damage
In Super Smash Bros. 4, damage dealt when thrown or dropped is dependent on distance. When dropped, items do more damage at greater heights as opposed to when thrown.

Trophy Info
In Melee
- Fire Flower
Once you grab this item, press and hold down the A Button to make the flower breathe flames until its power gives out. The Fire Flower is incredibly useful when you want to push someone off the edge of a stage. In Super Mario Bros., it transformed Mario into Fire Mario, changing his garb and enabling him to throw fireballs.
In Brawl
- Fire Flower
A flower that breathes flames when you press and hold the attack button. The flames don't last forever, though--after a while, the flower will lose its fiery power. You can also throw Fire Flowers at enemies to set them on fire for a brief moment. In Super Mario Bros., Fire Flowers were used to transform Mario into Fire Mario.

In SSB4
- Fire Flower
- This Fire Flower won't transform you like in the Mario series, but it will still let you unleash some fiery damage! Holding down the attack button lets you spew fire at your opponents, dealing constant damage to them. You can also throw it at them, but it just doesn't look as cool that way.
- Unfortunately, picking up this item won't get you a cool outfit like in the Mario series, but you can still use it to shoot fire, and that's what matters. It doesn't do much damage on its own, but fire it continuously and it'll all add up! If you get bored, just throw it at your opponent, but don't expect a massive explosion or anything.

Trivia
- Level 5 and above CPUs in the original Super Smash Bros. will never use the Fire Flower against Fox or Ness, as Fox can reflect the flames and Ness can absorb them. Instead, they will always throw the Fire Flower at them.
- In the Smash games, Mario and Luigi are both capable of throwing fireballs without the need of a Fire Flower.
