This page documents the update history of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018. Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, only the physical version of the game is possible to play on 1.0.0. To access this version today, delete any game data downloaded onto the system memory or an inserted Micro SD card. Then, turn off any internet connections and keep them off while the game is inserted and save data is on the system to avoid update notifications.

- Offline Gameplay
- Added a Hard difficulty to Adventure mode.
- Incorporated team colors for Spirit Battles and when fighting false characters in the final battle.
- Made it so that music played in a Spirit Battle preview will continue into the battle itself, instead of restarting when the battle begins.
- Removed the ability to set a player's damage to what is selected on the Training Mode menu by clicking on the player damage bar.
- The revival platforms now appear in the same location in Training Mode as in Versus Mode.
- Online Gameplay
- Online now includes Quickplay, Battle Arenas, Spectate, and Background Matchmaking.
- Global Smash Power will now be displayed.
- Note that the above requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Game Data Adjustments
- The ability to receive spirit event data has been added.
- The ability to receive presents has been added.
- The number of challenges has increased from 111 to 124, as it now includes a new page with the online challenges.
- DLC Content
- The special bonus for the Fighters Pass Vol. 1, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Rex's Mii Fighter costume (Swordfighter type), has been added.
- Misc
- Game balance adjustments.
- Various gameplay fixes.
- The feather present on Mr. Game & Watch's forward smash animation and the artwork for the Fire Attack spirit have been removed.

- Reversed the function of hide models when the camera gets too close to the fighters in camera mode. This was done mainly to avoid the error of showing Split models.

- Mode Guide now contains selections for Stage Builder and Shared Content. The Replays section now contains information on Edit Video.
- An additional question concerning Stage Builder has been added to the FAQ.
- There is now a button to view the Credits in the bottom-right corner of the Help menu. This version is different from the Classic Mode and World of Light credits; it simply scrolls the names in the center of a black screen while playing the Vault's theme, and has extra companies and names relating to downloadable content, such as Atlus. These credits can be fast-forwarded, reversed, and paused.
- The Techniques menu has been updated with two new sections for "Gun / Gun Special" and "Rebellion Gauge". They are the 80th and 81st options.
- Three new Smash Tag icons have been added, all concerning Joker: his Phantom Thief outfit, his Shujin school uniform, and the Persona series symbol, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts logo.
- Chrom now uses the Fire Emblem Awakening victory theme.
- The Announcer now properly calls out Stamina Mode if it is the set game mode.

- Kirby has been given a special Hero copy ability where he wears Erdwin's Coronet, Erdwin's Shield, and the Supreme Sword of Light. These are all items that are available in Dragon Quest XI. Kirby's usual neutral special is replaced with the Frizz move, which can be charged to Frizzle and Kafrizz. Kirby also gains the MP Gauge, which functions identically to Hero.
- The FS Meter can no longer be used 20 seconds after it is fully charged.
- How to Play now contains options to view the help screen for Online Tourney.
- The Techniques menu has been updated with two new sections for "Special Moves That Change When Charged" (Frizz, Zap, and Woosh) and "Command Selection". They are the 82nd and 83rd options.
- Five new Smash Tag icons have been added, all relating to Dragon Quest. The first four are the default skins of the Hero, and the last is their series symbol, Erdrick's symbol.
- The Koopalings and Alph now have their own pictures to go along with their bios.

- A pop-up will appear on the results screen when a fighter has been unlocked into, or kicked out of Elite Smash. Opponents can no longer be rematched and the game will return to the Quickplay menu.

- Adjustments to Arenas.
- There are two new Types of arena: "Elite Only", which has a bright yellow color, and "Beginners Only", which has a green color. Both of them are placed after "amiibo Battle". These two types are mutually exclusive; if you have access to "Elite Only", "Beginners Only" disappears and you can't enter any arenas of that type.
- In Arenas, rules can now be changed without closing the arena.
- A new option has been added for stage selection when creating an Arena, "Random Battlefield and Ω form". True to its name, it acts as a combination of the Random Battlefield and Random Ω Form settings.
- The Arena Log is now a much more substantial part of Arenas:
- The log takes up a larger area when not expanded, now touching the ring, allowing more messages to be seen.
- If a ruleset is changed or not changed, it is shown in the window.
- The Arena Log now counts the number of battles done in the Arena, as well as how many battles a player has won in a row.
- Several of the Arena Log's automated messages, such as "The battle has started", "The battle has ended", and "[playername] has racked up 10 KOs" have been changed.
- Messages sent by players appear in the log.
- Predefined messages can now be sent in the Arena. They are in a menu opened with the R button. 91 messages are included under the All section, which are divided between Greetings, Preparation, Before Battle, Thoughts, and Goodbyes sections. In addition to appearing in the Arena Log, messages will also appear above the token of the player who sends it.
- Button prompts are now shown in the Arena. This includes A when holding your token over the Waiting Area, Ring, or Spectator Stands, L to expand the Arena Log, and R to send a message.
- The Arena ID is now shown in the top right below the Player List button, in addition to being present on the Rules popup as before.

- Spring Man's friend icon had its background color changed from gray to chartreuse, matching the icons bundled with Min Min.
- Fixed several Sound Test-related oddities, most relating to victory quotes:
- Fox's victory quote against Falco ("Better luck next time, Falco!") is now listed.
- Wolf's victory quote against Fox ("Playtime's over, Star Fox!") is now listed.
- Lucina's victory quote against Ike ("And they call you the Radiant Hero?") is now listed.
- Palutena's victory quote against Pit ("Oh, so sorry about that, Pit.") is now listed.
- Simon's victory quote against dark-related characters ("To darkness!") is now listed.

- Stage
- The Small Battlefield stage has been added. Players can also set Small Battlefield as a Preferred rule in Online battles.
- Players can now select any stage-specific music for the Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.
- If a particular song is not selected, a random song from all music is chosen based on an average of the My Music settings for each individual stage.
- Players can no longer access the My Music interface for all four stages from the stage select in Smash Mode, Training, and Mob Smash.
- If a particular song is not selected, a random song from all music is chosen based on an average of the My Music settings for each individual stage.
- The "Random" option on the Stage Select screen has been split into individual icons for Random, Random Battlefield, and Random Omega.
- Random Custom Stages also has its own unique icon now as well.

- The online user experience has been adjusted.
- The tick rate of 1-on-1 battles not involving spectators has been increased from 30Hz to 60Hz, matching the in-game frame rate. This improves responsiveness, but decreases stability on low quality connections.[2]

- Kirby has been given a new copy ability where he becomes completely cuboidal. This appearance is reminiscent of the square Kirby model made by Hal Laboratory as an April Fool's prank in 2019. Kirby's usual neutral special is replaced with the mine ability on the ground and the create block ability while airborne. However, he does not gain the ability to craft at a table.
- The Techniques menu has been updated with six new sections for "Materials and Mining", "Material Gauge", "Craft", "Create Block", "Minecart", and "Elytra". They are the 97th, 98th, 99th, 100th, 101st, and 102nd options.
- Five new Smash Tag icons have been added, all relating to Steve: Steve, Alex, Zombie, Enderman, and his series symbol, a Block.
