He can jump higher than his brother, Mario. His Up Special, Super Jump Punch, will gain maximum damage and launching power when hitting the opponent right at the start. It truly is a "Special" move. He also uses his new Poltergust for his throw!

Luigi (ルイージ, Luigi) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was revealed along with the rest of the roster on June 12th, 2018. Like in games prior to Smash 4, he will reprise his role as an unlockable character instead of a starter character. Luigi is classified as fighter #09.

As in Smash 4, Charles Martinet's portrayal of Luigi from Brawl was repurposed for Ultimate.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from Smash 4, Luigi's model features a more subdued color scheme. His hair and clothing now features simple detailing, similar to his design in Brawl.
  • Change Like most of the returning roster, Luigi has become much more expressive than in the previous games.
  • Change Luigi has a new walking animation and a new sidestep animation. Luigi also has a new dashing animation akin to how he runs in Luigi's Mansion.
    • Change Luigi's backward jumping animations were slightly altered: he now performs one backflip instead of two; his backward midair jumping animation now has him flip less times.
  • Change Luigi's attacks that involve fire, such as his Fireball, have been given brighter, flashier particle effects.
  • Change Luigi's victory animation where he throws rapid punches was slightly altered, with a different animation for gasping.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, Luigi's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete (down from five).
  • Buff Luigi dashes faster. The general homogenization of initial dash speeds benefits him.
  • Buff Luigi has a slightly faster air speed.
  • Buff Luigi now has better traction.

Ground Attacks

  • Buff Neutral attack can be held for a consecutive jab.
  • Change Forward tilt has an altered animation, and is now a side kick.
    • Buff Forward tilt deals slightly more damage (8% → 9%) and has more base knockback.
  • Change Luigi has a new up tilt, a short uppercut, similar to the one he possessed in the original Super Smash Bros..
    • Buff Up tilt has more range below and above from Luigi, now being able to hit opponents on the lower platforms of Battlefield.
  • Buff Down tilt has significantly less endlag.
  • Buff Dash attack has been sped up.
  • Buff Down smash's front hitbox now sends opponents forward, which improves its edge-guarding potential.

Aerial Attacks

  • Buff All aerials have less landing lag (Neutral: frame 14 → 8, Forward: 22 → 13, Back: 16 → 10, Up: 12 → 7, Down: 20 → 12).
  • Change Luigi's head is slightly repositioned when using his neutral aerial.
  • Buff Up aerial no longer has a blindspot in front of Luigi. It also has slightly less ending lag and sends at a slightly higher angle, significantly improving it's combo potential.
  • Buff Down aerial now spikes grounded opponents.
  • Buff Luigi now has a grab aerial, effectively gaining an extra attack. However, unlike most grab aerials, it has considerable landing lag, it can also be used to edgeguard.

Throws/other attacks

  • Change Luigi now has a tether grab, using his new Poltergust G-00 from Luigi's Mansion 3 and shooting a plunger attached to a rope. Notably, the aerial variant cannot be used to recover.[1]
    • Buff Because of this, Luigi's grab range is much longer.
    • Change Unlike most tether grabs, Luigi can act without having to wait for his grab to retract.
    • Nerf However, his grab has noticeably increased startup lag and significantly higher end lag, making it more punishable if missing an opponent.
  • Change Due to the change to Luigi's grab animation, his throws were also changed accordingly.
    • Buff For Luigi's new forward throw, he slams opponents to the ground in a similar fashion to his down throw in Melee and Brawl. This increases its combo potential.
    • Buff For back throw, Luigi turns around and slams the opponents the other way. It is much faster than his old back throw.
    • Change Luigi's up throw now shoots the opponents into the air from the Poltergust.
  • Buff Down throw deals significantly less knockback at higher percentages, improving its combo ability.
    • Change Down throw now hits twice instead once, similar to Peach's.

Special Moves

  • Buff Fireball travels slightly faster, making it more likely to hit opponents. They also cover slightly more range.
  • Change Luigi's charging animation for Green Missile has been changed. He also now spins when Green Missile misfires.
    • Nerf Green Missile covers slightly less distance, making the move slightly worse in recovery.
  • Super Jump Punch:
    • Change Like several other powerful attacks in the game, Luigi's Super Jump Punch sweetspot triggers Special Zoom when it successfully hits an opponent.
    • Buff Super Jump Punch has significantly decreased landing lag.
    • Buff Super Jump Punch travels higher.
  • Luigi Cyclone
    • Change Luigi Cyclone now has a more opaque vortex form around Luigi when used.
    • Nerf Luigi Cyclone now has longer endlag and gains less height, hindering its usefulness in recovery, and is much less safe for gimping opponents off-stage. However, it can still be button-mashed after a double jump, retaining his cyclone ladder.
    • Buff Luigi Cyclone now has intangibility frames on startup.
    • Buff Luigi Cyclone deals more damage.
    • Change Luigi Cyclone now has a windbox that pulls the opponents into the move, this makes it easier for all the hits to connect, but makes it harder to gimp opponents off-stage.
  • Change While Luigi's Final Smash is the same as in Smash 4, he uses his new Poltergust from Luigi's Mansion 3, the Poltergust G-00. [2]

Trivia

  • In Simon's reveal trailer, Luigi was shown having his soul taken by Death, which led to humorous posts from the community claiming that Luigi had been officially "killed off". In turn, BBC News wrote a mock obituary for Luigi. Nintendo UK eventually responded with a short message of "Luigi is okay" as a nod to this event.
    • Luigi was not shown from the rest of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct (not counting menus and the like) of August 8th, 2018. Despite this, Mario and Mega Man were present in this Direct, even after what happened in Ridley's reveal trailer.
      • Luigi is also one of three characters to not appear in any in-battle footage in the Direct, the others being R.O.B. and the Mii Fighters.
  • Luigi's Mansion 3 was teased before it was officially announced through Simon's trailer, as Luigi can be seen using the new Poltergust from the aforementioned game.
  • Luigi's pose in the panoramic artwork for Ultimate is reminiscent of his pose in a group artwork for Melee.
  • Luigi is the first and only veteran in the series to have his standard grab be changed into a tether grab between installments.
  • Luigi's official artwork resembles his neutral jab.
