Battlefield (戦場, Battlefield) is a special stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee that is unlocked by clearing All-Star Mode on any difficulty, with any character. The field's main part is flat, just like Final Destination, but not as long. Three smaller platforms are suspended in a pyramid pattern above the main platform. Because of its simple layout, it is a tournament legal stage. It shares cosmetic similarities to Final Destination that the background is abstract and changes shape and color constantly.
Gravity is lowered significantly on this stage in the Adventure Mode fight on this stage against the Fighting Wire Frames.
In Classic Mode, a randomly selected metal character (it can be any character in the game except for Ganondorf, Mr. Game & Watch, or Roy) is fought on this stage during the tenth round. In Adventure Mode, the Fighting Wire Frames, Metal Mario, and Metal Luigi are fought on this stage in the eleventh stage of the adventure. In All-Star Mode, Mewtwo is always fought on this stage. Every Multi-Man Melee mode takes place on this stage. Lastly, in Classic Mode, the player may be able to fight Bowser on this stage before the metal fight; his possible allies in the team battle while being fought on this stage include Zelda, Mewtwo, Peach, and Mario.
Recovery on this stage is considered difficult for many characters due to the very thin edges on either end. If a player misses the edge with a vertically aimed up special move, they will end up underneath the stage, and suffer a possible KO. It is more difficult to sweet spot the edge using characters such as Marth and Fox on this stage compared to other similar stages. There is one exception to this: with Falco (and more difficultly with Fox), it is possible to platform cancel his Falco Phantasm (or Fox Illusion) move on one of the bottom platforms. Then, the player can choose to immediately phantasm to the next platform, which also platform cancels.
Battlefield is also infamous for its "glitchy" edges. It is said that, unlike other stages, if players attempt to sweet spot the ledge and hold toward the ledge as they do so, they may often miss the ledge when it clearly appears they should have been able to grab it. For example, it is possible for Peach to be floating within the edge grab range, but then not grab the edge and simply plummet after she stops floating. Also, there have been cases where "miracle ledge grabs" have been performed in cases where it did not appear as if the character should have survived.
Also, there is a technique that allows Captain Falcon to sweet-spot the ledge almost immediately after starting his Falcon Dive move, if he is in a specific area of the stage, somewhere between the ledge and the ceiling underneath. It is, however, extremely difficult to perform and thus is not considered practical in most situations. A demonstration and in-depth explanation can be seen in this video. A similar situation happens when Fox's Fire Fox or Falco's Fire Bird are aimed at a perfect 45 degree angle towards the ledge.

Battlefield
Super Smash Bros. Melee borrows settings from many different games to create its stages, but the Battlefield is an original creation. While its initial impression may strike some players as a bit ominous, the layout itself is fairly standard, lending it to serious, straightforward matches. Additionally, it's used to pit players against the Fighting Wire Frames.

Trivia
- When Battlefield is played on in Classic, Adventure, and All-Star Modes, as well as Event Matches Space Travelers and Mewtwo Strikes!, it has a circular swirling rainbow design in the background. This background does not appear when the stage is selected normally in Versus Mode, and is otherwise unavailable. With hacks, it is possible to use this background in Versus Mode.
- Unlike its counterparts on the other games, this Battlefield uses a series symbol that is exclusive to itself. However, it is still considered part of the Super Smash Bros. universe.
