Skill Super Smash Bros. Melee Top professional (retired)

Wobbles, previously known as Wobbles the Phoenix or Honorbound, is a retired smasher from Dallas, Texas who is known for playing the Ice Climbers and was considered the best in the world with them prior to his initial retirement. Wobbles was formerly ranked 1st on both the Central Texas Melee Power Rankings and the Arizona Melee Power Rankings and was 30th on the 2016 SSBMRank list.

He became known for his use of the "grab, pummel, forward tilt" infinite combo that effectively pushed him within the top 12 finalists in his debut major tournament NorCal Tournament. Wobbles' claim to fame also sparked a series of discussions concerning whether or not the Ice Climbers' forward tilt infinite should be banned in competitive play. The Smash Back Room decided that the infinite should go unbanned in tournaments. The technique has since been called wobbling.

Wobbles announced his retirement on January 20th, 2018. He will still be around in the community, but will no longer be competing in tournaments.[1]

Tournament history

Wobbles is well known for his performance at EVO 2013, where he defied all expectations and placed 2nd. He made it into the top 8 through winners' bracket by defeating Mango 2-1 in the winners' quarters pool, and then defeated Dr. PeePee 2-0 in winners' semis and Hungrybox 2-1 in winners' finals. However, in grand finals, he lost to Mango 0-3 and 1-3 in the first and second sets respectively. After this performance with a character once considered to be below the threshold for a high tier character, Wobbles retired from the competitive community like he announced before the tournament.

Wobbles has recently made a bit of a resurgence after being sponsored by a local provider in FX DFW. He regularly goes to the Monday Night Melee weeklies and DIME monthlies and consistently gets 1st nearly every time. He has also in this time gone to 2 major tournaments, Forte 2 and Apex 2015. At Forte 2, he placed 3rd of 200+ entrants, taking out notable players such as Axe and taking a game from Hungrybox in Winner's finals before being defeated by Hungrybox 1-3 and then later Axe 0-3 in loser's finals. At APEX, Wobbles placed 33rd of roughly 1,037 entrants, getting 1st seed in his R1 and R2 pools to make bracket, in doing so defeating players such as Qerb, s0ft and Blea Gelo. He then lost to S2J in round 1 of Winner's bracket 1-2, though he quit Game 3 prematurely after losing a stock rather viciously at the hands of S2J. He then forfeited his set with Cactuar in round 1 of loser's bracket to get 33rd overall.

Wobbles has also gone to several smaller tourneys, such as Infinity and Beyond! 18, where he placed 2nd, being able to take a set off of Mew2King 3-1 in Grand Finals but ultimately losing the second set 1-3. Another tourney he attended was Low Tier City 2, where he placed 3rd, losing to Mew2King 1-3 in Winner's finals and Westballz 0-3 in loser's finals. He also attended AZ tourney Smash the Target, where he again placed 3rd, defeating the likes of Squid and Tai, the latter coming off an upset over Westballz, both 2-1 before losing to Axe 2-3 in Winner's finals and Westballz again 1-3 in loser's finals. Finally, Wobbles recently attended the monthly DIME 13, which had Lucky in attendance. Wobbles was able to take 1st at the tournament despite the top level SoCal talent being in attendance. After defeating Mojo 3-2 last stock in Winner's semis, Wobbles lost to Lucky 2-3 last stock in Winner's finals, then proceeded to defeat Mojo 3-1 in loser's finals and take grand finals over Lucky 3-2 and 3-0 for each set, respectively.

Wobbles attended huge southwest tourney Aftershock in March 2015, where he placed a great 2nd place. After earning enough qualifiers points to automatically grant a Top 16 placing, he defeated top MDVA talent in Milkman and Redd to enter Winner's Semis, where he finally defeated Westballz for the first time. He then lost to Axe in Winner's Finals, then proceeded to narrowly beat Redd again in loser's finals 3-2 to reach Grand, where he lost the first set to Axe, netting 2nd place of roughly 150 entrants. Wobbles recently stated he will be attending Sandstorm, a huge Arizona tourney expected to have 5 of the Top 6 and many more top tier talents. At the tournament Wobbles got 9th place, losing to Armada in winner's and S2J in losers, both 2-0.

Wobbles then later entered EVO 2015, the largest Smash tournament of all time with 1800+ entrants. However, instead of using his main of Ice Climbers, he decided to use Mario instead. In doing so, he lost winner's finals of his Round 1 pool to mid tier SoCal player Trichael Man, but made it out in losers side. He eventually lost to Mooninite, who is best known for beating Crimson Blur with Kirby in losers to net 129th place. However, shortly after this tourney at Low Tier City 3, Wobbles proved why he was still one of the best players in the world by winning the tournament. Wobbles first defeats friend Axe 3-2 in Winner's Semis in a close set, but then proceeds to double eliminate Mew2King, defeating him in Winner's Finals and Grand Finals 3-1 each time, with a 3 stock on 3 different occasions, all on Peach, Ice Climbers' worst matchup.
