Andross (アンドルフ, Andorf) is the foremost villain in the Star Fox series. He appears as two separate trophies in Super Smash Bros. Melee and an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Origin

Andross, as he appears in Star Fox.

Andross was originally the lead scientist of the Cornerian Defense Force alongside General Pepper, both having an intense rivalry. Andross primarily focused on weapons for war, of which one experiment ended up destroying an entire city on Corneria. For this, Andross was banished to the desolate planet Venom. Years later, rumors popped up that Andross was becoming more active on Venom, so team Star Fox was sent to investigate. During this time, Andross hired Star Fox member Pigma Dengar to betray and sabotage the team. Pigma's betrayal resulted in the supposed death of James McCloud.

Several years after this incident, Andross began an invasion to conquer the Lylat System. The new Star Fox team, with assistance from the Cornerian Defense Force, would challenge Andross in a series of battles that would come to be known as the Lylat Wars. These event came to a head when Fox seemingly defeated Andross and saved the Lylat System.

However, Andross survived the attack, albeit as a spirit, and discovered the Krazoa Spirits. Andross learned that if all spirits were to be brought together, he could resurrect himself and continue his plans of conquest. He obtained one of the spirits by tricking Krystal into handing one over, then trapping her in a crystal to siphon her power for himself. Andross also tricked Fox into releasing all of the spirits so he could capture him and resurrect himself, but Fox defeated him, this time for good. After these events, Andrew Oikonny, Andross' nephew, attempted to continue Andross' ambitions, even flying a ship that could transform into a form similar to Andross'. This "Andross wanna-be", as Falco derides it, is easily defeated by the Star Fox team. During the battles against the Anglar forces, a holographic projection of Andross claiming to be his ghost guarded his biochemical weapons on Titania.

Star Fox Zero features a storyline similar to Star Fox 64, with Andross once again waging war against Corneria. Andross converts the entire planet of Venom into a teleportation device and uses it to kidnap General Pepper, who reveals to Fox that Andross developed the technology under the supervision of the Cornerian army. But when Andross grew mad with power, Pepper used the technology to banish Andross to another dimension, an effort in which James McCloud was instrumental. Andross appears similarly to his Star Fox 64 incarnation, but when confronted inside the protected structure he erects, he is covered with metallic armor, similar to his polygonal Star Fox form.

The mechanical incarnation of Andross, the basis for his Assist Trophy appearance, first appeared in Star Fox, which used filled 3D polygons to render objects, items, and bosses in the game, including himself. His main method of attack, as in Star Fox, is to inhale and spit out polygonal, metallic tiles at the player.

Trophies

Andross makes two separate appearances as trophies:

Star Fox's archenemy. Whether it's a metallic manifestation of Andross or just a hologram is unknown, but from its outward appearance, it's safe to assume that it's not the fiend's true form. Andross occasionally sucks matter in and then violently exhales, sending out a cloud of metal tiles. Its eyes are its weak points.

This incarnation of Andross was so big as to be ridiculous, but it at least appeared to be a living being. Andross was once a brilliant scientist, but was banished from the galaxy for his dangerous experiments. From the planet Venom, he readied his troops and directed his sword of vengeance toward the Lylat System.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the original SNES version of Andross appears as an Assist Trophy, and thus as a collectible trophy.

As an Assist Trophy

Andross in Brawl

When Andross appears out of an Assist Trophy capsule, he floats up off the screen and flies towards the back of the stage and spits polygon panels out of his mouth. Characters hit by the panels will take around 12% damage, while the tiles go right through the one who summoned him. Andross permanently appears during the event match Shadow of Andross, making it more difficult for the human players as Fox and Falco to KO Wolf.

Andross

A brilliant scientist formerly employed by the Cornerian Army. He took his research too far, and the disastrous results labeled him a Level 1 offender, resulting in his banishment to the nearby planet Venom. After building a base and declaring himself emperor, he swore he would rule the Lylat system. Thanks to Team Star Fox's heroism, the madman has yet to achieve this.

In Super Smash Bros. 4

As an Assist Trophy

Andross attacking Mario and Pit

Andross returns as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. 4, keeping his Brawl behavior.

However, one slight change was made to Andross when being summoned. Unlike Brawl, where Andross lands in parts of the background that match the part of the stage where the player summoned him, now he always goes to the center of the background, regardless of where he was released.

Trophies Descriptions

Andross

Pal The true final boss of Lylat Wars is a form where Andross has turned himself into a bioweapon. His face and hands explode, revealing a giant brain with eyes that move independently like tentacles and fire laser beams. When he's beaten in this form, he self-destructs and tries to take Fox with him.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

As an Assist Trophy

Andross continues his panel-spitting routine in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is also one of the few Assist Trophies unable to be defeated. Training Mode describes his Assist Trophy: Moves into the background, then fires polygon panels at the stage. Can't be KO'd.

Andross cannot be summoned on the following stages: 3D Land, 75m, Boxing Ring, Castle Siege, Corneria, Delfino Plaza, Dream Land GB, Duck Hunt, Flat Zone X, Frigate Orpheon, Gamer, Garden of Hope, Golden Plains, Halberd, Hyrule Castle, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Circuit, Midgar, Mishima Dojo, Mushroom Kingdom U, Mushroomy Kingdom, Mute City, Pac-Land, Paper Mario, Peach's Castle, Pokémon Stadium 2, Prism Tower, Shadow Moses Island, Skyloft, Spirit Train, Super Mario Maker, Temple, The Great Cave Offensive, Tomodachi Life, Tortimer Island, Umbra Clock Tower, Unova Pokémon League, WarioWare, Inc., Wii Fit Studio, Wrecking Crew, or Wuhu Island.

Spirit

Andross also appears as three different primary spirits.

Andross's spirit can only be summoned with the cores of Porygon and Commander.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Andross's Star Fox 64 3D version is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. After Galeem's defeat, Dharkon takes control of Galeem's spirits, including Andross. Andross (Star Fox 64 3D)'s spirit is located in the Mysterious Dimension sub-dungeon of The Dark Realm. Prior to his battle, the player is quizzed on which spirit was a scientist.

Andross (Star Fox 64 3D) uses a Ganondorf puppet fighter and is fought on the Venom stage. During the battle, Andross appears as a hostile Assist Trophy and the gravity is reduced, referencing how Andross is a floating apparition.

Andross (True Form) can be obtained by enhancing the Andross (Star Fox 64 3D) spirit at level 99.

Trivia

  • Andross, Nintendog, and Zero are tied for having the most spirits for an Assist Trophy with 3 each. In his case, his polygon spirit, his Star Fox 64 3D spirit, and his true form spirit.
  • In Brawl and SSB4, when Andross is summoned on stages with certain large objects placed in the background, Andross can barely be seen, with only uncovered parts of Andross' face being noticable. In Ultimate, Andross' model is transparent when facing directly behind background objects.
