Smashville (すま村, Suma-mura, Smash Village) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and forwiiu based on the Animal Crossing franchise. Players battle on a platform with a moving horizontal jump-through platform suspended above an Animal Crossing town while spectators watch on.
Smashville (すま村, Smash Village) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, forwiiu and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate based on the Animal Crossing franchise. Players battle on a platform with a moving horizontal jump-through platform suspended above an Animal Crossing town while spectators watch on. Villager is fought here for his unlocking battle in Ultimate.

Stage Description
Stage overview
The stage's scenery changes from night to day depending on the Wii's internal clock. If the stage is selected during the day, if either Blathers or Celeste (both owls) are present in the background, they will be asleep and not pay attention to the match. It also appears that some of the residents watching the match may react to the fighters, such as the character they are smiling at is KO'd, they will occasionally stare maliciously at the player who caused the KO. The most notable of these villagers though, is certainly Dr. Shrunk.
Smashville's only dynamic element is a floating soft platform that moves from side to side over the stage.

The stage goes along with Wii's built-in clock. At night, it gets darker save for a few lights. Also, on Saturdays 8.00 PM-12.00 AM, K.K. Slider will perform one of six different songs.
The stage is home to numerous background characters from the Animal Crossing series and features a day-night cycle that runs according to the console's internal clock. On Saturday evenings, the stage that K.K. Slider performs on will be set up at 7:30 PM and he will perform his concert from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM Sunday. Other background characters spectate the fight (see #Background characters), reacting to KOs and visibly favoring one fighter or another.

Also, small, red balloons sometimes float overhead, usually holding food if the respective item is on; if food is turned off, no items will appear with the balloons. (They will still appear if Food is on and Item Frequency is set to none.) The balloons can be popped with one hit.
Small, red balloons sometimes float overhead, carrying food items if they are enabled (even if the overall item frequency is set to "none"). The balloons can be popped with one hit. Moves that change once hitting a hurtbox will interact with the balloons, such as Bouncing Fish.

Tournament Legality
Ω forms and Battlefield form
This stage is a starter in tournaments because of its simple layout and no stage hazards. It is one of the three stages legal in Japan; the others are Battlefield and Final Destination.
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the moving platform, background characters and balloons do not appear in the Ω form. Additionally, the stage is increased in length somewhat to match that of Final Destination.

Background Characters
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form and Battlefield form are similar to SSB4s Ω form; however, the main platform is resized and reshaped to match Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. The three soft platforms of the Battlefield form are based on the soft platform of the normal form.

Hazards Off
With hazards off in Ultimate, balloons no longer appear and the moving platform stays in the middle above the primary platform. Oddly, the platform does not start in this position, and moves from the right to the middle at the start of each battle.

How to Unlock in forwiiu
The characters that appear on the stage come in 25 configurations. The 25 configurations are split into groups of 5 for each of the 5 divisions of the day.
Smashville can be unlocked in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U by completing the solo event Playing Tricks.

In 2001, a Japanese Nintendo 64 game called nookipedia was released, which is the first game in the Animal Crossing franchise. Animal Forest was translated, and ported to the GameCube as Animal Crossing (also known as Animal Crossing: Population Growing) with some added features, such as the Able Sisters building and the Museum. As Animal Forest is the first Animal Crossing game, the GameCube version is a remake of the same game.

Origin
nookipedia games predominantly take place in a small town, characterized by features such as nookipedias, nookipedias, nookipedias, a nookipedia with nookipedia, and a nookipedia, which are all present in the background of the stage. The game series' town structures serve as the basis for the town in the background of this stage:

Each Animal Crossing game is mostly set in a small town. A typical town can be seen in the background of this stage. Here are all the buildings that appear in the background:

Ironically, despite Tom Nook's stores being one of the most important buildings in the Animal Crossing universe, not one version can be seen in this stage.
This stage draws heavily from Wild World; however, there are some notable exceptions to this, such as the absence of Tom Nook's store, a central building in the Animal Crossing series. Additionally, the Town Gate, which appears in Wild World, is not featured in this stage. The backdrop includes various elements like Kapp'n's taxi, Gulliver's flying saucer, and Pete, the mailman, flying across the sky. At night, players can see constellations in the sky, which resemble those found in the museum's observatory and are designed by players.

In the Animal Crossing series, players occasionally see nookipedias floating over their town, carrying a nookipedia. Starting from Wild World, players can use a slingshot to pop the balloon; however, in the original Animal Crossing game, players must wait for the balloon to land on a tree and then shake it. In this stage, balloons pop when attacked and, when items are enabled, contain food.

K.K. Slider is a dog musician in Animal Crossing who performs every Saturday at 8:00 PM. Players can request a song or ask him to play a random song. In this stage, K.K. Slider can be heard playing one of his songs if the player plays from 8:00 p.m. to midnight on a Saturday. The songs he performs on this stage are the same ones found in the Animal Crossing games.

In the beginning of Wild World a turtle named nookipedia drives the player to the town in a taxi. This taxi can be seen driving across town to the town hall. The town itself in Smash retains almost everything that can be seen in a town in the Animal Crossing series such as trees, rocks, flowers, a river, bridges, a waterfall (however, this can only be seen with the use of a hacked camera, or by the Demon moving the camera), etc. In Wild World, in the museum there is an observatory. A player can go in the observatory and talk to an owl named nookipedia who lets the player either stargaze or make constellations. The player could make a constellation however he or she wants it to look like. The constellations can also be seen outside for everybody to see. In this stage, the night sky features some constellations.
The stage underwent a visual redesign in Ultimate, taking inspiration from other Animal Crossing games, such as curved bridges from nookipedia along with wispy and transparent clouds from nookipedia. Additionally, there are minor changes, such as the repositioning of certain objects and the inclusion of new types of flowers and fruit trees.

clr
In Animal Crossing there are balloons that float over town carrying a present. The player must wait and see if the balloon will get caught in a tree. If the balloon does get caught in a tree, the player can shake the tree which makes the present fall down. In Animal Crossing: Wild World there are still balloons that float over the town, but now the player has a chance to buy a slingshot to pop the balloons and have the present fall. It seems the balloons that carry food in this stage is more of a reference to the balloons in Wild World due to the player being able to pop the balloon. In Wild World an Gulliver, a seagull astronaut flies through the town in a flying saucer. He can also be shot down with the use of the slingshot. In the background of this stage Gulliver can occasionally be seen flying his ship across the town. In both Animal Crossing and Wild World there is a Pelican named Pete who delivers the mail across town. Pete can be seen flying across the town in the background of this stage.

There are numerous characters seen in the background of the main platform, all which have appeared in Wild World (while some originate in Animal Crossing). In Animal Crossing there is a dog named K.K. Slider (also known as Totakeke). He is a musician who appears at the train station every Saturday at 8:00 PM. If the player talks to K.K. Slider, the player can either request a song or ask him to play a random song. In Smash, if the player plays on this stage from 8:00 PM onwards on a Saturday, K.K. Slider can be seen and heard playing one of his songs. In the Animal Crossing games, K.K. Slider will only be performing until 9:00 PM, but in Smash, he will play until midnight. The songs that K.K. Slider plays on this stage are real songs that he plays in the Animal Crossing games. In Wild World a pigeon named Brewster owns a café named The Roost. Both Brewster and a portable version of The Roost cafe can occasionally be seen. In Animal Crossing there is a giraffe named Gracie, who is a celebrity fashion designer who appears occasionally in a town. She also owns a red convertible car. In Wild World she owns a yellow car that has a roof. In this stage, Gracie can be seen watching the fight or driving her yellow car.
Tournament legality
In Brawl this stage is a starter in tournaments because of its simple layout and lack of stage hazards. It is one of the three Brawl stages legal in Japan; the others are Battlefield and Final Destination.

Trivia
The 2017 recommended ruleset for SSB4 also lists this stage as a starter in tournaments, for the same reasons as in Brawl.
*Other than Battlefield and Final Destination, Smashville is the only stage to have an original name. The name "Smashville" takes advantage of the fact that in the Animal Crossing series players can name their own town, so it is named after the name of the game.

**Incidentally, it is impossible to name a town "Smashville" in any Animal Crossing game, as "Smashville" is ten letters long, and the maximum number of characters allowed is eight.
Most rulesets for Ultimate keep the stage as a starter, as it still lacks any dangerous stage hazards. However, it should be noted that due to disabling stage hazards also disabling the platform moving, gameplay on Smashville is different than in previous games.
**The Japanese name of the stage, すま村 (Sumamura), is a pun on スマブラ (Sumabura), a Japanese abbreviation of "Smash Bros.".

*If the player watches Kapp'n's taxi, after stopping at the town hall, it drives into a tree. It stays there for a few seconds before restarting the cycle.
Update history
*The Town Hall clock shows the actual time from the the console's internal clock.

*In Ultimate, this is one of the few stages where every Assist Trophy can appear.
*There are several errors in the for Wii U and Ultimate iterations of this stage compared to the Brawl iteration:
**In for Wii U and Ultimate, Villagers in position 4 don't appear when "The Roost" is present when only positions 5 and 6 should be affected.
**In for Wii U and Ultimate, Villager's looking direction will randomly reset to pointing forward instead of towards a fighter for a frame or two.
**In Brawl, the villagers use a "happiness/contentment" expression when walking in place while in for Wii U and Ultimate they use a "surprise/amazement" expression.
***This is possibly an wikipedia as in the files the former has an index of 5 while the latter has an index of 6.

Smashville (すま村, Smash Village) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate based on the Animal Crossing franchise. Players battle on a platform with a moving horizontal jump-through platform suspended above an Animal Crossing town while spectators watch on. Villager is fought here for his unlocking battle in Ultimate.

Stage overview[edit]

Smashville's only dynamic element is a floating soft platform that moves from side to side over the stage.

Small, red balloons sometimes float overhead, carrying food items if they are enabled (even if the overall item frequency is set to "none"). The balloons can be popped with one hit. Moves that change once hitting a hurtbox will interact with the balloons, such as Bouncing Fish.

Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the moving platform, background characters and balloons do not appear in the Ω form. Additionally, the stage is increased in length somewhat to match that of Final Destination.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form and Battlefield form are similar to SSB4's Ω form; however, the main platform is resized and reshaped to match Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. The three soft platforms of the Battlefield form are based on the soft platform of the normal form.

Hazards Off[edit]

With hazards off in Ultimate, balloons no longer appear and the moving platform stays in the middle above the primary platform. Oddly, the platform does not start in this position, and moves from the right to the middle at the start of each battle.

Background characters[edit]

The following characters appear in the background of Smashville:

The characters that appear on the stage come in 25 configurations. The 25 configurations are split into groups of 5 for each of the 5 divisions of the day.

The positions characters will appear at given the position number (The Roost positions not included).

Notes for the following table:

 • Unless otherwise noted, a listed character appears in every Smash game
 • A dash indicates no character
 • Characters in position 5 and 6 will sit at The Roost if it appears

Origin[edit]

A Town in Wild World.

Animal Crossing games predominantly take place in a small town, characterized by features such as trees, rocks, flowers, a river with bridges, and a waterfall, which are all present in the background of the stage. The game series' town structures serve as the basis for the town in the background of this stage:

Building Origin Game Purpose
Able Sisters Animal Crossing A clothing and tailoring shop, where the player can design their own clothing and umbrellas.
Animal Villager Houses Doubutsu no Mori (design from Animal Crossing: Wild World) The residences of the non-playable villager characters.
Museum Animal Crossing An initially-empty museum, which can be filled by the player by donating bugs, fish, fossils, and works of art. It also includes an observatory, where constellations can be designed, and The Roost, a coffee shop.
Player's House Doubutsu no Mori (design from Wild World) The player's residence, which can be expanded and decorated with wallpaper, carpeting, and furniture.
Town Hall Animal Crossing: Wild World The main building for the town's civic duties; the player can pay their debt to Tom Nook, deposit and withdraw money, mail letters, dispose of unwanted items, etc.

In the Animal Crossing series, players occasionally see balloons floating over their town, carrying a present.

The stage underwent a visual redesign in Ultimate, taking inspiration from other Animal Crossing games, such as curved bridges from Animal Crossing: City Folk along with wispy and transparent clouds from Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Additionally, there are minor changes, such as the repositioning of certain objects and the inclusion of new types of flowers and fruit trees.

Tournament legality[edit]

In Brawl this stage is a starter in tournaments because of its simple layout and lack of stage hazards. It is one of the three Brawl stages legal in Japan; the others are Battlefield and Final Destination.

The 2017 recommended ruleset for SSB4 also lists this stage as a starter in tournaments, for the same reasons as in Brawl.

Most rulesets for Ultimate keep the stage as a starter, as it still lacks any dangerous stage hazards. However, it should be noted that due to disabling stage hazards also disabling the platform moving, gameplay on Smashville is different than in previous games.

Update history[edit]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 1.0.2

 • Change Added 8-player mode version of the stage and its Ω form. For performance reasons, background characters no longer appear while in this mode.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.1.0

 • Change Smashville's revival platforms locations have been changed.
