The Arwing (アーウィン, Arwing) is the brand of one-man spaceship used by the eponymous combat team in the Star Fox series, and is featured in every Star Fox game. As such, it has made appearances in all of the Smash Bros. games.
Origin[edit]
Arwings appear as a staple feature throughout the entire Star Fox franchise. Developed by Space Dynamics Co., the Arwing comes with revolutionary features such as the G-Diffuser technology for antigravity, as well as the ability to put up a brief electromagnetic shield by performing a barrel roll. Aside from the Landmaster, the Arwing is Fox and co.'s primary mode of transportation throughout their battles, and remains roughly the same in every installment. In Star Fox Command, however, every Star Fox team pilot had their own models of Arwing, with some members piloting classic Arwing models and others piloting customized versions.
In Super Smash Bros.[edit]
Arwings make several appearances in this game. Several of the ships can be briefly seen in the game's opening movie. Fox's on-screen appearance is of him jumping out of an Arwing.
Arwings also appear as stage elements/obstacles in the Sector Z stage. They appear occasionally to fly around and shoot their laser beams. Any character that makes contact with the lasers take a decent amount of damage. The Arwings do not always shoot, but sometimes just fly over the stage instead. Characters can jump on the Arwing while it is flying over the Great Fox. If the Arwing flies off the screen, then that character that was on the Arwing will receive a Star KO. The Arwings do not specifically target anyone when they fire their lasers, instead going by their own patterns. 2D Arwing sprites can also be seen in the distance of the stage.
Compared to their original size in Star Fox 64, the Arwings have been scaled down, as Fox appears to be too big to fit inside the cockpit.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
Arwings return with slightly more representation. In addition to being again sighted in the game's opening FMV, Arwings also appear in the Corneria and Venom stages, serving the same general functionality as they did in the previous game: being a soft platform, and shooting at the stage and characters.
The scale appears to be the same, but while Fox and Falco are still too big too fit in the Arwing, this time it appears to be too big to fit in the Great Fox's docking bay.
Trophy[edit]
The Arwing features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the trophies that can be collected randomly in the Trophy Lottery.
- Arwing
- The Arwing is the symbol of Star Fox. Like an F-Zero racer, it's equipped with an opposing-gravity device. It can barrel roll and flip with ease thanks to its quick acceleration and flexible control. In battle, the ship uses retractable wings for precise flying. Every Arwing has smart bombs as its sub-weapons.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Arwings return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, based on the design of Arwings in Star Fox 64. They are once again the on-screen appearance for Fox, and now also for Falco.
Just like in the last two Super Smash Bros. games, Arwings appear as stage elements and hazards, in both the game's Star Fox stages: They are new in the Lylat Cruise, but return in the returning Melee stage Corneria.
In the Subspace Emissary[edit]
Fox and Falco are both seen piloting Arwings at various points, Fox piloting two and Falco one.
- Fox's original Arwing was knocked out of the air by the Halberd's Combo Cannon. After it crashed, Rayquaza emerged from the lake and attacked it, destroying it. Fox ejected to help Diddy Kong fight Rayquaza.
- Fox's second Arwing was also used to engage the Battleship Halberd along with Falco. However, after destroying the Combo Cannon, Peach was blown back. Assuming that Fox was trying to attack Peach, Zelda (in her Sheik disguise) leapt from the bridge of the Halberd and punched the cockpit. This forced Fox to eject and abandon his Arwing, which presumably crashed.
- Falco's Arwing arrived in time to save Fox from Bowser. Ejecting, Falco kicked the Dark Cannon up and shot it to pieces. Later, Falco piloted the same Arwing on an attack on the Halberd. Falco also used his Arwing to help Diddy Kong reach the skiff where Donkey Kong was being held. He dropped him off and returned to fight the Halberd. After seeing Duon created from Shadow Bugs, Falco ejected and skydived to the others' aid. Finally, Falco's Arwing engaged the Subspace Gunship along with Samus', Olimar's and Captain Falcon's ships. It was one of the first to go into Subspace along with Captain Falcon. What happened to it after that is unknown.
Trophy[edit]
The Arwing is a random, collectible trophy.

In Super Smash Bros. 4[edit]
Arwings return in these games once again. Fox appears piloting one in the games' first trailer from E3 2013, and the ship serves once again as his on-screen appearance. Arwings appear on the Orbital Gate Assault stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
Trophies[edit]
Arwing has two trophies, one exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and one from Star Fox: Assault exclusive to for Wii U.
- Arwing
- The pride and joy of the Star Fox team—it gets its name from the distinct "A" shape. The adjustable wings give this ship remarkable mobility in all kinds of situations; considering all the dangerous places the Star Fox team goes, you never know when a well-timed barrel roll will save the day.
- These fighter crafts are the pride and joy of the Star Fox team. Their name derives from their shape, which is like the letter A, and their wings, which can open and close, giving them impressive mobility in all kinds of situations. There's no Mr Arwing out there that they're named after! So don't expect him to turn up in a Star Fox game.
- Arwing (Assault)
- Star Fox's fighter crafts have the ability to regulate gravity, allowing them to adapt to all kinds of space environments, and have been tuned up to give them superb offensive performance. Mass-produced Arwings appear in Star Fox: Assault, but many get taken over by the invaders, forcing the Star Fox team to shoot them down.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Arwings return in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, this time as part of Fox and Falco's Final Smashes, replacing the Landmaster from previous games. Wolf's Landmaster is replaced by his equivalent aircraft, the Wolfen. In the Final Smash, instead of freely controlling the vehicle in question, it now acts as a trapping Final Smash with a cinematic cutscene playing if the opponent gets trapped.
