The '''Fire Flower''' ({{ja|ファイアフラワー|Faia Furawā}}, ''Fire Flower'') is an item in all ''{{b|Super Smash Bros.|series}}'' games. It acts as a short-ranged shooting item.

The Fire Flower made its first appearance in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' When the item was acquired, Mario gained the ability to shoot fireballs at enemies as {{s|mariowiki|Fire Mario}}. Fire Flowers have appeared in numerous {{uv|Mario}} games since and they usually function the same way. Contrary to its depiction in ''Super Smash Bros.'', however, the Fire Flower itself does not actually produce fire.
The Fire Flower made its debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' They pop out of ? Blocks when Mario or Luigi are in their Super states. Once obtained, they become Fire Mario / Luigi and can toss fireballs, projectiles that are fired diagonally downwards and bounce off the ground. Fireballs are very efficient at clearing out enemies quickly, being the only way to defeat underwater enemies and providing an easier time during Bowser fights.

The design of the Fire Flower has changed within the ''Smash'' series, but they are all based on at least one type of Fire Flower from the ''Mario'' series. The design of the Fire Flowers in ''Super Smash Bros.'' comes from ''Super Mario Bros.'', the design in ''Melee'' resembles a {{s|wikipedia|daisy}}, which is the type of flower the Fire Flower is in ''Super Mario Bros.'', and the design in ''Brawl'', ''SSB4'', and ''Ultimate'' comes from the design used since ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros.}}''

When holding a Fire Flower, hitting the attack button will make the flower start spewing fire in front of the character, and holding the attack button will lead to longer attack times. The flames can be shot for a combined seven seconds and inflict up to 44% damage altogether. While characters could not move while using the item in ''Melee'', shooting items were later changed as to allowing running and jumping while shooting such items, including the Fire Flower. While the Flower can be thrown when it runs out of flames to fire, it cannot KO at any percentage, though it does inflict a burning hitbox. The Fire Flower's flames are considered to be both [[reflection|reflectable]] and [[absorption|absorbable]].

The Fire Flower (ファイアフラワー, Fire Flower) is an item from the Mario series.

Origin[edit]

A Fire Flower as it originally appeared in Super Mario Bros.

The Fire Flower made its debut in Super Mario Bros. They pop out of ? Blocks when Mario or Luigi are in their Super states. Once obtained, they become Fire Mario / Luigi and can toss fireballs, projectiles that are fired diagonally downwards and bounce off the ground. Fireballs are very efficient at clearing out enemies quickly, being the only way to defeat underwater enemies and providing an easier time during Bowser fights.

The Fire Flower has underwent a lot of visual changes within the Super Smash Bros. series. In Super Smash Bros., the Fire Flower's design is based on the design from Super Mario Bros. In Melee, it has an unique design modeled after a daisy. From Brawl onwards, the Fire Flower's design is based on the design from New Super Mario Bros., which became its standardized look. In Ultimate, the fire looks more cartoony than in previous games.

Overview[edit]

Fire Flower's artwork from Super Smash Bros.

As an item[edit]

The Fire Flower debuted as a shooting item in Super Smash Bros.

While holding down the attack button, the Fire Flower spits a stream of fire. Holding the attack button will lead to longer attack times. The flames can be shot for a combined seven seconds and inflict up to 44% damage altogether. While characters could not move while using the item in the first two games, shooting items were later changed in Brawl as to allowing running and jumping while shooting such items, including the Fire Flower. While the flower can be thrown when it runs out of flames to fire, it cannot KO at any percentage, though it does inflict a burning hitbox. The Fire Flower's flames are considered to be both reflectable and absorbable.

In Melee, the Fire Flower can be used to cause the Ice Climbers on fire glitch, which causes the partner Climber to continuously release fire effects.

Damage output[edit]

An icon for denoting incomplete things.

In Super Smash Bros. 4, damage dealt when thrown or dropped is dependent on distance. When dropped, items do more damage at greater heights as opposed to when thrown.

  • In Smash 64, level 5 and above CPUs will never use a Fire Flower against Fox or Ness, as Fox can reflect the flames and Ness can absorb them. Instead, they will always throw the Fire Flower at them.
  • The design of the Fire Flower in SSB4 and Ultimate is slightly different from its standard design; specifically, the outer red band of the flower is larger than usual. This is likely to make the item more visible from a far distance.
  • The Power Flowers from Super Mario 64 DS resemble the Fire Flower design from Melee.
