The Deku Nut (デクの実, Deku Nut) is an item from The Legend of Zelda series that appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They are throwable, even though they may look like food. Once thrown at an opponent, it will stun them for a brief moment.

The Deku Nut is a type of explosive item in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When it explodes by being thrown, attacked, or timed out, any character in its blast range (including the thrower) becomes stunned, making them vulnerable to a free hit. A character who is moving while hit will slide across the stage while stunned if they are hit by a thrown Deku Nut, but can get out of a stunned status if they managed to fall of an edge while sliding.

In SSB4, the thrower is immune to their own Deku Nut explosion, allowing for safe close-range hits.

In order for the explosion from the Deku Nut to stun the opponent, they must be on the ground. As such, If an opponent is airborne when hit by the Deku Nut, they will take a guaranteed 18% damage, and high purely vertical knockback, enough to be KO'd at 110%, as opposed to being stunned. Additionally, the initial hit from the nut itself deals knockback at the Sakurai angle, and should this knockback be high enough to raise the knockback angle above 0º, the opponent will be airborne when the explosion hits them, triggering the 90º knockback, which will likely be enough to KO them, due to the damage required for this to happen. If the Deku Nut is thrown downwards at the floor, causing only the explosion to hit the opponent, this will never occur, regardless of percent.

Deku Nuts

Items that explode in a flash of blinding light shortly after they appear or when they take damage. Those caught in a blast will be dazed and immobile for a few moments. If the item is thrown, it has the same effect on whomever it hits. In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Deku Nuts stunned enemies and were indispensable when Link was surrounded.

Deku Nut
North America After a short wait, or immediately if it gets thrown or hit, these little objects will explode in a burst of light. The flash will daze those too close, stunning them and leaving them open to attacks. It's easy to overlook these, so don't accidentally set one off on yourself!
Europe When Deku Nuts explode, they emit a light so bright that any fighter caught in the blast area - even ones with their shield up - will be stunned. If that's not enough, any foes in mid-air will be launched by the blast. Just try not to drop one by accident, or you'll definitely regret it!

Origin

A Deku Nut as it originally appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Deku Nuts first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and its direct sequel Majora's Mask. Deku Nuts take the appearance of ordinary nuts except they are filled with a special substance that can stun an individual if the nut is damaged. Deku Nuts can be found mainly around the Kokiri Forest region. Deku Babas also emit Deku Nuts when they are defeated. Link can use the Deku Nuts to stun certain enemies in the game. Impa and Sheik also use a Deku Nut, or an item similar to a Deku Nut, to conceal their departure from a certain area. The Deku Nut also appears in The Wind Waker as a throwable object instead of an item that Link can collect. In Smash Bros., the Deku Nut is used as a throwing item. If a Deku Nut hits a player, it will explode and launch the player. If the Deku Nut explodes next to a player, it will stun the player. When a Deku Nut is idle for a certain period of time or when the item is held long enough, it will explode, which is contrary to how they were in the Zelda games.
