Koopa Troopas (ノコノコ, Nokonoko) are enemies from the Mario series.
Origin[edit]
Koopa Troopas made their debut in Super Mario Bros. as a common enemy, and has become a common enemy in later Mario games. Along with the Goombas, the Koopa Troopas are some of the most recognizable enemies of the Mario series. They are anthropomorphic turtle-like creatures that are commonly seen in their green and red variations. The green Koopa Troopas are mostly known for walking in one direction until they are defeated or they fall, while the red Koopa Troopas move back and forth on platforms and turn around at ledges.
Koopa Troopas are known for damaging the player on contact. If a Koopa Troopa is jumped on, they retreat into their shells rather than be defeated altogether, which can be kicked as projectiles. If the shells are left out for too long, however, the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of its shell. The kicked shells can also pose a danger if they bounce off of a wall.
In Super Mario Bros. 3 and in later games onward, if a Koopa Troopa is jumped on and retreats into its shell, it can be picked up, carried around. This, however, can be dangerous, as the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of the shell while carried and can damage the player holding the shell. In Super Mario World and in later games onward, the Koopa Troopas appear walking on two legs instead of four.
Prominent members of the Koopa Troopa race include Kooper, one of Mario's party members in Paper Mario.
The Koopa Troopas feature a winged version: Koopa Paratroopa.

As an enemy[edit]
Introduced during E3 2001, Koopa Troopas appear as a common enemy in the Mushroom Kingdom stage of Adventure Mode.
Koopa Troopas walk back and forth, turn around at ledges, and hurt the player on contact. Dealing enough damage by attacking them or jumping on them forces them to retreat into their shells. If the shell is left alone or carried for too long, then the Koopa Troopas will emerge out of their shells. Koopa Troopas can be defeated by grabbing and throwing the Koopa Troopa inside its shell, or by knocking it off a ledge, which will result in a Koopa KO bonus where the player receives 200 points for each Koopa Troopa KO'd.
Green Koopa Troopa shells can be grabbed, carried around, and thrown like the Green Shell item to KO other enemies or damage opponents. Red Koopa Troopa shells also function similarly to the green variation, but deals fire damage and stronger damage and knockback upon contact.
Trophy[edit]
- Koopa Troopa
- Common soldiers in Bowser's army, Koopa Troopas can retreat into their shells. Unbelievable as it may seem, they're clearly unaware of being kicked and sent sliding when in this position. There are many Koopa types, each with a different shell color and unique traits. They all wear T-shirts and shorts under their shells.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
As an enemy[edit]
Koopa Troopas appear as enemies. The green and red versions appear as ground enemies in stages where Bowser's minions are present. Similar to their Melee counterparts, the Koopa Troopas can retreat into their shells when damaged or jumped on; however, they cannot harm players on contact, but they attack with a leaping headbutt when close enough. Also, the Koopa Troopas can emerge from their shells, even while their shell is moving.

Trophies[edit]
The Koopa Troopa trophies can be obtained by using the Trophy Stand on the Green and Red Koopa Troopas in The Subspace Emissary.
- Koopa Troopa (Green)
- A henchman of Bowser. In the old days, they'd retreat into their shells for a short while to protect themselves after being stepped on. Recently, however, some have begun to immediately pop back out. You'll often find them marching straight ahead--if the path ends, they'll just march into the abyss. Surely there are no braver turtles to be found.

- : Super Mario World
- Koopa Troopa (Red)
- A turtle in the employ of Bowser. Koopas formerly traveled on four legs, but they've recently been spotted strolling on two. This has freed up their hands, allowing them to chase Mario with nets.[tr 1] Their adaptability must make Bowser very happy indeed. Unlike their green-shelled brethren, red ones do about-faces when they run out of road. They're a bright group.

- ^ The text "chase Mario with nets" is a mistranslation from the Japanese trophy description, which states that they chased Mario by climbing on wire nets, which occurred in castles and fortresses in Super Mario World.

As an enemy[edit]
The Koopa Troopas appear as enemies in Smash Run in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, reprising their behavior from Brawl.
As a background character[edit]
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Koopa Troopas appear as background characters in the Super Mario Maker stage riding a Lakitu cloud. Their appearance changes depending on the game style, matching their designs in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U.
Trophies[edit]
The Red Koopa Troopa trophy is exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. The Green Koopa Troopa trophy appears in both versions. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, it is part of the Bowser's Minions Trophy Box.
- Koopa Troopa (Red)
- Bowser's go-to foot soldiers. They sport red shells and advance forward, but they have the common sense not to walk off cliffs. During Smash Run, they'll advance toward any fighter they see, attacking with their whole body. These Koopas leave red shells when beaten.
- These Koopas are a lot like their green counterparts, except their shells are red, and they have the sense not to blindly walk off cliffs or into holes. If one spots you in Smash Run, it'll attack with its whole body, so watch out! Defeat it to turn it into a shell you can throw at other enemies.
- Koopa Troopa (Green)
- Koopa Troopas are the main representatives of Bowser's army. They are just about as common as Goombas. They know no fear, bravely charging ahead even if it means falling off a cliff or into a hole. They do this in Smash Run as well. Defeating them will reduce them to a shell you can throw.
- These turtles are just as common as Goombas in Bowser's army. They may look meek, but they have the guts to leap off any cliff they come across. If you jump on one, its shell will be yours to kick or throw as you please. Many locations in Mario games are named after these enemies, such as Koopa Beach and Koopa Park.

- : Super Mario Kart (09/1992)
- These turtles are just as common as Goombas in Bowser's army. They're brave little soldiers, and nothing will make them stop in their tracks – not you, not holes, not even cliffs. The same goes in Smash Run, too. Once they see a fighter, they'll go right after them. Beat them or stomp on them to turn them into shells you can throw.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
As a background character[edit]
The Koopa Troopas in their 8-bit forms return as background characters in the returning Mushroom Kingdom stage. They have been updated to more accurately match their original sprites from Super Mario Bros. and are now wearing red shells.
Koopa Troopas also return as background characters in the returning Super Mario Maker stage.
Spirit[edit]
Koopa Troopa also appears as a Novice-class support spirit, and is featured on the Standard Kart spirit.
In both spirits' battles, Koopa Troopa uses a Squirtle puppet fighter and features Green Shells as an item.
Koopa Troopa is fought on the Golden Plains stage, referencing their appearance in New Super Mario Bros. 2. During the battle, Squirtle's defense will increase, referencing how a Koopa Troopa retreats into its shell rather than be destroyed by getting hit by a jump attack.
During the Standard Kart spirit battle, Koopa Troopa uses an army of four Squirtles, referencing the Koopa Troopa and the Triple Green Shells depicted in the spirit artwork, and is fought on the Mario Circuit stage. During the battle, the Squirtle army will favor their Withdraw special, referencing how the Green Shells are used as an item in the Mario Kart series.
