The Poison Mushroom is slightly darker and sports a more menacing face than the Super Mushroom. The Poison Mushroom shrinks the character that touches it.
- Lasts about 10 seconds.
- Attacks deal less damage and knockback.
- Hitboxes are much smaller.
- The character becomes lighter, which increases knockback. (5/8 as heavy)
- Thrown items do not go as far and deal less damage.
- The character's sound effects and voice become higher pitched.
Players should learn to identify the slight differences in the two mushrooms. This becomes harder as the action is zoomed out.
Origin
Poison Mushrooms appear in the Japanese Version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (called Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in the American version of the game Super Mario All-Stars). Looking very similar to the Super Mushroom, it acted as a Reverse Mushroom, shrinking Mario if he was big and killing him if he was small. When the game was remade in Super Mario All-Stars, the mushroom was given a much more obvious Purple design with a skull mark on it.
Trophy Info
A penalty item that shrinks whoever grabs it. It's hard to distinguish from a Super Mushroom, so you may find yourself getting small when you wanted to get big. When you're in miniature form, your attack power drops, and even the lightest attack can send you off the stage. That being said, a small target's hard to hit. Your best plan when you're tiny may be to run.

Trivia
- In Brawl, if Pikachu uses his Up-special (Quick Attack) on a falling Poison Mushroom, he will shoot up out of sight at the top of the screen and not come down for about 5-10 seconds.
- When R.O.B. is in Poison Mushroom form, his down air can make him stay in the air and slightly recover higher every time he performs his down air, making it good for camping.
- In Brawl, it is slightly easier to differentiate between a Poison Mushroom and a Super Mushroom, especially if you pause the match and use the camera.
