Gaur Plain (ガウル平原, Gaur Plain) is a stage in both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4 based on an area from Xenoblade Chronicles.
Stage layout
There are two main rock platforms high up on each side of the stage with walk-off edges, and a giant chasm between them. A collection of smaller platforms appear below the main platforms. The center of the stage is mostly empty, with a short gap between the top platforms and a wider gap between the lower platforms. The background also shifts through a day/night cycle.
The Super Smash Bros. for Wii U version of the stage features a slightly different arrangement of the platform on the left and some more platforms, including two near the bottom which feature springs that characters can use to bounce up to the top platforms. Metal Face also appears at night, attacking the players with his claws and laser beams. His laser beam attack can target any of the two upper platforms, making them fall and destroying the platforms underneath. The original layout is automatically restored some time after he is defeated. If attacked enough, Metal Face can be defeated, causing him to explode: the explosion harms all characters in its range except for the one who landed the finishing hit. However, when he may return when night falls again.
Ω Form
The Omega version features a pillar at the bottom, which is solid in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U version but just part of the background in the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS version. The day/night cycle still happens.
Origin
In Xenoblade Chronicles, Gaur Plain is a location within the greater Bionis' Leg area. It is a lush, large plain featuring bodies of water and several peculiarly shaped rock formations. Shulk and his friend Reyn traverse it in their path to the Bionis' Head. In Xenoblade Chronicles, the plain is much closer to the Bionis' knee than in SSB4.
The gigantic figure seen in the distance is the Mechonis, the other of the two gigantic beings which make up the world in Xenoblade Chronicles. It is visible from Gaur Plain in the original game, but due to the aforementioned position change, in this stage it appears to be farther away.
