Marth (マルス, Marusu) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was announced on the official website on November 7th, 2013. Years before, four Fire Emblem games were released on November 3, November 4, and November 11. Visually, Marth's appearance has been updated based on his attire from the DS game, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, but with some elements from Mystery of the Emblem and its remake, as well.
He has been nerfed between Brawl and Smash 4, having fewer good finishing options and slower moves.
Changes from Brawl
Marth was slightly nerfed from Brawl to SSB4. Some of his attacks have been sped up, but he now has a harder time landing moves due to his shorter sword and lessened follow-up options out of grabs.
- Shield Breaker deals more shield damage and is a slightly more effective KO move when uncharged. It also now gives Marth a horizontal boost when used in the air, regardless of whether it's charged or not[1], aiding Marth's recovery.
- Counter appears to have strengthened, being able to KO reliably off of strong countered attacks at very low percentages.
- Critical Hit deals more damage, dealing 64% instead of 60%.
- Back aerial is faster.
- Marth's sword is now shorter than it was in Brawl.
- Forward air deals less damage and appears to have greater landing lag.
- A number of Marth's moves (e.g. dash attack, down tilt, neutral aerial, back aerial, up tilt, forward smash) deal slightly less damage than in Brawl.
- Dancing Blade is slower.
- All throws have stronger knockback, which lessens Marth's follow-up options after a grab.
- Down throw sends foes at an upwards trajectory, however, which gives him some new follow-up options at lower percents.
- Dolphin Slash's hitboxes, especially the sweetspot, are weaker.
- Down aerial no longer meteor smashes unless the tipper hits in the middle (vertex) of the swing arc, making it even harder to connect the meteor smash. The hitboxes that used to tipper now send foes sideways with moderate knockback.
- Marth's attack trails are much brighter at the tip, making the sweetspot of his attacks more visible than in previous games.
The following attacks are visually unchanged:
- First hit of jab
- Up smash
- Down smash
- The first hit of Dancing Blade
- Dolphin Slash
- Side taunt
- Down taunt
