The Super Leaf (スーパーこのは, Sūpākonoha) is an item from the Mario universe that appears in Super Smash Bros. 4. It gives the player raccoon ears and a tail, allowing them to float for about 3 seconds by holding the jump button in a similar manner to Peach's ability; unlike hers, though, the player will still slowly descend. If released before it's time runs out, you can re-activate it at any time by re-holding the jump button. While floating, a character can still perform all of their attacks as normal. It can not be used while in a helpless state, such as after many character's up-special move.

If Peach uses it, then her own float ability will activate first. As soon as she releases it, or it's time runs out, then the Super Leaf's effect will become active.

Origin

Super Leaves first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 as a power-up item and has returned in Super Mario 3D Land and numerous games since. It gave Mario and Luigi the ability to transform into Raccoon Mario and Raccoon Luigi respectively (Tanooki Mario and Kitsune Luigi in Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World), which gave them the ability to fly by waving their tail. It also allowed the player to slow descent, also by waving the tail, and to attack enemies by swinging their tail. The design of the leaf itself is based around their recent reappearance in Mario games. Its functions in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are similar; it has been confirmed to transform the player to have raccoon ears and a tail like Raccoon Mario, and allows them to float, like in the Mario series.

Trivia

  • At one point in time, it had been considered to allow characters to attack with their tail, another feature this powerup gives in the Mario games, though it was decided against once the game had come out.
