The POW Block (POWブロック, POWburokku) is a hazard in Super Smash Bros.'s Mushroom Kingdom stage and Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Mario Bros. stage. It is an item in Super Smash Bros. 4.
In Super Smash Bros.
POW Blocks, based on their Super Mario Bros. 2 use, appear at intervals in certain locations on the Mushroom Kingdom stage. When attacked, it shakes the screen and deals 20% damage and considerable upwards knockback to every character currently touching the ground or a platform, often KO'ing characters over 100%.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The POW Block returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the stage Mario Bros., based on its use in the game of the same name. This time around, the block deals no damage, but causes grounded characters to bounce upwards (which interrupts charging smash attacks and the like) when struck.
It also lands a hit on every grounded enemy on the stage, and disappears in three hits (returning after a while).
In Super Smash Bros. 4
The POW Block has been confirmed as an item in Super Smash Bros. 4. It can be picked up and thrown, dealing 10 damage and causing strong knockback (KO'ing at about 120% damage) to opponents on the ground when it lands. It can be used 3 times, shrinking after each use, similar to in the original Mario Bros. If it is dropped, it will be tossed forward instead, but not activate; instead, it will just come to a rest. If it hits an opponent when drop-thrown, it will deal 13 damage and knockback equal to when it is activated.
Origin
The POW Block originates from Mario Bros., where it was used to strike all enemies on the ground in the stage at once. The POW Block can only be hit three times before it disappears. Each time it is hit, it gets shorter and shorter. In Mario Bros., the POW Block was set in a fixed location; however, it later reappeared in Super Mario Bros. 2 as an item that can be picked up and thrown, which would kill all the enemies on the screen. They also reappeared in New Super Mario Bros. Wii with the same function as in Super Mario Bros. 2. In both games the POW Block can only be used once, unlike in Mario Bros. Also, the POW Blocks in Super Mario Bros. 2 were red, but in New Super Mario Bros. Wii they returned to their original blue color. In Super Smash Bros. 4, POW Blocks function similarly to both their first appearance in Mario Bros., as it can be used up to three times and gets shorter each time, and the ability to pick it up as in Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The design of the POW Block is similar to their appearance in contemporary 3D Mario games with blue POW Blocks.
