Bowser (SSB4)

Bowser (クッパ, Kuppa) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was confirmed in the reveal trailer at E3. In Smash 4, Bowser appears to have a more cartoonish appearance that is more inline with his look in the Mario games, rather than the more realistic look he had in Brawl. He has additionally been shown to have several changes in his moveset and his general animations.

Confirmed information

Out of all of the returning characters seen so far, Bowser appears to have changed the most:

  • Bowser stands upright as opposed to his hunched-over posture from previous games.
  • Bowser has a new dashing animation where he runs upright instead of scuttling along the ground.
  • Bowser appears to now have launch resistance outside his Giga Bowser transformation, with him being seen in Little Mac's reveal trailer unflinching from Mega Man's normal Mega Buster shots, and Sakurai implying some sort of armor in this Miiverse post. The extent of this new launch resistance, and which moves it applies to, is currently unknown.
  • The following attacks are visually unchanged:
  • Bowser appears to have several new attacks:
    • A powerful two-footed dropkick; appears to be a new forward smash.
    • A dashing side kick; appears to be a new dash attack.
    • An aerial attack where Bowser spins with his arms outstretched; appears to be a new neutral aerial.
    • An aerial two-footed kick backwards, similar in appearance to Kirby's back aerial (and thus appears to be Bowser's new back aerial).
    • An altered back throw, where Bowser uses one arm in a sideways motion to throw the opponent behind, similar looking to Donkey Kong's back throw.
  • His down tilt has the same animation, but seems to be a pair of punches instead of claw slashes.
  • Bowser now spins when performing his up smash.
  • Down aerial seems to be functionally altered; it now appears to be a quick stall-then-fall, that hits an opponent once with powerful knockback, though it's unclear if it meteor smashes or hits all opponents vertically.
  • Aerial Whirling Fortress appears to gain significantly more vertical height.
  • Bowser Bomb appears to have a larger hitbox.
