Kagaribi 12 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Tokorozawa, Saitama, Kantō from May 5th-6th, 2024, as the last and largest of three major/supermajor events of the 2024 Golden Week. At 2,030 entrants for singles, it was also the largest Smash event in Japan, the ninth-largest Smash event of all-time, and the first Smash tournament outside of the United States to surpass 2,000 entrants.

Not only is Kagaribi 12 one of the largest Smash Ultimate event of all time, it's also one of the most stacked. For Japanese players, only 7 of the top 50 best players in Japan in 2023 didn't attend (those being ProtoBanham, Jagaimo, Atelier, HIKARU, Sigma, Senra and showers). Kagaribi 12 also features some of the best players from NA (MkLeo, Zomba, MkBigBoss, Maister, Big D, etc...), including the current best player in NA, Sparg0, as well as Glutonny for Europe and Kinaji for Oceania.
In early bracket, a lot of upsets already happened. The only international player of these upsets is #26 Big D, as he was double-eliminated by #997 Ubuge (UF 10, the largest of the tournament) for 257th, the lowest international placement of the tournament. Additionally, several top japanese players were sent to loser's very early. #83 Ezs lost 0-2 to commentator, Jigglypuff main and #942 Sean from School (upset factor 7), #46 Omuatsu lost 1-2 to Steve main and #302 Az (upset factor 6), #37 Eim lost 0-2 to #220 and Lucas main DenKOTA (UF5) and #30 Lv.1 lost 1-2 to Luigi main and #227 No.8 (upset factor 6). Only Lv.1 did a long 7 sets loser's run (and manage to get to a 25th place finish, matching his seed), as Ezs finished 193rd (losing to Omuatsu), Omuatsu at 129th (losing to Pac-Man main and #135 Yoshiko for a upset factor 4) and Eim at 97th (losing to #80 Nizemamo).
In top 256, no international players were upset, but #25 Umeki lost 3-0 to #104 Navy 0-3(UF 4) and #89 Eik 1-3 (UF 3) for 97th, his worst placement at a Smash event, while #24 DIO lost 0-3 to #105 Leaf and #88 Kinaji 2-3 for 97th, his second worst placement at a Smash event. Likewise, #57 Huto lost to #72 Chicken and Lucario Main and #276 Haruka (UF 5) and #42 Uame lost to #87 ElleGo and #131 Nano (UF 4), both finishing at 129th.
In top 128, the two first top 8 seeds upsets occurs, as #68 Lax beat #4 Zomba 3-2 for a upset factor 9, the second biggest of the tournament. The other top 8 seed to be upset is #8 Yoshidora, who lost 0-3 to #72 Chicken (UF 7). After upsetting Uame, Nano also eliminate #22 Jogibu at 65th (upset factor 6). In top 64, Yoshidora was eliminated at 49th after losing 1-3 to #92 Kuroponzu (UF 7), his worst placement since Kagaribi 6 in January 2022. #7 Shuton was also upset by #26 TamaPDaifuku (UF 4). Lastly, Sparg0, who had won the previous Kagaribi he attended, was eliminated at 33rd by #31 Toriguri 2-3 (UF 8) and #44 Noi 2-3 (UF 9), his worst result since Super Smash Con 2023 in August 2023. As such, before top 64, only half of the top 8 seeds were not in loser's bracket or eliminated.
After top 64, upsets decreased in numbers, but all remaining international players were eliminated. #14 MkLeo lost in winners to #19 Snow (which include two reverse 3-stock by Snow) 1-3 and in losers to #41 Yamanaction (UF 3) 1-3, eliminated at 25th. Zomba was eliminated in Shuton loser's run 2-3 for 25th and #10 Maister, placing 13th, is the highest placed North American player of the tournament, being beaten by TamaPDaifuku 2-3 (UF 3) and #17 Doramigi 2-3. 4 other international players matched or outplaced their seed. #33 MkBigBoss lost to Acola and Lv.1 for 33rd, #35 BassMage lost to Miya and Yamanaction for 33rd, all in 1-3, #62 Goblin lost to Miya 1-3 and Chicken 0-3 for 25th and #50 Jahzz0 lost to Raru 0-3 and Kaninabe 2-3 for 25th. Lastly, #6 Glutonny was eliminated at 9th as the highest placing international player, being send to losers by #11 Asimo 3-0 and losing the loser's top 8 qualifier to #9 KEN 2-3.
Outside of KEN, the other players to enter top 8 through loser's side are Shuton (after a long loser's run defeating Gackt, Zomba, Navy, Yaura and Asimo), #12 Tea (beating sssr, Kaninabe, Akakikusu and Raru) and #13 Zackray (beating Shirayuki, M0tsunabE Akakikusu and Doramigi). On the other side, #1 Acola reached winner's semi-finals rather easily (but going game 5 against Pit main Midorun and Yaura), similar to #3 Miya, #5 Hurt and TamaPDaifuku, having all dropped only 3 games. As such, only half of the top 8 seeds made into the top 8.
Despite not entering top 8, both Akakikusu, Doramigi and Carmelo greatly outplaced their seed. #17 Doramigi finished 9th, beating not only Maister but also Taikei, Neo, Lv.1 and Toriguri, while #29 Akakikusu beat Rizeasu, Lax and Yamanaction en route to a 13th place finish. Lastly, #49 Carmelo placed 17th with wins over Nizemamo, Taikei, alice and Takera.
In top 8, both winners semi-finals (Acola vs Hurt and Miya and TamaPDaifuku) went to game 5, but Miya and Hurt came victorious, with Hurt's victory being a upset factor 4. Hurt became the first player not named Miya to defeat Acola since Sonix and Sparg0 at Watch the Throne in December 2023. In loser's, KEN was swiftly 3-0'd by Zackray's Pit, whereas Tea and Shuton went to game 5, with Tea finally winning. Dropping to the loser's, Acola defeats Tea 3-1, Zackray 3-0 (who had ended TamaP's run at 5th) before losing the runback against Hurt in loser's finals. In Grand Finals, Miya manage to reverse 3-0 Hurt, especially in game 3 where Miya combo'ed a 6 Judge into a 9, killing Hurt at only 11%, winning his second P Tier in 2024 after Kowloon with Sumabato. Not international players in top 8 and especially Zomba et Sparg0 underperformances at Kagaribi 12 further proved Japan's dominance over the NA playerbase. Several top NA players, such as Dabuz, discuss after the tournament the reason of the fall of the NA scene compared to Japan.
