Roy (ロイ, Roy) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, officially confirmed on June 12th, 2018. Jun Fukuyama's portrayal of Roy from Smash 4 was recycled for the Japanese release of Ultimate. In international versions, Roy is now voiced by Ray Chase, who reprises his role from Fire Emblem Heroes.[1]
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Roy's model features a more subdued color scheme.
- Roy has a new crouching animation.
- Some of Roy's moves, such as his down aerial, have fire effects added to them.
- Roy's sweetspotted moves now use the sound effects from Ike's sword, Ragnell.
- All of Roy's victory animations have been slightly altered with added flair.
- As with Marth, Roy is re-voiced in English outside of Japan.
Attributes
- Roy benefits significantly from Ultimate's mechanics, as the general faster pace of the game and reduction in lag allow him to play more aggressively and makes him more mobile.
- Like all characters, Roy’s jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
- As a result of initial dashes being standardized, Roy's initial dash is significantly faster, improving his already excellent ground mobility.
- Roy's hilt sweetspots have been increased in size.
- Roy's air acceleration has been increased.
- Roy's double jump covers less distance.
Ground Attacks
- Dash attack has less ending lag.
- Forward smash now hits overhead. It also has slightly less startup.
Aerial Attacks
- All aerials have less landing lag.
- Forward aerial's autocancel window has been restored, allowing it to autocancel within a short hop.
- Up aerial is stronger.
- Down aerial now deals flame damage and ignites the Sword of Seals during the move.
Throws/other attacks
- Roy's forward throw is now an elbow strike to the chest, just like Marth's.
Special Moves
- Flare Blade has slightly less startup, and like with most non-storeable charge moves, Roy can now turn the move to the opposite direction while charging.
- As with Marth and Lucina's Dancing Blade, Double-Edge Dance transitions significantly faster into each hit. It can also now be buffered and is much harder to escape from.
- Double-Edge Dance also has more knockback on the 4th hit.
- Roy now removes the Sword of Seals from its sheath once he has finished sheathing it in Critical Hit.
- Critical Hit now causes a flaming background to appear once the main hit is unleashed.
Role in World of Light
Roy was absent in the World of Light trailer, though he presumably became a spirit alongside the rest of the galaxy (sans Kirby) when Galeem unleashed its beams of light.
