Ganondorf was granted some of the most notable changes from the transition from Smash 4 to Ultimate, with a boost in power and attack speed, and a reduction in landing lag. Many of his moves have altered animations and his smash attacks now involves him wielding his sword from the Space World 2000 tech demo, both of which further separate him from Captain Falcon.

Aesthetics

  • Change Ganondorf's appearance has reverted to his original design from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, albeit with a complete graphical overhaul to his appearance, bearing closer resemblance to his original concept art from Ocarina of Time.
  • Change Ganondorf's initial dash and running animations were altered, with his arms placed more out to the side rather than next to him.
  • Change Ganondorf's on-screen appearance now shows him stepping out of a liquid-like vortex of darkness.
  • Change All of Ganondorf's darkness-type moves have become significantly flashier, causing large purple explosions on hit.
  • Change Ganondorf has new victory animations. The first has him flip his cape before pumping a fist. The second has him levitate in the air, land on the ground while punching his right hand into his palm, then reeling back his fist before thrusting his hand towards the screen. He retains his victory pose where he laughs wickedly, but now flips his cape prior to laughing. [1]

Attributes

  • Buff The universal 3-frame jumpsquat significantly improves Ganondorf's ground-to-air mobility, down from 7 frames.
  • Buff Ganondorf jumps higher.
  • Buff Ganondorf can dash cancel into his forward tilt and down tilt, letting him to use his fast options alongside dash attack on the ground, allowing for potential mixups. This also helps Ganondorf mitigate forward tilt's range, and lets him have a potent semi-spike while approaching.
  • Buff Ganondorf’s air speed is slightly faster.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Neutral attack no longer has a sourspot.
  • Buff Up tilt has significantly faster startup and less ending lag, now being faster than Warlock Punch for the first time. It also deals slightly more damage and knockback.
  • Change Up tilt now has a flame effect on Ganondorf's foot during the startup, and no longer has him holding up his leg, similar to its animation in Melee.
  • Buff All of Ganondorf's new smash attacks involve his sword from the Space World 2000 tech demo. This grants them both extra range and disjointed hitboxes.
    • Change Aesthetically, his up smash and forward smash both resemble Ike's attacks, while his down smash resembles Cloud's.
  • Buff Ganondorf has a new forward smash, a downward sword slash, similar to Ike's forward smash. Compared to the previous forward smash, it has significantly improved range, and covers overhead. It also deals more damage when fully charged.
  • Nerf Forward smash has more startup, more ending lag, and fewer active frames.
  • Buff Ganondorf has a new up smash, an overhead sword swing, similar to Ike's up smash. Compared to the previous up smash, it has less startup, more active frames, significantly improved range, and covers around his body.
  • Nerf Up smash has more ending lag.
  • Buff Ganondorf has a new down smash, a low sword hilt thrust forward into a stab behind him, similar to Cloud's down smash. Compared to the previous down smash, it has less ending lag, sends opponents at a semi-spike angle, has a much lower hitbox placement allowing it to hit low crouching opponents, and lowers Ganondorf's hurtbox. The hitbox on the first hit that sent opponents forward and away from the second hit was removed. Additionally, the move does more damage when fully charged.

Aerial attacks

  • Buff All aerials have significantly lower landing lag.
  • Buff Forward aerial has Ganondorf leaning more forward like he did in Melee, improving its reach.
  • Bug fix Forward aerial's auto-cancel window was restored.
  • Nerf Up aerial has more start-up and no longer hits below, significantly weakening its gimping potential while completely removing its jab reset combos.
  • Change Up aerial is now a right legged kick instead of his left.
  • Change Down aerial has Ganondorf lean back slightly as he stomps, similar to its animation in Melee, which in turn was originally derived from Captain Falcon.

Throws/other attacks

  • Buff Grab range improved.
  • Buff Grab is faster.
  • Change Ganondorf now grabs with his left hand instead of his right, and has an altered dash grab animation.
  • Change Pummel deals less damage but is faster.
  • Change Ganondorf's forward throw is now an uppercut.
  • Buff Forward throw deals more damage.
  • Buff Ganondorf's up throw deals more damage.

Special Moves

  • Buff Warlock Punch deals more damage and is stronger.
  • Buff Grounded Flame Choke has less ending lag, improving its combo capabilities. Ganondorf also no longer dashes over the edge when using it on the ground.
  • Nerf Opponents can now escape aerial Flame Choke via button mashing, significantly hindering Ganoncide's utility.
  • Buff Dark Dive has higher knockback, launches opponents at a lower angle, and has lower ending lag. In addition, opponents released by trading attacks now receive damage.
  • Bug fix Landing lag glitch on Flame Choke and Dark Dive was fixed.
  • Buff Grounded Wizard's Foot travels faster and has significantly lower ending lag. In addition, the sourspot was moved from the foot to the leg, making it easier to hit the sweetspot.
  • Change Wizard's Foot now resembles its Falcon Kick-like Melee appearance.
  • Change Beast Ganon's appearance is now that of his Ocarina of Time incarnation. Instead of slamming the ground, Beast Ganon slashes with his swords before rushing forward.

Trivia

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks the first time in the series that Ganondorf utilizes a sword in his base moveset.
    • Super Smash Bros. 4 allows him to utilize his sword, albeit as a custom move.
  • One of Ganondorf's updated clips, specifically relegated to his down smash, features him shouting "Oooh-yah!", which was a clip that notably went unused in Melee. It also made an appearance in Brawl as Ganondorf's Wii Remote selection sound.
