Article on Lylat Wiki Venom

Venom (惑星ベノム, Planet Venom) is a starter stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In All-Star Mode, this is where Falco and his teammates are fought.

Stage overviewEdit

The battle takes place on the Great Fox. Unlike the Corneria stage, the battle is fought on the front view of the ship, in contrast to the side view. Characters can fight on any of the ship's four wings, and also on the tailpiece in the center of the stage to an extent. This tailpiece is also a hazard that makes it difficult to travel to the other side. The top two wings of the ship slope inwards while the bottom two wings slope outwards. Items tend to roll off of the two bottom wings of the ship.

Similar to Corneria in Super Smash Bros. Melee, every now and then, an Arwing or Wolfen will appear and start firing at the ship then will fly off. Any character that gets hit by the shots will take damage. Also, when the ship flies into the cave, sometimes characters will bounce back onto the stage when smacked upwards or towards the sides due to the top, left, and right blast lines being obstructed by the cave itself, which might save one from getting KO'd.

As with Corneria, Fox and Falco can perform a Smash Taunt on this stage, with the messages that appear being the same ones that are used on Corneria.

Ω form and Battlefield formEdit

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form and Battlefield form are set on a slightly redesigned version of Corneria's Ω form from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS; however, it is resized and reshaped to match Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. The three soft platforms of the Battlefield form are metallic and are unique to this form. Arwing and Wolfen do not interact with the stages.

No HazardsEdit

With stage hazards turned off, the Arwings and Wolfens do not appear. However, the stage still tilts.

OriginEdit

Venom as seen in Star Fox 64.

The planet Venom first appeared in Star Fox (Starwing in the PAL region) and has appeared in numerous Star Fox titles since; however, this stage is based on its appearance as the last level of Star Fox 64 (Lylat Wars in the PAL region), and is where the final boss, Andross, is fought. In the Star Fox games, Venom is a barren, desolate planet full of steep cliffs and deep chasms of rock that the Star Fox team must maneuver through to reach Andross, who was exiled to the deadly planet due to his crimes against Corneria. However, unlike as seen in this stage, Venom was not shown to have volcanic activity, except on a Battle mode stage in Star Fox 64 3D, which was released almost a decade after the debut of this stage.

In Star Fox 64, Star Fox encountered various dangers on Venom, such as holes in the cliffsides and in the ground where enemy aircraft emerged to attack, giant, jagged rocks that emerged from the ground as soon as they got close, and a barrage of stone pillars that appeared to block their path. In the background of this stage, references to these obstacles can be seen.

The Great Fox, Star Fox's mobile headquarters, acts as the main platform of the stage; however, at no point in Star Fox 64 does the Great Fox fly over Venom's surface. Also in this stage are Arwings and Wolfens, flown by Star Fox and Star Wolf, respectively, that occasionally appear to act as small platforms. All three aircraft are based on their appearances in Star Fox 64, and the Arwings apparently have one Laser Upgrade, as they fire two lasers at once as opposed to the standard one.

In Melee and Ultimate, the Great Fox is based on its appearance in Star Fox 64. Unlike its sister stage, Corneria, which was redesigned to its appearance in Star Fox Zero, the Venom planet is still based on Star Fox 64.

Tournament legalityEdit

Venom is banned in tournaments, primarily due to the fin in the center of the stage, which can easily cause infinite combos; the bottom wings also promote camping, and the blastlines are considered to be too close to the stage.

TriviaEdit

  • In Ultimate, Venom and Corneria share the same main platform and soft platforms for their Ω form and Battlefield form.
  • In Ultimate, clipping the camera through the Great Fox reveals a black cube in the center, which is used to rotate the Arwings/Wolfens appearing on the stage.
  • Interestingly, Venom's section on the Tips page does does not mention any information about Smash Taunts despite doing so for Corneria.
    • Additionally, the tip regarding Arwings does not mention Wolfens despite them being featured.
  • In Ultimate, Nikki cannot appear on this stage as an Assist Trophy due to the dark background obscuring her drawings, and neither can Yuri Kozukata for unknown reasons. Burrowing Snagret, Kapp'n and Knuckles can only appear on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage. Additionally, Marshadow can only be summoned on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms.
