Item class Throwing/Trap

The Bumper (バンパー banpā) is an item in two games of the Super Smash Bros. series. When a player touches an activated bumper, they get bounced with much force in the direction away from the bumper, and receive 1% of damage (SSB only). When smash thrown, it gives very powerful knockback, almost always resulting in a KO.

In the original Super Smash Bros., the bumper would recoil a distance when touched. After being thrown, it'll only stick to the ground. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however, it remains stationary from when activated until it disappears. After being thrown, it will only move for a second before placing itself, similar to the Flipper, which replaced it in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

This item is based on the bumpers used in a typical pinball machine.

Description from the Super Smash Bros. Instruction Booklet

Hit an opponent with this item for a little pinball action - but be careful, because the bumper just might bump you!

Trophy

The Bumper item appears as a trophy in Brawl. It is received by hitting a total of 5,000 metres or 15,000 feet with all fighters Home-Run Contest records.

Bumper
An item that originally appeared in Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. After many years, it now makes its triumphant return. Bumpers are used in pinball to send balls flying, and they perform the same role in Smash Bros. They react to anything that touches them, including the people who set them. As they can also be set in midair, using them requires good tactics.

Trivia

  • Set Bumpers can be reflected in SSB. As a result, if the platform is small enough (such as the top of the right structure on Hyrule Castle or the pipes of Mushroom Kingdom), Fox can reflect a Bumper repeatedly until his Reflector breaks, at which point the super-reflected Bumper will deal extreme damage (but still set knockback). (example video)
  • Despite not being an item on Melee, being replaced by the Flipper, the Bumper makes an appearance in Collect the Trophies in Classic Mode, being two giant parts to each side of the stage.
  • When thrown on a platform that disappears or shrinks, the platform will bounce if the platform does either.
  • In Brawl, when a Bumper is placed in midair, it can be picked up while rotating into place before it is fully set. With luck, a player can attack an opponent with a bumper and grab it again. (example video)
