Luigi (ルイージ, Luigi) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was revealed along with the rest of the roster on June 12th, 2018.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Luigi's model features a more subdued color scheme. His hair and clothing now features simple detailing, similar to Brawl.
  •   Like most of the returning roster, Luigi has become much more expressive than in the previous games.
    •   His eyes during the last pose of his up taunt are now shut, displaying terror rather than surprise.
  •   Luigi has a new dashing animation akin to how he runs in Luigi's Mansion.
  •   Luigi's attacks that involve fire, such as his Fireball, have been given brighter, flashier particle effects.
  •   Luigi's "Waluigi" costume now has a green L instead of the purple L in SSB4, which in turn replaced the original yellow L in Brawl.
  •   Luigi's head is slightly repositioned when using his neutral aerial.

Attributes

  •   Like all characters, Luigi's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground Attacks

  •   Forward tilt has an altered animation, now looking similar to Mario's forward tilt, except mirrored.
  •   Luigi has a new up tilt, a short uppercut.

Special Moves

  •   Luigi's charging animation for Green Missile has been changed. He also now spins when Green Missile misfires.
  •   Like several other powerful attacks in the game, Luigi's Super Jump Punch sweetspot displays a dramatic slow motion effect when it successfully hits an opponent.
  •   Super Jump Punch has significantly decreased landing lag.
  •   Super Jump Punch travels higher.
  •   Luigi Cyclone now has a vortex form around Luigi when used.

Trivia

  • Luigi's official artwork uses the "hip thrust" pose from his neutral attack's third hit, which returns from Super Smash Bros. 4.
  • In Simon's reveal trailer, Luigi was shown having his soul taken by Death, which led to humorous posts from the community claiming that Luigi had been officially "killed off". In turn, BBC News wrote a mock obituary for Luigi. Nintendo UK eventually responded with a short message of "Luigi is okay" as a nod to this event.
    • Because of this event, Luigi was not shown from the rest of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct of August 8th, 2018. Despite this, Mario and Mega Man were present in this Direct, even after what happened in Ridley's reveal trailer.
    • Luigi's presence in the aforementioned trailer despite otherwise having no connection to the Castlevania franchise was most likely a reference to the Luigi's Mansion subset of games, which dealt with a similar plot premise to the Castlevania franchise. This is supported by Luigi possessing the Poltergust 5000 in the trailer as well as his attempting to no avail to ward off the Mummies with the strobe flashlight.
  • Luigi's pose in the panoramic artwork for Ultimate is reminiscent of his pose in a group artwork for Melee.
